i£«Df tfatlg City Printer—Official Paper LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION TUBiDAY MORNING.. J»». 2s. IW7 A Kiss and it Consequences. •Biisiard,' 1 a Californian, relates the following In an epistle, in which he en deavors to prove (and does) that “any body can write poetry." It is a gem something after the manner of Poe s “Raven”—only more so: Said I, “My pratty ml»r, Let me have a lit le kiss,” And I raveled in the bliss, Rich and “mailer “Jest help yourself to more," Said she, tripping o'er the door, And backing toward the door Os the cellar. I never taw the trap Till I fell through it “kerslap,” And you should have seen mo “drap” Through the hole! Ball twenty feet I fell— Bow I struck I cannot toll— But I sent up such a yell, On my soul; That the girl thought I was dying, And at once sent np a crying For the old man who was trying, Not far off, To mend a broken pump; He turned, and with a jump, Cleared a shed and tumbled plnmp In a trough! But what baa this to do With the story, which is true As the gospel, old or new t With a hop lie came up, inquired the matter, “Whenoe the screaming and the clatter?’’ He had half a mind to rap her On the top Os Qie head. She meekly pointed Down the steps, where I, disjointed, Lay with mud and grease anointed On the floor. “Blissard” up those steps was oarried ; Quite a month there “Blissard” tarried ; In two months was “Blissard” married; Nothing more! —The Turkish Minister in Paris has lost a million of francs gambling. —Wiggins was one day with a friend, when he observed a poor dog that had been killed, lying in the gutter. Wig gins paused, gazed at the dead animal, and at last said : “Here is another ship wreck.” “Shipwreck, where?” “There’s alrark that’s lost forever.” His com panion growled and passed on. —There is a boy down East who is accustomed to go out on the railroad tract and imitate the steam whistle so perfectly as to deceive the officer at the station. His last attempt proved emi nently successful.; the depot. master came out and switched him off. —Thad. Steven’s bad breeding, when he moved the House of Representatives to adjourn without listening to the Presi dent’s Message, was more than equalled by the New Jersey legislators, who ad journed after hearing the first few lines of Governor Ward’s Message, and gave the rest the go-by for the day. —At Santa Csuz, California, on the 15th ult., a Justice Rhodehouse was try ing one C. J. Richards for a trespass, when the friends of the prisoner came in, hauled the Justice off the bench, and tarred and feathered him all over. The severe punishment of one day’s impris onment was meted out to the playful violators of the ermine. The New York Evening Express has the annexed cool one. We hardly think it IT»S mrwdc expreahljr tor tint journal Fortune tellers and tilting hoops ope rate differently. The former reveals what the lady will be in the future ; the latter reveals what she is in the present. —Old lady (to a hackman) —“But these hacks nre dangerous. You never know who rides in them. We inny get the small pox.” Coachy—“You’ve no cause to be afeared of my coach, mum, for I’ve ’nd the hind wheels waccinated, and it took beautiful.’' —Everybody calls that little, that they love best oil earth. We once heard a good sort of a man speak of his little wife, and we fancied that she must be a perfect little bijou of a wife. We saw her, and she weighed 210 ; we were sur prised. But then it was no joke; the man meant it. He could put his wife in his heart and have room for other things beside; and what was she but precious, and what was she but little ? Milltum in pari-o —much in little—is, the great beauty of all we love best, hope for mo3t, and remember the long est. “Xylon.”—“Quondam,” the able and conservative Augusta correspondent of the New York Times, in his letter of Jan. Bth, says of our contributor “Xy lon A gentleman, who is said to be a law yer of high distinction, and an ex-Judge, is writing a series of letters in the Daily Press, of this city, over the signature of “Xylon,” in which he is giving his fel low citizens earnest advice against the “masterly inactivity policy, and in favor of doing everything they can to obtain peace on any terms which honor and self respect will allow. I have only been able to see one of |the letters, but that one was so conservative as well ns conciliatory, I desire to see more, and believe that they will do good.
