I KNOW NOT WHY.
BY j, EVANS r.
I know not why, yot, oh ! 'tin true,
A <Urku*.'i >tonic upon lifo'c cky ;
A darkness terrible to view—
Presenting stem imagery,
Os eweet hope* that now buried ho;
'Neath this aching breast and lone —
Fit piaco—sits melancholy,
Kver telling in mournful tone,
Os joys that were, tho’ now forever flown.
I know not why, I know not why
My life is dark and dreary;
I know not why these shadows fly
Across my path uuweary.
Like frightful ghosts and dreary:
In earlier days my heart was light,
“Twas rilled with hope—but now ’fia
weary:
Gone arc all those visions bright,
And in my soul sits darkness stern and
night-
I know not why my life's a blank,
Neither why my sonl Is dark;
I once at Youth's pure fountains drank,
And, too, felt Ucligion’s spark j
But now, as ’twere, I’m in a bark
On ocean's depths, fast driven
By seething, rolling surges; hark !
That crash, my sails are riven,
And I am drifting—farthor still from
lioaven.
I know not why, I know not why
I wish e’on now my life was o’er;
I know I know not why
On me, alone, these feelings pour
Like vengeful bolts from Heaven’s store:
Ringing loud their funeral knell,
Terrible erios of “Nevermore !”
But, lo! a light—there hope doth dwell—
Then, oh! “I know not why,” farewell,
farewell!
For now I know ’tis God’s own hand
Directs these clouds upon mo bore,
When I neglect His just command,
Him to serve with faith aud fear,
That I may feel His presence near;
And tho’ His Throne’s above yon sky,
His love is with His children here;
When I displease Him clouds draw nigh
And teach mo plainly the reason why.
