RUINS.
BT CAKKtB BKI.L UKCLAIfI.
I stood said (ho rums of ay childhood's
esrijr homo.
And wept to (in on whst wss ones s proud
sad lofty dome;
Thom wore so pictures on the wslis! all, sll
wss tilont there.
And, oh! within that ruined shriso IMt
my heart's despair!
Tho flowers my haud had planted there in
childhood’s days wore crushed,
The forms that I once loved to clasp were
mouldering in the dust!
The voices of the loved oneel alas! where,
where are they ?
Alone ! alone I stand withia my childhood's
homo to- dey.
The tree I loeed the best of all! it is no
longer here,
Thn footsteps that I listen for fall not upon
my ear;
The wine that I in childish sport twined
round the little porch
Has withered, with its roses sweet, beneath
Time’s ruthless touch !
I turned away! for, oh! I could not look
npon the sight,
And know that my cherished hopes had felt
a cruel blight.
Oh ! it was pitiful to gaze upon the ruins
there—
And yet the darkest of them ail was my own
heart's despair!
Again I turned away, and thought to seek
the school house, where
In days gone by, those merry romps my
schoolmates used to share;
I wandered to the place, but, oh! the old
school house was gone.
The teacher I had loved so well was sleeping
all alone!
Companions of those by-gone days ! I miss
each once loved face,
Bat on the “Wolls.of Memory" fair images
I trace!
I miss you as I stand amid the crumbling
rnrns hero;
Oh ! you would wehp with me, I know, in
all my heart’s despair !
God bless you all! I love you still, though
by-gone joys are o’er,
And I may never, never clasp the forms I
love once more:
Your homes are filled with happiness! think
sometimes of me there,
And pity her whose heart is bowed beneath
this dark despair!
I wandered to the little church! the dear
familiar spot
Through all the lapse of weary years my
soul had ne’er forgot!
-I paused and wept one* move within tho
graveyard’s silent shade,
W here two dear loved ones from our home
long years ago were laid!
I knelt beeide the grave and wept above the
broken stone!
Oh! it was bitter thna to feel myself so
much alona!
And I have wished a thousand times that I
were sleeping there—
Ah ! there, indeed, I would not feci this
weary heart’s despair 1
Wrecked! wrecked! the ocean tells no tale
of those who perished there,
In some lone heart, perchance, is heard the
deep wail of despair;
But, oh ! tho saddest wreck, perhaps, the
world has over seen
Is that which holds a wasted form and blighi
. ed heart within !
Oh! Bains! Raids! fearful is a wreck on
land or sea—
A lost, lost foal ! a broken shrine! crushed
flower, or blasted tree!
And jet to stand amid a pile of rains, black
and drear,
And feel the darkest of them all is jour own
heart’s despair!
Oh! ye fcavo seen the vessel wrecked upon
the stormy deep,
Perchance have wept o’er some loved one
the ocean rocked to sleep;
Perhaps o’er ruins each as these you may
have drop’t a tear,
Ak ! toon'l job we-p with me to-day, in all
my Hcnrt'e Despair f
Strikes. —The Boston Voice, the or
gan of the working-men, publishes a
lengthy editorial on the subject of
strikes, the tenor of which roaj be gath
ered from the following extract:
We are not going to say that strikes
are nccer to be resorted to; but we be
lieve that if trades unions come as near
to never as possible without reaching it,
they will evince th£ highest wisdom in
this matter. There is a point undoubt
edly beyond which “forbearance ceases
to be a virtue - ’ —a point of striking—for
life, for liberty, for wages; but strikes
are so apt to act like a kicking gun, and
ao nearly sure to cause ill-feeling be
tween employer and employee, and also
between fellow-workmen,that they should
never be decided upon without the most
careful deliberation, nor till alter all
other means have failed, aud they are
clearly seen to be a necessity.
