LARBKBT CITY CIRCULATION
SUNDAY MORNING J*n, «, I8«7
I Put tin Dint hut)
UNDER THE SNOW.
BY CABRIB HULL SINCLAIR.
Sleeping uniter the foiling mow I
Two of tbo household band;
On* whom the Southern braetea blow,
And uno iu A Northern land.
One with a crown of tattering
Pressing the pale, cold brow ;
And one wilh the hi kkl of the battle field
Kitting the fair cheek now !
Oh ! tad it the requiem rung to me,
The winter winds new tighj
For under this tuow—this beautiful tnow,
Mar/ and Willie lie !
*Twat only a year ago to-day
Mary watched the snow-flakes fall.
And spoke of a shroud as pure and white,
And the dmopiag funeral pall 1
For aha knew that the anow—the apotleas
L . anow 1 ,•
Aa it fell ao soft and light,
Would fall o'er a new-mado grave when the
I.ay wrapt in her garments white.
And aadly I ait and dream to-day,
Aa I watch the old year die,
Os the household graves ! —whsre under the
. snow
Willie and Mary Ho!
'Tie jnst one year ago to-day
Our Willie, ao young and brnTe,
Was laid to rest 'neath the rain that fell
O’er ids new-made soldier gravo!
And sadly I wept above that sod, ,
O'er the form of the loved one there,
Where the golden looks, all wet with blood,
Drooped over the forehead fair!
And I watch the falling snow to-day,
As oarelets ones pass by,
And think of the snow-white graves afar,
Whore Mary and Willie lie!
Ah ! many a heart is weeping now,
As they watch this falling snow,
And think of tbo missing ones at home,
And the graves whore they He so low;
Some pause by the grave just newly made
To place the loved one there,
And the spotless breast of the pure, white
enow
Folds to it the mourner's tear !
God pity them on this dreary day !
For oh ! it is sad, I know,
To turn from the grave where the loved one
sleeps
Under the falling snow !
Oh ! ye who tread with a careless step
Over this spotless snow,
Thank heaven that on your path to-day
There falleth no hitter woe !
And lightly upon its bosom now
Let the careless step bo pressed,
Anu remember the graves ! —the holy graves
Where so many loved ones rest.
Ah! pure and holy it seems to me,
As the silvery flakes float by :
For under this snow—this falling snow
Mary and Willie lie!
Oh ! the snow ! the beautiful snow !
I love to see it fall,
And watch the busy little hands
That gather the spotless ball;
It falls as if it seemed to know
That its loy touoh would blight ,
As if it pities the aching hearts
That are not happy and light.
And it toerns almost a sin to weep.
As the shadowy flakes float by ;
But under this snow—this beautiful snow I
Willie aud Mary lie I
I lore to look oat on the spotless snow
As it falls so soft and light;
For the earth seems far more lovely now
Under these robes of white!
And I know ’tie God who sends it, too,
As it fails so lightly down ;
Or this old year would not lie to-day
Undor this snowy crown !
And, perchance, ere another year has died
I, too, may bo sleeping low,
Like Mary and Willie, who swootly rest
Under this falling snow !
'Tis the Heavenly Father doeth all—
His ways are always best;
And when these weary hands are clasped
Over my pnlseless breast;
But pray that my robes may be as white
As the pare snow drifting down.
And holy and bright in heaven may shine
A beautiful angel crown !
As you think of her who is weaving now
This reqniem-w roath of woe,
Will you weep when with Mary and Willie
I be
Under the beautiful snow ?

Boys, Read This.—ln the library at
the capital of this State may be found a
copy of the revised code of Alabama,
campiled by Hon. Turner Reavis, under
appointment of Governor Moore, of
that State, in 1800 :
Judge Renvis had been on the bench
of the Circuit Court, of the State, for
ten years.
Some of the oldest citizens of Raleigh
will recollect this same Turner Reavis
as a shop boy in the bakery and candy
store of old Mr. Bacchardi, who did
business in the city within the recollec
tion of the present inhabitants. The
Turner Reavis, of the Bacchardi candy
and cake shop in Raleigh, and the Hon.
Turner Reavia, Judge ol the Circuit
Courts, and compiler of the revised
codes of Alabama, are one and the same
person. He raised himself by liis own
unaided efforts from the 6liop to the
beneh. Boys, many of you can do the
same, or at least ns well, if you will
pursue the same industrious course that
he did. —Raleigh Index.
Westward, llol—The Liberty (Miss..)
Herald lias the following in relation to
the Western tide of emigration : “The
restless spirit of Yankeedom must cer
tainly he at work among the people o!
Georgia and Alabama, or else the
-goober-pea crop has fallen short in those
States, for every day or so a long train
of wagons, filled with household and
kitchen furniture, women and babies,
followed by any number of tow-headed
urchins, little niggers, and half starved
'dogs, while some distance in the rear
comes, paterfamilias, mounted on his
faithful “old critter,” pass through our
village on the way to the West, all going
Texasward, and no danger of their being
crowded in that roomy State.”
