I knew the© net. fiii girl—thy cyo Hath never gazed in mine. Anil yet this requUrn wreath of song Above thy grave I twine: For heart© that loved thee but too well— For those thou didst loie too, Aml one who loved thee best of all, I weep tbfw tear? for you. Oh ! 5aU. indeed trust hr tho hearts, ?*wcet girl, that loved thee so, An l lonely life must be fir them, And bitter be their woo ! Ah! I have seen the loved one laid Beneath the grave’s damp clod. And felt how much of hope and joy Was buried ’ueath that sod. And I can weep with those who weep Above thy early tomb, For well I know that life for thorn Is shadowed now with gloom ! By hearts that fondly loved thee hero Thou wilt not be forgot; The place where thou dost sweetly sleep Will be a hallowed spot. Affo'tion’s hand will plant fair flowers, To blossom o’er thy grave ; The blushing rose and lily w hite, la beauty there w ill wave; And theie, the one who loved thee best, Will wreathe above tho spot A garland of his tears —and plant The sweet Foryet me-not ! And other fond hearts too, will biing Love’s holy offering there, While with this requiem-wreath for thee, T twine a stranger’s tear ! Ahove « lonely nt> ■> r yrove Thy hand jilactd ’lowers to bloom, And one who knew thee not, entwines This garland o’er thy tomb. They tell me thou wert good and true, And thou wert young and fair— That Heaven had stamped the angel On the fair, frail image hero: Alas! that such a lovely flower Should only bloom to die! Transplanted now by angel hands, To blossom in the sky. A fragile flower, too frail to bear The chilling Autumn’s blast; She blossomed with the summer flowers, With them from earth she passed ! Tho roses fade in winter times, She faded, too, with them ; E’en as the lovely lily droops And withers on its stem ! Tiio hectic, like a rosy tint, Grew brighter on her cheek ; While every day the fee Vo pulse Os life was growing weak ! Lovo nursed her then with tenderness, And sought to keep her here— 7. • Heavenly Father loved htr ton, And, #o, lie called her there ! The weary feet will tread no mure Life’s rugged journey now ; And never will the beauty fado From that fair angel brow 1 Oh ! weary one—God gave thee rest — Sweet be thy dreamless sleep ! Why should we bend in sorrow now, Above thy grave to weep? The pearly gates were opened wide, To lot’thc pilgrim in : The Saviour’s hand unloosed for thee Tho prison-bars of sin ! Sleep now in peace—no footstep rude Thy dreamless: rest, can break, 'Till Christ shall call the dead to life And thou again shall wake! A. M. I consider these Headers admirably adapted to secure the end for which they ha/o been prepared. The selections are judicious, and the ar rangement is excellent. Heading is here ’ resented as an art; tho consecutive meth ods of instruction are thoroughly exhibited, while the principles of correct and elegant Heading, with the illustrations that em body them, are so happily introduced, that easy and natural progress may be made. I am particularly pleased with the NEM SIXTH READER. This work has peru , liar merits. It combines, iu an eminent de gree, the best features of our most philo losphic systems of Elocutionary Heading: and, apart from its other recommendations, is especially worthy of the attention of Teachers on the ground of its eclectic value. I shall introduce the New Sixth Leader into the Elocutionary Department of this Uni versity. A. A. LIPSCOMB. Chancellor.” “Butler's Grammars impress me very favorably. So far ns T have been able to examine them, they stfike me as very suc cessful efforts to adapt the subject of Gram mar to young minds. They teach the pupil how to think in the .study of Grammar; and as most Grammars fail at this point, I can very fully commend these books to the at tention of Teachers. A. A.
