SCISSORS.
—A Mrs. Palmer is preaching in St.
Louis.
—Ho who lives for himself alone lives
for a mean fellow.
—Terpsichorean amusements in Salt
Lake City are opened with prayer.
—Utter no word that will wound the
feelings of those who are in humble cir
cumstances.
—A clergyman in Chicago lectured
recently on “A short bed and a narrow
cover-lid.”
—A Congressional prayer meeting
society has been organised. May it prove
beneficial. —Boston Post.
When Congressmen pray they prry
upon the treasury. —Louisville Journal.
—Bishop Potter has been made the
recipient of an elegant residence by his
friends. In the meantime, the subject
of anew diocese in Brooklyn, and a
second in Albany is actively discussed.
—A Catholic Fair, held in the Music
Hall, Boston, recently, for the benefit
of Boston College and the Church of
the Immaculate Conception, uetted
$30,728.25.
—The Pope had addressed an invita
tion to all the Bishops of the world, to
[assemble at Rome in June, 1867, to
[celebrate the martyrdom of Peter and
(Paul, and the canonization ot several
■nartrrs.
[ The old Emigrant Aid Society of
■Boston, which has been nearly dormant
(since the days of the Kansas troubles,
[has come to the surface again, and is
making arrangements to seud colonies
to Florida.
—The following is given ns the sta
tisties of the Protestaut Episcopal
Church in this country, including the
Southern States: Whole number of
parishes, 2,306 ; number of clergy.
2,530; total membership, 161,225;
contributions the past year, $3,951,667.
Theodore Tilton writes to the Inde
pendent : “ There is more hilarity among
Western than among Eastern people.
Work is more of a play here than at
home. More than half the laughter
done by the American people falls from
the mouths of Western men.”
St. Stephen's Catholic Church in
New York was dedicated on Sunday by
Archbishop McQloskey, This is the-,
church which was under the pastorate
of the late Dr. Cummings, and its en
largement has been completed since his
death, so that it now has the greatest
capacity of any church in NewYork.
—The following is a record of events
n NewYork for the year just closed:
There were thirty live homicides, thirty
lix infanteides, sixty one suicides Os
the latter twelve hung themselves, twelve
used the pistol, five took paris green
and one took Co-star's rat exterminator ;
two hundred and thirty seven persons
were drowned, aud thirty eight deaths
resulted from burns.
—Tbe New York papers refer to
brothers Hazleton, Wagstaff, and Mur
phy, as an organization calk and “Tlie
Graying Band,” of Troy. They and
some forty others hold themselves in
readiness to go into the country when
ever and wherever they tnay be invited
to pray. Their labors ore followed in
variably by a pronounced religious ex
citement, and revivals are anticipated
in the Western part of the State by the
faithful.
—On Sunday evening, an intense
excitement was created in St. Peter’s
Roman Catholic Church, Philadelphia.
One of the candles upon tbe altar was
tipped over, and the flame com
ing in contact with some drapery,
set it on fire. A panic ensued aifiong
the congregation, but the coolness of
Isoine ot the members allayed the fear
of those who were making frotft the
building, and thus prevented any acoi
ients. '1 he burning drapery was speed
ly extinguished.
Dr. Cumming writes a letter
10 the London YYwics, denying that
n a sermon recently preached by
liin he stated that the consummation of
all things and the end of the year was
fixed for the past year, 186 G. All he
said was, that we mny expect before the
year is out tbe final judgment on the
Papacy. He adds: “The earth, I be
lieve, is to be transformed, not annihi
lated. I have stated in a work pub
lished in 1860, called 'The Last warn
ing Cry,’ and illustrated by historical
ptoofs in a work which Nesbet will pub
lish in a few days, entitled ‘ The Sound
ing ot the Last Trumpet,’ that the great
prophetic epochs, on the fairest and
most reliable data, expire in 1867.”
In a Da.noekous Position.— About
Tour o’clock on Saturday afternoon, a
nan ascended to the top of the new St.
’eter’s Church, in Grand street, Jersey
lity, for the purpose of domg some
’ork. While thus engaged, a ladder
omc thirty feet in length, was removed,
bus cutting off all means of descending
rom the belfry. This the man discov
red on completing his work, but neither
y his outcries, or by sounding the bell,
r as he enabled to make his situation
uowr. until 8 P. M., when he attracted
he attention of some citizens who went
0 his assistance. Had he remained all
light, he would, in all probability have
icrislied from the cold.

VEGETABLE
KlilEli
STILL TRIUMPHANT !
And after a thorough trial
by innumerable living witnesses, Las
proved itself to be
TIIE MEDICINE OF THE AGE.
Although there have beon many med:ci
nal preparations brought before the public
since the first introduction of Perry Davis'
Vegetable Pain Killer, and large amounts
expended in their introduction, the Pain
Killer lias continued steadily to advance in
the estimation of the world as tho best
family medicine ever introduced. As an
internal aud external remedy, it is truly a
source of
Joy to the World!
One positive proof of its efficacy is, that
tho sales have constantly increased, and
upon its own merits, as the proprietors have
not resorted to advertising to gain for it the
rank it now holds among the great number
of preparations of the present time. The
eflect of the Pain Killer upon the patient,
when taken internally in cases of Colds,
Coughs, Bowel Complaints, Cholcia, Dys
entery, and other affections of tho system,
has been truly wonderful, and has won for
it a name among medicinal preparations
that can never be forgotten. Its success in
removing pains, as an external remedy, in
cases of Burns, Bruises, Sores, Sprains,
Cuts, Stings of insects, and other causes of
suffering, has secured for it such a host of
testimony, as an almost infallible remedy,
that it will be handed down to posterity as
one of the greatest medical discoveries of
the nineteenth century. Tbo magical ef
fects of the Pain Killer, when taken or used
according to directions, are certain. You
have only to be sure that, you buy the
genuine article and adhere to the directions
in its use, and you will admit, its wonderful
medicinal properties.
The genuine Perry Davis’ Pain Killer is
now put up in panel bottles, with the words
Davis’Vegetable Pain Killer blown in the
glass ; and with two steel engraved labels
on each bottle—one an excellent likeness of
Perry Davis, the original inventor of the
mediciuo, the other a steel engraved note of
hand. None others can bo relied upon ms
genuine. Prices of bottles 12£ cunts, 25
cents, 50 cents, and sl, respectively.
Valuable 3fedici>e —We presume no
medical preparation ever offered to the pub
lic has been more thoroughly tested than
PERRY DAVIS' PAIN KILLER. Thou
sands ot persons, were they called upon to
do so, would cheerfully testify that they
have used it for various ills, with the most
satisfactory success. It is within our own
knowledge that an immense amount of suf
fering has been relieved by it. Its pro
prietors, Messrs. Perry Davis & Son, save
no pains or expense in order to satisfy tbo
ftiblic. Being strictly honorable men, they
observe the utmost uniformity in tho man
ufacture of their celebrated Pain Killer.
The materials of which it is composed aro
carefully selected—nouo but the best quality
being used. By these means tho high repu
tation which the Pain Killer has long since
acquired is, at all timos, triumphantly sus
tained. In view of these fuels, we are by
no men ns surprised to learn that Messrs.
Davis <t Ron’s sales arc constantly and
rapidly increasing. While, we congratulate
our friends generally that so valuable a
preparation as the Pain Killer is placed
within their reach, we must bo permitted to
rejoice at the well-merited success of its
liberal and enterprising proprietor.—Provi
dence General Advertiser.
