Renan has in the press anew edition of the “Life of Jesus,” in which hq replies to M. Tickuor A Fields have jnst pub lished “Poems—Grave and Gay,” by George Arnold, author of “Sea Drift.'' They also announce “Six Hundred a Year,” showing how a family may live, even in these times, on that amount of currency. Grace Greenwood Is abont to publish anew volume of sketches. Harriet Beecher Stowe will issue in March, a volume of Religious Poems. James Partou has in press, by Tick nor A Fields, “Famous Americans of Recent Times.” All his books are about to be republished by the above house. The nett profits of the “Black Crook” representation in New York, for the last three mouths, are stated at one hundred and eighty-six thousand one hundred and twelve dollars. Edwin Booth appeared as “Romeo” at the Winter Garden last week. Julia Dean has left the stage and become a resident of Gotham. She is now the wife of Mr. J. E. Cooper. Among the artists who perished in the ill starred Evening Star, was M. Tapian. who was engaged for two years, for the sum of aO,OOO francs, and whose costumes, it is said, were alone woith 30.000 francs. Prof. Blot is in Philadelphia, teach ing the pretty Quaker girls how to cook. j.. Sig. Blitz is drawing crowded houses in Philadelphia, with the “Wood Min strels” and double-headed Sphynx. Dan Rice, the Western circus man, sails in the next steamer fur Havana, accompanied by kis wife,•*whose health has been poor for the past four year.-. It is reported that Gardner, the circus manager, has offered JDnn, on his re turn from Havana, $25,000 for twenty weeks’ work in the sawdust next season. Two hundred and thirty two mem bers of the dramatic, musical, minstrel, circus, aad kindred profession*, have died' within the past year. Each cord shall be eight feet in length, four feet in breadth, and four foot in height. Sec. IV. It shall be the duty of the Inspectors A Measurers of Wood, either hy themselves, or their Deputies, to super intoud tbe measuring of Wood, daily (Sundays excepted), from nine o’clock A. M. to twelve o’clock At., aud from three o’clock P. M. to five o’clock P. M., and the parlies selling or offering the same for sale, shall pay the Inspectors A Measurers of U ood twenty cents for each and every cord of wood.) aud in proportion for each half and quarter cord of wood; by them so measured. Sec- V. If the said Inspectors A Meas urers of Wood, shall retuse or neglect to -perform aDy ot the duties attached to their offices, they shall, on conviotion, ho fined in i sum not exceeding twenty dollars,fur each and every offence. If the said Inspectors A Meas urers of Wood, or their Deputies, shall be found guilty of collusion or maipractice to deceive in the quantity, they shall, upon Conviction, forfeit their licenses for the unexnired term thereof, and be disqualified from receiving another, and shall also be fined at the discretion of tbe City Council. Sec. VII. Any person or persons who shall refuse or neglect to have wood in spected and measured, before offering the same for sale, shall be fined in a sum not exceeding fifty dollars, for each and every such neglect or refusal. Sec. VIII. And be 1 1 further Ordained, That ali Ordinances and parts of Ordi nances militating against this Ordinance, be and the same are hereby repealed. C. jals lOt AN OitDIftANCE, To Amend and Explain An Ordinance to Assess Taxes for the support of tbo City of Augusta, for tho fiscal year ending 31st March, 1867. Sec. I. He it Ordained by the City Council of Auyueta, and it in hereby Ordained by the authority of the tame, That the clause in the socond section of said Ordinance levying a tax of one per cent, “on ihe capital stoex of any Incorporated Bank, (Gas, Insurance Company, or other Incorporated Company,) located in this City,” shall be'construed to mean, and was and is intended to mean that there shall be a Jtke tax levied and paid, by the owner or owners thereof, on the par value of each share of stock in any and all National Banks, or Banks of issue located and doiug business in ibis City ; Provided, that the Bank may assume and pay tho tax if preferred. Sec. 11.
