Lore and Tragedy. The Sew York correspondent of the Charleston Sac*, says: *» He jests at sears that never felt a woand,'’ saos Shakspeare; he mil not jest long, for be most soon be wounded, sots Moultrie. It >* all very well for plain matter-offset people of the Grmd griad school to laugh at sentiment, to scoff at lore, to contend that it is all nonsense, and to quote the great poet in substantiation of the fact that men hare died and worms hare eaten theta, bat not for lore. Worms hare feasted upon men, and women too, who hare and ted wren from the romantic kind of lore that we read of in yellow covered novels; fact beats fieton, and the newspapers ol the day teem with tragic scenes from real life that throw the sensation novels into obscurity. Such a tragic scene baa just been enacted here. A highly ac complished young lady who held the position of forewoman in the female com posing room of the “World” office, and was also editor of the fashion department of the ‘•Sunday Times and Messenger” was murdered on last Saturday evening by her lover, one Thomas Burke, who immediately after the commission of the deed put the pistol to his forehead an 4 added the crime of suicide to that of murder. The unfortunate young women was a lady of irreproachable moral character, and of extraordinary mental acquitments. A letter of hers, which fell into the hands of the officers of justice, showed that there had been a time when she had lored Burke even with an intensity that could satisfy his jeal ous and passionate temperament. From some unknown cause, the lady's affec tions underwent a change, and she no longer regarded Burke with favor. The engagement was broken off, but Burke still perservered in his suit, and annoyed her with his attentions. On last Satur day evening, when the young lady left the World office and went to her board ing house, in Ninth avenue, Burke fol lowed her, and forced himself into her chamber, implored her to renew their matrimonial engagment. On her re fusal, the desperate man drew a revolver and shot her—once in the shoulder and once in the breast. At the second shot she fell and expired almost ioßnedistely. For a moment the wretched man stood spell bound and rooted to the spot, as he thought of the past and looked upon his dreadful work; then as he saw the bosom of her he had so madly loved ensan guined by the flowing life-stream that his murderous band bail let forth, he gazed upon the glassv eyes, where death had set his seal, and placing the muzzle of the pistol close to hie forehead, palled the trigger and sent his wretched soul to its awful account. Negro Education. —The New York Post says that, in the month of Novem ber tost, there were, in the State, ninety nine schools, of which forty three were supported by Northern societies, and fifty six—or more than half—by the freedtnen. There were dne hundred and thirteen teachers, es whom fifty seven were supported bj Northern so cieties, fifty six by the freedtnen. This was an increase over the preceding month of fifty one schools and fifty teachers. The treedmeu paid two thousand dollars in the month of No vember for the support of schools. The Superintendent was nnabie to make a fall report of the schools and teachers supported by the freed men, but he asserts that the actual results are even more satisfactory than the figures al ready given indicate. These freedtnen, assisted by a few white friends, have organized a State Educational Association, the officers of which reside at Augusta. One or more subordinate associations have already been organized in move than fifty coun ties. It to expected that in less' than a year, associations will be organized in each of the one hundred and thirty one counties in the State. Schools have been established by these subordinate associations, and are supported entirely by the colored people. Five subordi nate association? have been organized in the city of Augusta, and night schools have been opened. Each asso ciation has elected a President, Vice President; Secretary, Treasurer, and School Committee —all colored men. The School Committee establish the schools and employ and pay the teach ers, while the scholars pay the ex penses. A s tenor K or Maxiluas.—La Presse gives an Anecdote which conveys a pleasant impression of the Emperor Maximilian. An officer was taking a walking tour through the mountainous district ol Ifibl, and having lost his way, he went into a cottage to inquire the road. The poor woman to whom it belonged instantly desired her little boy to accompany the joung man to the turn of the road, and show him which rath be matt take. This service having b*n faithfully performed, tke officer gave the child money. The boy refused, remarking that military men never had money. “Ah!” said the young officer, “bow do yon know that T* “Because my brother is in the army, and he never baa any. My mother sold her last stack ol corn this very day iu order to send him so toe." The young man, touched by the story, returned to the cottage, met I leaving his parse with the poor woman, promised to protect her son. The officer was the Archduke Maximil ian. Cottar*!
