Ah ! d-ir y'nng friend. I liulo thought
A few ■'hort year* ups
Wh«n Wet I met Ihre. young and lair,
With all of b»*n'y> glow,
Thi' l * > * on -timid eland lic.hls
This pun- white tuarbi* tomb,
And know that th-m art sleomuj; here
All withared iu Uiy blootn !
And yet I road the ha.lnwcd names
•>; wife and limit er dear.
And know u hush,ml's tears for thea
Have sadly fallen there!
If,,* rt tii - time since last we met —
How sad the changes, too,
For I ha»e wept o’er loved < ne* gone
From earth, y ling friend, w.th you.
One who so oft ha- clasped thy hand
in happy davs gone by.
I, lying with theses! of death
Forever ever on her eye !
Oh ! Ida, friend, stove last we met,
Sad farewells have been spoken,
And I have wept in bitterness
O’er many a love-link broken !
And here I meet thee, gently wrapt
In Death's unbroken sleep ;
And here, beside thy grave to-day,
I sadly pause to weep.
So young, so tair —tust cightecu years
Thy fleeting life did know.
And hearts far older in their cares
Weep now in bittor wue!
The fairest flowers were horn to fade
And wither in their bloom.
To brighten summer's rosy hours
And die in wintor'a gloom!
Eut, Ida, ah ! so much of love
With thee lies buried here :
But thou art happy—and in heaven
Thy angel form more fair !

New Aecei'taxce ok Moral Char
after.—During a brief term of court
belt! bv Judge Hall, at M.trtinsburg, Vn.,
several applications were made for iintu
uraiizalion papers. Among the appli
cants was a native of “Fadcrlanu." He
took with him a friend to prove his resi
dence in the country. Os this witness
the Judge asked :
“Do you know the applicant Mr.
“Yesh, I well knows him.”
“Is his moral character good?’’
“Oh, yesh, yesh, Shudge,he’s all right
lie votes mil us !”
The Judge could scarce repress a
stuile at the answer of this question, and
we think it too good to keep.
YVas He Bankrupt ?—A bankrupt
merchant returned to his home one
night, and said to his wife :
“My dear, I am ruined ; everything
we now own is in the bands of the
sheriff.”
After a moment's silence his noble
wife looked him calmly in the face, and
said :
“Will the sh riff sell yon ?”
“No.”
“Will he sell me
“No, no.”
“Then don't say we have lost every
thing. All that is most profitable to
us—manhood, womanhood, childhood.
Wo have but lost the result of onr in
dustry and skill. We can soon makean
other fortune, if our hearts and hands
are lelt us.”
Articles Wanted.— The Rural
Southerner hits off the fashionable airs
of the present day in the loliowing
style :
Wanted—An intended I ride who is
willing to commence housekeeping in
the same style in which her parents
began.
Twenty fashionable young ladies who
dare to be seen wielding a dust brush,
or darning their brothel's stockings, if
a gentleman should happen to make an
early morning call.
Ten independent young ladies, of
“good families,” who dare to wear their
Inst winter's bonnets to church on a
fine Sunday.
Fourteen young ladies, “who are
anybody,” who dare to be seen in the
street wearing shoes with soles thick
enough to keep their feet. warm.
Fifty young ladies, of sufficient age
“to go in company,” who dare confess
they have ever made a loaf of bread or
a pudiing.
—Mr. Janies Gordon Bennett, Jr., in
a burst of what is intended to represent
erushiui? generosity, but which looks very
like ostentatious egotism, lias offered his
yacht, the Henrietta, as a "itt to young
Prince Alfred. Considering the cer
tainty that it would not be accepted, and
that it was just as'good in tlie way of
glorification as if it were, Mr. Bennett
has proved ii i mself by the offer a worthy
scion of an illustrious sire. To place a
royal duke in a position of even hypo
thetical obligation without its costing
anything, must he pronounced an inge
nious stroke ; especially when it is re
membered that the son of nu English
sovereign can receive nothing without
more than compensating thegiver. We
advise My. Bennett to make a present
of the Herald establishment to Napo
leon 111. It would be an advertisement
equally as good as his son’s and quite as
inexpensive.— Round lalle.
Fashions. —Ths Fashions correspon
dent of the New York World, jvrites:
“The new fushioned walk ling-dress is
invariably composed of a doudle skirt,
the under one just long enough to escape
contact with the pavement, the upper
one varying in length with the style
and taste ol the wearer. The under
petticoat may he in folds at the edge, or
may he plainnna hammed in any fr.n
taslic style, it is frequently ol colored
merino or cashmere, the color adopted
repeated in the trimming ol the bonnet
or in the casaquc. Young persons are
permitted bright colored petticoats if they
always go out attended by their mamas
or a femme <le chambre. The upper
skirt is cut, I believe, in six pieces
straight in frontnud at the beck ; no folds
st the waist, ami almost no fullness at
the lower edge, which is-subject to n
thousand capricious variations; plain,
sculloped, pointed Greek and Koninu
patterns, and whnt not ; the edges and'
thereabout set off with either jet or rib
bon, or galloon, or iu fringe. The casaquc
is the covering most worn with this style
of dress, hut it is no longer eut in the
well known sack style. The peplmn
proper is straight in front and in the
hack and pointed at the side. Small
hoops are admitted under the wulkmg
ilress,

