GODDESS OF SLANG,

Au 4 100 god to hoor breathed thoowoot Uttio
That told mo oho would bo mloo ;
I was praising tho wonlth ol her choonut
And bo/'rroo of potebVeo'* hfuo,
When she laid her door chooh on my ohouWor

“llurruh ! fW( billy for you s
I otorlod in terror, hot m»n*g*d to keep
From ibowing my intense ourprioe.
And pressed my Itpn lightly on brow und on

And then on her meekly closed eyes ;
I told her my love was as deep as tho sea,
(As I felt her heart go pit-patter),
I would worship her always if the would be

And she whispered, 44 0 k! that $ tckal»

I told her that her cheek would the rose put
to shame,
'Her teeth the famed Orient poor),
And the ocean’s rich cornl oo'nM never
compare
With the lips of my beautiful girl ;
That her voice was like music that comes to
In the night time—and sweet was her
smile
As that of nu angel, and softly she breathed,
“Os tkat so% cua jut! bet your file!"
In the hush of the starlight I still whispered
on,
And pressed her more close to my breast;
Talked sweeter then Korneo, dearer thau
Claude,
And told her how true love was blest;
Os bliss ia a cottuge, of flowers and birds,
(Tbaugh I felt at times strange out of
joint),
When she looked with a smile, and daintily
lisped
In my ear, "/ can't quite see the point!”
I pressed her still closely, I talked still more
sweet,
Called the stars to look down on our love,
Made love rhyme to dove, and kiss rhyme
to bliss,
And vowed by the heavens above
I’d be constant and true if sho'd only be
mine;
Pressed her lips and caressed her brown
locks,
When she answered me back, with a rich,
saucy laugh,

Rkmarkabi.b Movement among the
Jews. —The Indian Purtugueza. a Por
tugnese journal published in Goa, states
that great excitement has been caused
among the Jews in Bombay by the pub
lication by their pontiff, H. B. Kyon,
“member of the family of Aaron,” who
has lately come to Bombay from Jeru
salem, of a pamphlet under the title of
“The Voice of the Vigilant,” the object
of this “Voice” being to persuade the
Jews that it is useless to wait any longer
for the promised Mesiah, as this is Jesus
Christ himself, “whose doctrines have
been spread all over the world, without
sword or force.”
The “Voice” is said to use arguments
that are solid and conclusive. “Com
pare,” says the pontiff, “the Old and
New Testaments, and the truth will be
seen.” He also adds that he was born
in the old law, and under it was elevated
to the pontificate ; but the light has
already penetrated with its rays into the
dead recesses of his mind, and he is,
therefore, persuaded, and with well
founded reasons, that the Messiah is now
looked for.
The Prospect. “ Hermes,” the
Washington correspondent of the
Charleston Mercury, has had an inter
view with a personage whose name he is
not authorized to divulge, who reassures
him in regard to the political future of
the country. He recalls the President’s
unwavering firmness against overwhelm
ing odds, and the cool, determined man
ner, in which he has, during the present
session, when some persons thought he
was crushed, earned out his measures in
the case of Sickles, Schofield, and oth
ers. This person is of the opinion, that
the past guarantees the future, and cites
the comparative harmlessness of the
civil rights and freedmeD’s bureau bills,
as executed by the President, as ample
grounds of confidence in what may come
hereafter. There is no call for aggres
siveness on the part of the President,
knowing, as he does, that his steady
resistance, and the utter folly of their
measures, will wear the Radicals out in
time. Impeachment, tcrritorializntion,
any excessively radical scheme must fail,
for the reason, that both parlies are un
der bonds, to three thousand million of
dollars to keep the peace. They cannot
even seriously risk a collision. At the
most, we of the South have ouly to fear
a legalist or semi-loyalist change in our
State Governments, and even that he
doubts. “You cannot forget,” said he,
“the President's course at New Orleans,
during the convention which met for the
avowed purpose of subverting the gov
ernment, which Mr. Johnson had author
ized the people to form. See. too, how
quietly the ‘loyalists’ went under in Bal
timore.”
“Hermes” says the President stands
firm, and has never wavered in his policy
toward the South.
Tee Coiix Chop. —The monthly re
port of agriculture for December, con
tains a final estimate of the corn crop
of 18(16. The total result is 880,000.-
000 bushels. In the eleven States not
hitherto reported, 183,000,000 bushels,
against 274,000,000 bushels in 1850.
In twenty two Northern States, 670,-
000,000 bushels, stead of 704,000,000
bushels in 186(1, showing a decrease ot
29,000,000, while the decrease in qual
ity is equivalent to 73,000,000 bushels,
making a loss in feeding value equiva
lent to 100,000.000 bushels.
—A new fire extinguisher has been
tested at Detroit. A man can carry it
on bis back. It throws a liquid which
at once destroys fire.
Mount Hood was plainly seen from
Salem, Oregon, on the 19th ult., sending
forth volumes of smoke, which puffed
upwards like the steam from an exhaust
pipe.
