TWj m coning, happy children,
Sr boot ii oat and thty’ra at play,
Coming through tho lan* and orchard,
Sandy not tho ucaroat way.
Rosy cheeks and ayat that aparkla,
Laugh that’a ringing load and free,
Cana rant dia of childish prattle,
Not a heart but’* flloil with glen.
Rowing hare and than ’arid flowers,
Playing drive, or taka a rida,
Counting o’ar tho mountain frolioa,
Source alike of jay and pride.
Naught ran they far wealth or faahina,
Bonnet* twinging in the hand,
Fair look* an freely waring,
'Bound the brow* ao deeply tanned.
Little hat* an clutched half brimleM,
Batter die* mast now taka care,
Banstetly, each jouthful sportsman
Longs to take them in his snare.
Tiny feat ase treading homeward,
By the brook and ’tong the hill,
Pausing at each downy bcrd’i nest,
And the rock* beside the mill.
Marry shout, and song*, and laughtar,
Fall united on the ear,
Sweat enough to rouse the languid.
And the drooping spirit cheer.
They are wearing childish fancies,
Sating through tho golden light,
Every day, as it advances,
Bringing something pure and bright.
Life with them it sport and pastime,
Earth a paradise of flowers.
And they rerel 'mid its besntie*.
Dreaming not of wintry hours.
Tali them net of their delusion,
Nor recite tome woeful tale,
Bettor list to their rejoicings
Than to hear them sigh and wail.
Soon enough they’ll share the anguish.
Soon enough will join the strife,
Bear the burdens and the ore sees,
Know indeed what’s meant by Life.
Brazilian Emigration.— A letter to
the Missouri Republican, from an
American in Brazil, Province of San
Paulo, says:
Os course your renders wish to know
if I would advise them to come to
Brazil. I answer, emphatically, no.
I am here and expect to stay till I see
more of it. After this I may become
satisfied to remain here, but if I were
now in the States, and knew ns much
of Brazil as I do, I would never come
to it. Yet, I believe that n young man
of energy, who is willing to forego all
the advantages of society, and to under
go all the hardships ana privations that
are to be encountered here, can come
. here, and in a few years make a band
some little fortune—enough, at least,
to give him a good start in business in
soma civilized and Christian country,
shonld he choose to leave this benighted
land. Bat as for bringing a wife and
children here at present, at least, I
could not and would not advise any
one. A few American families are in
Brazil. Others are soon expected. Yet,
immigration from the Southern States,
we are beginning to think, will not be
very large. Should what families that
are here now congregate into one neigh
borhood, and they be joined by others
from the State*, so as to give an Amer
ican cast to the society of any one loca
tion, 1 might be induced to bring my
family here.
Good Thing on B. Thoven. —The
Commercial Bulletin gets off" the follow
ing Boston joke, which is characteristic
of the City of Notions :
A gentleman of this city, entertaining
some friends a short time ago, at the
Music Hall, with a sight of the great
organ, and other curiosities of the place,
suddenly became aware of a series of
“nudges” iu his back, and turning became
also aware of a solemn countryman,
evidently of au inquiring mind, indica
ting the statue ot Beethoven with an
interrogating finger, asked in the uurois
takable pathos of New England :
“Is that statoo guilt ?”
“No. sir, bronze.” was the response.
“Brunze, hey ? Must cost considera
ble. Who is it the sUtoo ot V”
“Beethoven,” said the gentleman, be
ginning to be amused.
“B. Thoven, hey ?’’ aud then reflec
tively, with the impression of the statue
of B. Franklin fresh in his mind—“ Was
he a Bostin man 7”
A Chapter on Tomatoes. —The Ex
tra Early bears large crops of good
fruit, of medium size and scarlet crim
son color, which ripens a fortnight in
advance of all others ; hence it is prized
in private families, aud brings a higher
price in market than any other variety.
We have grown acres of it, and sold the
fruit for sl2 per bnshel, and by the time
the late verities ripened the price was
down to $1 per bushel. But when the
soil and air get moist in the fall the fruit
mildews and rots badly, therefore later
and more solid verities are necessary to
keep np a supply through the autumn,
until iroat cuts them off..
The best late varieties are the Favor
ite and Tilden; their fruits are more
round, solid, and full ot flesh than any
others, of uniform, medium size, and
scarlet crimson color; free of bard core
and hollow heart, and less subject to
rot than any other, and of the best
auality. Both crack in hot, dry weather;
the Tilden more so. But that does not
cause rot, nor injure the quality. The
flesh of the Favorite is of crimson color,
battery and sweet; the juice is sweet
and elastic, like syrup. The flekh of
the Tilden is pale red, and the core buff
color; the inner fle*h is buttery and
pleasant. There is a solid rind of flesh
inside of tht skin, a quarter ot an inch
thick, of Mi agreeable flavor; that rind
is a safeguard against injury in trans
porting the fruit to market. The juioe
M sprightly bud pleasant, and contains
moro vital essence than that of any
other variety ; in short, the Tilden is the
best, and the Favorite stands nest best;
yet each has peculiar virtues of itself,
which the other has not, therefore, both
should be grown to make a good whole.
The varieties should be grown us
remote from each other as the extent
of the grounds will admit of, for the
rcasou that their fructifying influences,
when they are in bloom, injure each
other and make the varieties impure,
just m cucumbers and musbmelons
destroy each other’s flavor when grow
iug close together. Cucumbers will
(aide of melons and melons taste ot
cucumbers.
The following varieties of tomatoes
were formerly considered good : Large
Smooth Red, Mammoth lied, Pear
shaped Red, Cherry Red, Fejee, Buff,
Large Yellow, Plum Yellow, aud Cherry
Yellow.
