Tii sad. yet sweet, to listen
To tha •oft wind's gratia swoll,
Aid think we hear tho mueie
Oar childhood loved to writ ;
T# gara oat oa (ha arc,
And tha boaadlam Soldi of air.
And laal agaia oar boyhood’s with
To roaa lika aagcli there
Thar* ar* Many dtaawi of gtadaaa*
That cling aruaad tha pMt,
And from tha tomb of foaling
Old thoughts cunt thronging faat i
Tha forat we lored ao dearly,
la tha happy days now gona,
Tha baaatifnl and tha lorely,
So fair to look apon.
Thao* Wight and gratia maidens,
Who aacmad an farmed for hliaa,
Too glorieua and too heavenly
Far inch a world as this!
Whose dark soft eyas seem'd swimming
la a sea of liquid light.
And whom looks of gold were streaming
O'er brows so sunny bright.
Like the brightest bnds of summer,
They hare fallen from the stem;
Tat, oh! it is a lorely dream
To fhde from earth like them.
And yet the thought is saddening,
To muse oa such ns they,
And tool that nil the beautiful
Are passing swift away !
That the fair ones whom wo lore,
Grow to each loriog breast,
Like tendrils of the clinging rine,
And perish where they rest.
—A Mason’s Lodge is tlie temple of
peace, harmony, and brotherly lore.
Nothing is allowed to enter wbieh has
the remotest tendency to disturb the
quietude of its pursuits. A calm in
quiry into the beauty of wisdom and
rirtoe, and the study of moral geometry
mar be prosecuted without excitement
*«*> ft* constitute the chief employ
ment in the tile recesses of the Lodge.
The lessons of virtue from the East, like
rays -of brilliant light streaming from
the rising sou, illuminate the West and
South ; and, as the work proceeds, are
carefully imbibed by the workmen.
Thus, while Wisdom contrive* the plan
and instructs the workmen, Strength
lends its able snpport to the moral fabric,
and Beauty adorns it with carious and
cunning workmanship. All this is ac
complished without the use of axe,
or any other tool of brass or
iron, within the precinct of tbe temple,
to disturb the peaceful sanctity of the
same. — Morris.
—Time between Omaha and Salt
Lake City now is only eight days. Three
of them are occupied in the trip from
Omaha to Denver, and the remaining
fire from Denver lo Suit Lake City. In
this eight days’ travel there are three
hundred miles of railroading and nine
hundred of staging—total, one thousand
two hundred miles.
—Two young fellows got to bantering
each othor the other day, "Well, there
i* one thing,, yon can’t put your head
llto an empty barrel.” '‘Oh nonsene,”
exclaimed the other, “why can’t I."
“Because,” drily rejoined the first, “it
is imTvssible to put a hogshead into a
barrel.”
—We learn from tbe Mail that the
Irish citizens of Montgomery were to
have given a banquet on Tuesday eve
ning to Mr. J. F. Maguire, Member of
Parliament from Cork, Ireland, and
editor of the Examiner, sojourning for a
few days in that city.
—The bridge over the little Pe Dee,
near Harleesville, S. C., gave way re
cently, and precipitated a carriage filled
with young ladies into twenty toot water.
Strangely enough, the ladies, driver and
horse* all escaped uninjured.
—Letters of administration were
granted, Saturday, by proper authority,
to Richard Reed, a colored man, on the
estate of John Nixon, colored. This is
probably tbe first istanee of the kind on
record in the South.—A’. C. Paper.
—D- K. Jackman, of Philadelphia,
and Milton Cartwright, ot Erie, Pa.,
have purchased 3,000 acres of the rich
est Cotfon lands in South Carolina, and
intend putting it at once under cultiva
tion. The price paid wns sl2 per acre.
A California wife, in San Fran
cisco, writes thus to her husband in the
interior:
“Dear Sir : —lt may he proper, and
perhaps my duty, to inform you that
about two months ago, I succeeded iu
getting my divorce from you. and also
that I have since married again. You
may continue your monthly remittance,
as I may need them for your three
children.”
The Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Monitor says
there is a curious epidemic ragingamong
the nogroes in North port. It resembles
miaegitis, nnd is similar to a disease
that once made its appearance among
the students of the University. They
are attacked suddenly aud die before
relief can be afforded.
