THURSDAY MORNING..... Jan. Sl/ISST

OUK WILLIS.
Fell oil l*« RattDAdd in Virginia, April <*,
18*3.
BY CARRIE BULL SINCLAIR.
"We will meet but we will miee him,
Thor* will be one vacant choir;
IVe will linger to carets him
When we breathe our eroning prayer.
At our fireside sad nod lonely
Often will the bosom swell,
At remeutbracoe of the story
How our noble Wfllie fell!”
Oh ! just when the voice of gladness
Wu filling our hearts with mirth,
And the shadows were growing brighter
Around our evening hearth ;
When we looked upon smiling faces,
And watched at the open door,
Why—why did the tidings reach us
That Willie would come no morel
Our hearts were light and joyous
As we listened to hear his tread,
For we knew not that ho was sleeping
Far off with the dreamless dead!
But still with a smiling welcome
We watched at the opon door:
One came—but, alas! he told us
Our Willie would come no more!
The smile on our lips grew silent,
And hushed each sound of mirth.
For, oh! there is gloom and sorrow
Around our evening hearth.
There were (no, and we waited for them—
Out came, but not tho other—
Oh ! God, I thank thee for giving back
The darling, only brother!
And, oh ! 1 tried to meet him
With a smiling welcome too;
But, ah ! the tears—tho bitter tears—
Hear Willie, they were for you!
Alas for the cherished idol,
We never will clasp him more,
Till we meet hint over the valley dark
By the light of the golden door!
'lwas a bitter night we parted,
And my heart throbbed so with paio;
But ho kissed away the tears and said—
“ Hush ! Wiliiowill come again !”
Ah ! me, they wore words of comfort,
But I knew 'twas a hope too bright;
For I felt that our last good-bye on
We had spoken that very night!
And when he turned to leave us,
I lingered still at the door,
At every footstep seemed to say—
He is going to come no more !
Oh! Willie! our household idol!
Our darling ! our pet! our pride!
llow many bright hopes have perished
With thee—how much joy has died!
Farewell! but I will not murmur!
But try to say, “Peaco, be still!”
To gather up strength and comfort,
And bow at God’s hoiy will.
Bat, oh ! I will miss thee, darling,
I will miss thee everywhere,
And every path thy feet hath trod,
To me will seem more dear !
And when the quiet moonlight
Looks down on the rippling wave,
I'll come—for I promised you I would—
And kneel beside your grave!
And when, from tho careless world I steal,
To kneel at that spot in prayer,
I know you’ll come from the spirit-land
To meet and bless me there!'
Oh! beautiful white-robed Angels!
O’er ibo form of our Willie bow ;
And smooth back the golden tresses
From o’er the snow white brow !
And the hands of the peaceful sleeper
Fold over the quiet breast,
Tl.es bear him, a spotless spirit,
With thee to a world of rest !
Oh! Willie! we’ll miss you, dnrliDg :
Sad, sad are the hearts at home,
For we look ia rain for the loved one,
Who nevermore will come !
But we l>!e.sj our noble Willie,
Who sleeps so far away;
Ue fills a soldier’s honored grave,
Wrapped in his suit of grey !
