City Printer—Official Paper
LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION
FRIDAY MORNING Jan. 4, 18*7
T H eVtIN LOWS-
I .land In the odd ami cheerless street,
'Mid the thickly 'ailing non,
And gate, with a sad and aching heart,
At the windows bright with the warmth
and light
Which gladdens the walls within;
While the snow comes down on the roofs of
the town,
And theslreolt to Ailed with tin.
I think of the hearths where the Are light
shines,
And the forms that are gathered there,
Os the pleasant faces lit up by the glow,
And the h ippy smiles thoy wear.
I think of them all, while the snow-flakes
fall, *
At I gate through a mist of tears;
And out of the vast and hidden Past
Comes the ghost of other years.
Once I had wealth and a host of friends,
I had once a hetue and a wife,
And a fair-haired child, with a radiant face,
To gladden the hours of life—
But my wealth it has fled, my child is long
dead,
And my wifo she left me to grieve:
And my host of friends (there the sad talc
ends!)
They one and all took leave.
And here to-night in the cheerless street,
’Mid the thickly falling snow,
I stand and gasc, with an aching heart,
At the windows all aglow ;
A vagrant, I—who in days gone by
Had servants to wait at my call—
With no (riend to greet, and no home but
the street,
Where blinding snow-flakes fall.
I watch the shadows that more within,
As they quickly come and go;
And sometimes a face draws near to the
pane.
To look on the street below—
Too look on the street where the passing
feet
Are scarcely heard to tread;
Where tho snow from tho skies like a pale
shroud lies,
Like a shroud that covers the dead.
It is sometimes tho face of a child I see,
And sometimes a maiden’s fair,
With jewels of price in each delicate car,
And a flower entwined with her hair;
It i« sometimos a wife in the noon of life, j
Or a matron in her prime;
And sometimes a face where the eye may
trace
Thefnrrows which deepen with time.
The children laugh in their innocent glee
As they watch the falling snow;
The maid listens to catch a step,
A step th.-ti she has learned to know ;
The young wife smiles as some thought be
guiles
The loving heart in the breast;
And the old man's eyes glance up at tho
skies,
Where the good have hopes of rest.
Rest! what a word is that to one
With no home but the cheerless street —
Where even the dogs shrink back with a
growl
At the houseless wretch they meet.
Ob, when will bo tho light, so warm and
bright,
In the windows cease to shine ?
For the glow on the walls to my mind re
calls
The eomforts that once were mine.
Tite Female Beauties of Ireland. —
. Monsieur Felix, one of the writers of
the Constutionelle, having made a tour
through Ireland this summer, pro
nounces the following eulogium upon
the women of- that country: The most
remarkable element, the richest, and,
certainly, the most full of life, of this
land so life-full, is the population itself.
No European race, that of the Caucas
siau excepted,.can compete with it in
beauty. The Irish blood is of a purity
and distinction, especially among the
females, which strikes all strangers with
astonishment. The transparent white
ness of the skin, the absorbing attrac
tion, which, in France, is but the attri
bute of one woman in a thousand, is
here the general type. The daughter
of the poor man, as well as the fine
lady, possesses an opal or milky tint,
the anus of a statue, the foot and hand
of a duchess, and the bearing of a
'queen.
In the most wretched streets of the
olden quarters of Dublin, the most ideal
tintiligs of the pencil would grow pale
before the beauty of the children ; and
in the compact crowd which each day
occnpics the galleries of Merrion Square,
there is certainly the most magnificent
collection of human beings it is possible
to meet. Blondes with black eyes, and
brunettes with Hue, are by no means
rare. The lace is as strong as it is
handsome, as vigorous as it is charming.
The girls of Connemara, with their
queenly shoulders, and eyes of fire,
would put to shame, at this day, those
daughters of the East from whom they
are said to be descended.
Novel Mode ok Committing Suicide.
' —The following extraordinary account
of a determined attempt at suicide is
gravely related by the Epoca of
Madrid: “The indfvidua! in question
being tired of bis life, resolved to take
such measures as must infallibly ensure
his death. To that end he started for
the sea shore, provided with a ladder, a
rope, a loaded pistol, a bottle of poison,
and a box of matches. Having some
time before discovered a post standing a
little way out in the water, he fixed his
ladder against it, and ascending, fastened
one end of the cord to the top and passed
a slip knot arouud his neck, swallowed
the poisoit, and striking a light, set fire
to his clothes; then placing the pistol to
bis'ear, kicked away the ladder, but in
doing so, his hand swerved, and, as he
fired at the same moment, the bullet,
instead of penetrating his brain, divided
the rope, and he fell into the sea, extin
guishing his burning garments; also, a
quantity of salt water he swallowed
. caused him to throw up the poison he
had taken ; so that he scrambled on the
shore, convinced that his time had not
yet arrived.”
—When is soup likely to run out of
the saucepan? When there is a leek
in it.
—A paper asks very innocently if it
is any harm to rfit in the lapse of ages ?
Another replies that it all depends on
the kind of ages selected. Those from
eighteen to twenty-five, it puts down as
extra hazardous.
