’•The Policy" Going North.
It seems that the policy of Congress,
or rather ot the Radical portion of Con
gress. is threatening the North, as well
as the South. In the New York Legis
lature, a bill has been introduced pre
scribing an “iron clad oath,” to be ap
plied to voters in thnt State—an oath
which is somewhat similar to the ope
proposed to be applied to the Southern
States. And in Congress, Mr. Stevens,
goaded to the highest pitch of indigna
tion by his rejection as United States
Senator by the Pennsylvania Legisla
ture, suggests that a republican form of
government be provided for that Stute.
Verily, the enemy is rushing to his own
destruction ; and if, like Sampson, they
tear down the pillars of the temple, like
Sampson, they will perish in the ruins.
They care not for North or South, for
East or West, lor Union or Peace —but
simply desire to gratify a perverted am
bition or a diabolical spirit of revenge.
In doing this, they care not for the
means that they use, or the ends that
they accomplish.
Not satisfied with applying test oaths
and Territorialization schemes to the
South, they threaten their own section
with these great evils. Having com
menced a wrong course and taken a
wronystep, they care not where it leads
to. The question now is, whether they
will be permitted to-go on to the fulfill
ment of these wild and baneful schemes?
We think not. The people of the North
may stand by in sileuce, and see the
South crushed to the very earth, and
trampled under the foot of the oppres
sor ; but when he seeks to crush them,
and to trample upon them, they will
make common cause with the South,
and, turning upon him, drive him to his
a i r, draw out his poisonous fangs, and
render him powerless and harmless.
They must do it. They must, in self
defence, see the South righted. If they
Gu not, they will be involved in a com
mon ruin, and suffer in their own sec
iiuu what we are compelled to suffer in
ours. Let them be wise iu time—ere it
oo late.

Among the acts passed by the Geor.
Legislature is one protecting the
ts of married women. The Mil
eville Recorder says that it provides
cII the property of the wife at the
ti me of her marriage, whether real or
personal, or ehoses in action, shall be
and remain the separate property of the
wife ; and that all property given to, in.

payment of any debt, default or con
tract of the husband.
The people of Atlanta are considera
bly agitated over an alleged deficit of
some $30,000 in their city treasury. —
Both papers call loudly for a speedy
public exhibit of all the facts, and the
Era politely advises and urges the
Mayor and Council to resign—a portion
of them having been connected with the
Board of last year in which the finances
got “mixed.”
The following ticket was elected on
Monday last, Mayor and Aldermen of
Marietta for the present year : Mayor,
A. N. Simpson; Aldermen, W. Root,
H. B. Wallace, J. U. gauges, W. W.
Carrel), J. M. Wilson, G. K. Gilbert.
The Corporators of the Cartersville &

Col. Warren Aiken is about to move
to Rome.
The Cartersville Eipress has seen a
rich piece of gold quartz mixed with
lead, from the Racoon Mines in that

Captain Luke Christie, of Savannah,

rendering amputation necessary.
—Life is an enigma. Wo are here
to day all activity and bustle, and to
morrow wo are gone. We die, but tho
world moves on as when we wore actors
on the stage. As we drop uway others
take our place and we are scarcely
missed. Thus, since the creation, man
breathes, moves, and dies. if there
were not a solution to this enigma, be
yond the coufines of the grave, how dull,
meagre, and unsatisfying would be the
few hours we pass on earth.
Bibb Simpson's Lnoal Kxpkkibm k.
—Many years ago the Legislature of
Teunessee passed an act to organise the
countv of McNairy, alia* Suake. At
that time the country embraced in the
limits of Snake was occupied by a sturdy
set of backwoodsmen, totally unac
quainted with courts, jails, etc. The
county assembled at the appointed site
for the purpose of coning logs, making
boards, etc., to build a court house and
jail. The only theme of daily conver
sation, when the men were assembled,
was the court, etc. Noue of them hsd
ever seen a court in session, ns yet de
veloped. Each one would give what his
idea was of a court, etc. None, how.
ever, were entirely satisfactory, until
Bill Simpson was called ou to give his
ideas, lie said he knew all about a
court —that he had had a lawsuit in
North Carolina. One of his neighbor's
hogs kept coming where he fed his hogs
until it got fat. Oue morning he got so
d—d mad that he shot the hog. He
thought it would uot do to throw it
away, so he cleaned and salted it. Shortly
after, his neighbor and a tnan came to
his house, examined the smoke house,
and took him to town and put him iu a
little office.
About three months after that this
man tunic an 1 took him up to a largo
room. A large man sat upon a high
bench ; a man was sitting at a desk ;
about a dozen fine dressed men sat in a
place that was paled around. The man
pnt him in a pen just behind them. He
then called in twelve men; they took
seats in a box in front of the fine dressed
men. The man that was writing gave
the twelve men a book and said some
thing about Bill Simpson and the State.
Then one of the five men said some
thing about Bill Simpson and the hog,
and he and another one of the fine
dressed men had the biggest quarrel ycu
ever beard. I thought they would fight
every minute, but they did’nt. It was
Bill Simpson and the hog, and the hog
and Bill Simpson, and sometimes Mr.
Simpson, but d—d seldom. Alter they
quit quarreling, the big man talked
awhile to the twelve men, and they went
out and stayed a short time. and. then
came back and said something to the
man at the desk. Then the man on the
bench said something to the man that
put me in ofiice, and he took me out and
lied me to a permission tree nnu com
raenced fighting me with a cowhide, and
ft made me so d—d mad that I shook all
the permissons off the tree. — Wine healer

Cheap Living in Texas.— A friend
writes as follows :
In C >lin county, Texas, pork sells for
six cents a pound, butter at twelve mid
a half cents, eggs at ten cents a dozen,
wheat one dollar a bushel, and Hour
four dollars a hundred weight. Corn is
rattled off at filly cents a bushel. These
rates are for specie, in that portion of
Texas one dollar of United States paper
currency is worth only two thirds of a
silver dollar. In Rusk county, mast
led pork readily brings six cents, corn
fed seven cents. There is an abuudant
supply of food in that region, particu
larly ol hog and hominy. East Texas
is, unquestionably, one of the best coun
tries iu the world for raising pork.
