City Printer—Official Paper
URKEST CITY (I RCILATION.
FRIDAY MORNING Doe. 28, ISM
SCISSORS.
—What motives have railroad trains
for running? Locomotives.
—N. I’. Hanks once played Claude
Melnotte in Boston.
—An English market-gardener was
shot dead by a cat that leaped against a
gun-barrel.
—The first Thanksgiving kept in
America was observed in the Plymouth
Colony, December 11, (O. S.) 1611.
—Our city is usually quiet. The
devil is not among us. He is busy at
Washington.
Give strict attention to your own
I “ffairs—and consider your wife one of
them.
—We hope that prices will tumble
(oon, nnd be so badly hurt that they
cau never get up again.
—An Irishman warns the people not
to trust his wite, becasc he was never
married to her.
—An Irishman warns the people not
to trust his wife, because he was never
married to her.
—The Boston Post savs “Mexico
is the American Sphinx.” No doubt ;
but we “riddled” it with bullets in
1846.
—The following question is now be
fore the Sand Lake Debating Society :
“ Which do women love the best—to "be
hugged in a polka, or squeezed in a
sleigh ? ”
—Hon. Charles Ready, a former M.
C., has been Mayor of Murfreesboro'
His daughter was not always Ready,
but was the wife of Gen. John Morgan.
—Astbv's shaft, a coal mine at Dun
kenfield, Cheshire, England, is 3,959
feet deep, more than two thirds of a
mile.
—There are 370 churches in Moscow,
and all the bells rung at one time on
the occasion of the royal marriage. The
clanging was fearful.
Mrs Sarah Malin, who has died in
Philadelphia at eighty-seven, was one of
the girls who cast flowers before Wash
ington on his entry into Trenton.
—A Danville paper nominates Gen.
Lee for Governor of Virginia. This is
said to be the only political position he
ever aspired to.
—At what age do pigs end their
existence ? Answer—Saus-age.—Ex
change.
Or when they are B. —Louisville Dem
ocrat.
—A detroit artist is painting a pic
ture of Lake Superior—in water colors,
probably. —Boston Post.
Doubtless, and ultra marine at that.
At all events, it will be a Superior pic
ture.— Milwaukie Sentinel.
—There is occasionally a Southern
paper which is ns good as an emetic to
read.— Chicago Post.
That’s the case with all of them when
they republish much from the Chicago
Post.—Mobile Register,
—The people are not as popular with
us as they used to be. —Louisville Dem
ocrat.
And that is no doubt the reason so
many of the people have here lately
taken to cutting their throats. —Mobile
Register.
—Those who wish to understand the
meaning of the old saying, “There is no
fool like an old fool,” may be enlight
ened by reading the letters of “A Vete
ran Observer” in the New York Jhmes.
—The British authorities at Malta
refused to arrest Surratt, or he would
not have reached Alexandria, where he
was arrested. Os course the Yankees
are abusing John Bull lustily.
—The Louisville Democrat says Gen.
Sherman and Mr. Campbell went to
Mexico to find out what they went for.
They hardly found it necessary to go
(o fur to find out what they came hack
for.
l’hotosculpture, a French invention,
by which one can get a perfect bust of
himself as easily as to sit for a photo
graph, has just been introduced at New
York. The sitter is aimed at by twenty
four cameras, placed in a circle of which
he is the centre; and the busts are
necessarily quite expensive.
—lt is a singular coincidence that
Major General Grant, a Scotch officer
in the British army, in 1778 defeated
General Lee, in command of the Amer
ican forces in New Jersey, and was
sfterwards promoted to the rank of
Lieutenant General, and subsequently
to that of General, in the British army.
He died “very old,” at his seat at Bal
iendallock, near Klgin, Scotland.
—A Long Cuxbk. —Captain Charles
A. Boujplle, of Augusta, Maine, recov
cred a watch recently which was stolen
from him six years ago in Liverpool,
England. He was in a concert room
at the time it was stolen, and immedi
ately made the fact known to the detec
fives there, who, after six years, sue
reeded in finding it.
—The Supreme Court has just decided
that the officers of a corporation have no
right, in an action in which they are a
Party, to take, under a subpoena ducta
tecum, the books from the company s
office. The Judge, in giving his de
rision, says: “It may he doubted whether
third persons have any right to a
general examination of the books of a
corporation.”
