FOR LOVERS!
Don’t woo then alone with caresses,
Nor efft-r bright jewels and rings,
They may do very well for a season,
But at last they are trifling things.
Don’t swear by your heart you adore them,
Nor offer yonr hand oo your kuoes,
If the soul is sincere in devotion
The simplest lip-language will please.
But pray don’t go wild with affection,
It may do very well for a time ;
It may cause them to pass a sweet evening,
Or give them a subjeet for rhyme;
But there are other things too to be thought
of,
When a lad to bis sweetheart goes wooing,
Far kisses alone won’t support you—
There’s work for the hands to be doing !
Has French society become better
during the reigu of its savior ? Let
Louis Veullot be the judge. Here are a
few extracts from his recently published
book, Les Odeurs de Paris, Speaking
of theatrical exhibitions, he writes:
“What is dieadfinty shocking is the
means nsed to attract the public. The
bait is a naked woman. Ido not speak
• of the horror of the soul at such a sight,
but airaply of tire horror of the eye. The
spectacle is more awful than unmannerly.
The declasses exhibited on the stage,
wot ooly have horrid ugly faces, but
their figures are atrociously deformed ;
some are bow-legged, others crooked,
and every one of them are impudent
and clumsy, not knowing how to walk or
bow to stand. Oh, dreadful deforma
tions of the moulting crane.” “Fancy
you are i» the drawing-room of a pro
vincial actress beginning to decline—a
smoking lamp, stained silks, and tinsels
scattered upon the dingy furniture,
twenty rancid cosmetics—there is the
■Cfcnerf, The lady dresses herself while
speaking with her friends; she dyes aud
paints; she stuffs herself; she hangs
glossy hair upon her scanty, greasy curls;
she plants teeth into her gums; she cries
at every gray hair left on her domb; she
laughs; she drinks brandy ; she mends
her court mantle ; she narrates her past
victories; she is ready. The curtain
rises ; she plays Celiraene. Do you not
feel dismayed, disgusted, terrified ? Do
you not run away to avoid that breath,
that paint, that hoarseness ?”
The Negro at Howe—Two Hun

to the Genii. — A letter trom Lagos, on
the coast of Africa, says: “The frigate
Zenoble, carrying the flag of Rear Ad
miral Viscount Flenfiot de Langie,
commanding the French naval squadron
on the West coast of Africa, bus just
visited St. Paul de Loande, the chief
place of the Portuguese establishment
of Southern Guinea. The day after tire
arrival of the frigate at Lagos, an Eng
lish steamer brought news from I)ulio
mey. The King was preparing to go to
war with the Ashantces, and to propiti
ate fortune had ordered two hundred
men to be sacrificed to the Genii. This
5s the third time within a vesr that he
has indulged fn this horribfe barbarity
The total number of deaths in the
rity ot liOrfisvHhf, during the month ot
December lust, was only bne hundred
and thirty six, certainly a very small
mortality in a city of I2f», 00(1 inhabitants,
Os those nearly one half were children
under five years of age.
