t£bt Mil) s!rcss. City Printer—Official Paper LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION THURSDAY MUKNIMiI Jau. 10, 1807 OVBR THE MOUNTAINS HIGH. FROM THK NORWEGIAN OE RJORK3TJCR.SE BJORM3OK. What »Wt I se* if ever t m Over the mountains high ? Mow, I can see hat the peaks of snow, Crowning the cliffs where the pine-trees grow, ’■ailing «n44ongl*g to rise Nearer the beckoning Okies. The eagle is rising afar away Orer the mountains high. Rowing along in the radiant day With Riighty strokes to hit distant prey. Where he will, swooping downwards, Whole he will, sailing onwards. Apple-tree, longest thou not to go Orer the mountains high ? Gladly thou growest in summer's glow, Patiently waiting through winter’s snow ; Though birds ia thy branches swing. Thou knowest not what they sing. He who has twenty years longed to flee Orer the mountains high— He who beyond them never will see, Bin tiler, -aud smaller, each year must be; He heats what the birds ssy, While on thy brows they play. Birds, with your chattering, why did ye ectno Orer the mountains high 7 Beyond, in a Summer land ye could roam, And nearer to heaven could build your home; Why have ye come to bring Longing, without your wing 7 Shall I, then, never, never ilea Over the moantains high ? Rocky \Calls, will ye alwnya be Prisons until ye are tombs for me 7 Until X lie at your feet Wrappod in tny winding sheet? Away ! I will away, far away, Over the mountains high ! Here, I am sinking lower each day, Though my spirit has chosen the loftiest way; Let her in froedom fly ; Not—beat on the walls and die ! Oneo, I know, I shall journey far Over the mountains bigb. Lord, is thy door already ajar? Dear is tbo home wLero thy saved ones are; But bar It awhile for me, And help mo to loug for Thee. Utah—Polygamy and the Social Evil. —The Salt Lake Telegraph , in a two column editorial, indignantly denies the oft-repeated assertion that perfect freedom of speech, politics, religion, ete., is prohibited there. It says a man can be anything he pleases; can go with the majority or minority as suits him best, hut if a man will abuse these privileges, he must take the consequen ces. It adds: “We will here state what cannot be controverted, that our citizens compose the only community in the country which does thoroughly believe in aud sustain the Good Book, the ex cellent Constitution of these United States, and every wholesome human law. When a community arrives at that point, it is able to stand, to endure. We do not have the vanity to believe sincerely and earnestly that our marriage doc. trines are the purest and best on earth, and that they are designed to rid a com munity of that most fearlul of all lepro sies—“the social evil,” and are capable of coping with, and vanishing it too, which is a feat that the statesmanship! the civilization, and the Christianity ofthe age, it is confessed by their prefessors, are utterly unable to do, they are com pletely overwhelmed by the evil, and are as helpless in the midst of it as a tem pest-tossed and a rudderless vessel in the midst of the breakers.” Clover. —The Central Georgian, Saiidcrsville, Ga., one of our valued ex changes, has recently introduced a dis tinct agricultural department in its columns—a feature which increases greatly the interest of the paper to the majority of its patrons. Hie new editor, Col. H. D..Capers, says in regard to our being able to grow clover and blue grass in Middle Georgia : “Upon this subject, there can be no dispute, when the de. jnonstrations of facts, now existing in Middle Georgia, are brought to the at tention of the skeptical. In Newton county, south of Athens, and in an air line not more than fifty miles north of this point, Red Clover is grown to great profit. Let those who doubt call upon Rev. Dr. Thomas, President of Emory College, and see his clover field as luxu riant and as producible as any in the uplands of Virginia or Tennessee. The park in Covington has it growing beau tifully with blue grass.” Music ik the Sunday School.— Every superintendent and teacher knows the value of music in the Sunday school. It is one of its chief attractions, and most profitable exercises. If you would have your Sunday school well attended, make its music attractive- If you would have your Sunday school effectual as a means of good, make its music efficient. Song has peculiar power to reach the heart aild arouse the feelings. All this is, in some measure at least, understood, and appreciated, and the problem, often a difficult one, is how to make the music what it should be. No one means is more important to this end than a good accompanying instru ment. However excellent the leader may be, he needs an instrument to help him; and where the leade.r has not much confidence in himself, an accom panying instrument is of yet more im portance. Such an instrument will attract and iutenest the children ; will induce them to try to sing, and render it much easier for them to do so. It will add vastly to the impressive ness of the music : and, indeed, so great is its value that no Sunday school which has enjoyed the use of a good one will after wards bo satisfied to do without it. 'Sensible. —The negroes of Dr. 0. Early, of Memphis, returned to him last week, and claimed and received their former situation. Lured off by Bureau agents, they stated that they had been told they must work for a month, which left them llio alternative to steal, starve, or go back to their master, Cottar’s Exterminators. hy c l M TERMINATORS-^ *• 18 years rata Wished iu N.