Oberlin, 0., on motion of Gen. Garfield,

mcMA^nics.
Kurincm opened quite active In the early part of
the week, hut the unfavorable weather tluring the
last three days hn& interfered with trad*' to a con
siderable extent, though a lienlthy feeling pervade*
tha market, and the prospect U favorable for an
active business. The improvement in Cotton and
the advance In GoM have Imparted a tone of gene
ral ftnunes* to the market, though we have no
material changes to report. Stocks in most branches
of trade are ample, without being excessive;
though we And Bacon in light supply, and Corn,
which wus accumulating early in the week, h m
been so freely taken up as to impart a firm tone to
the market- Though Bacon U scarce—save dry
salted meat, which is abundant and dull—-buyers
are generally holding off for supplies of new, and
prices are easier. Our dealers* are now beginning
to receive supplies from the West which have been
detained by the severe weather to which we have
referred in previous circulars, and some decline
may be looked for, especially in Bacon Trade in
Fertilisers is active, and would be much greater if
money facilities w ouUI Justify our dealers in ex
tending credits conditioned on the coming crop.
Our Prices C urrent ha\e been revised with care,
and with the remarks which follow, will afford a
correct statement of the prevailing prices at whole-
FINANt t>V la.
Ow mg to the inflammatory tone still manifest in
the action of Congress, and the scarcity of money,
Securities and Rank Notes are still depressed and
neglected, and we have few changes on previous
quotations to note. At the close of our last review
we quoted Gold at 1% to 137, and Silver at 128 to
132. During the week prices have advanced, and
we now’ quote as follows:
Gold, buying l 37
Gold, selling 1 4o
Silver, buying l 30
Silver, selling l 33
The Banks continue to check at par; thirty day

PROVISIONS.
Very little new meat has yet arrived, and the
market is quite bare. The demand, however, is
limited, and under the expectation of large receipts,
prices are easier. We quote: Shoulders, 13^(R14c.;
Backbone Sides, 15c.; Clear Ribbed Sides,
15*4c.; Clear Sides, Hams, 18 to 28c.
The impressiou prevails that when the market for
new bacon fairly opeus, prices will go lower. There
is considerable dry suited meat in the market,
which is dull at 14>* to ior Clear Ribbed
Sides.
FlX)Uß.—Stocks nre very light, and there is a
toady demand, without any material change in
prices- Northern Flour is still neglected on ac
count of its gcuernl inferiority, and trade is con
fined chiefly to Western and Baltimore brands, hiul
to our t ity Mills, which we are pleased to find are
resuming their old rank in public favor.
SUGAR.—We have no change to note in this
article. Stocks are equal to the demand, and
prices are firm and steady.
LARD—Is firm at previous quotations.
BUTTER.—The market is well supplied with
Northern and Western brands, and prices are linn.
Country Butter is in demand at 35 to 40 cents.
EGGS.—The receipts are large, and arrivals are
freely taken at 35 cents.
RICE.—The supply is hardly equal to the de
mand, and prices are higher. We quote 12i&14c.
1 fur good to prime Carolina.
OR-A-IN.
CORN.—The market has been active and steady
all the week. Receipts have been moderate, and
sales have been readily made at $1 50(2*1 55. Prime
Maryland White is scarcq, and would, we believe,
bring $1 60.
11VY.—The receipts have hardly been equal
to the demand, and prices are a shade higher. We
quote Northern, §2 50; Eastern, $2 75; Native,
§2 00(g,2 25.
SUNDRIES.
BAGGING.—There is no demand, and prices are
entirely nominal. It is a fact worthy of note, that
in the month of January there were but five bales
of Bagging shipped to all the Southern ports.
ROPE—AIso is entirely neglected.
DRUGS.—We have carefully revised and en
larged our list of Drugs, and afe plea? ed to find that
the enterprise displayed in this department of trade
is being appreciated by country dealers. *ihe
Drug houses of this City are unsurpassed by any
South, in the extent of their stocks and facilities
for supplying the trade.
DRY GOODS-—There is a manifest improvement
in the tone of the Dry Good® market, though owing
to the inclemency of the weather trade has been
only moderate.
SALT.—The supply is about equal to the demand,
which is light, and prices are easier. We quote
Liverpool, $2 50, with a downward tendency.
MOLASSES.—Stocks have increased, and the
demand is fair at Hie quotations given—to which
we refer.
FERTILIZERS.—Our market is well supplied
with a great variety of artificial and the
demand is quite active. This trade could be in
creased to almost an unlimited extent if money
facilities would allow a liberal system of credits.
TOBACCO.—There is a good deman-1 for low and
medium grades, and stocks are light: prices re
main without change, as reported in the table, to
which attention is directed.
WHISKEY.—There is a better feeling in the
market, with a fair demand, and our quotations
take a wide range, but are believed to be correct.
DOMESTICS.—'There is an active demand for
cotton goods, at full prices.
MACKEREL AND FISII—The supply is in ex
cess of the demand, and prices are easy.
POTATOES —Seed Potatoes are in active request,
and are readily taken at SGOO£iGSO per barrel.
Good Irish Potatoes for eating may be lmd at £5 00
(3 5 50.
COTTON.
We left the market dull, at the close of our last
report, at the following quotations: Middling. 31;
Strict Middling, 3134; Good Middling, 32c.
On Saturday, the market was firm, with light
offerings, and sales of 170 bales were reported.
Receipts, 300 bales.
On Monday, the market opened quiet, and im
proved toward the close, with sales of 102 bales—
quotations nominal. Receipts, 138 bales.
On Tuesday, there was an improvement in the
market, and 122 bales were sold at Saturday's quo
tations- Receipts, 200 bales.
On Wednesday, a better feeling was manifest*
with an active demand, but sales only reached 130
bales. Receipts, 222.
On Thursday, the market continued firm and
active, hut the offering stock was light, and only
150 bales were sold. Receipts, 245 bales.
On Friday, the market opened firm at 80@33Jic.
for Middling to Good Middling, but the unfavorable
report from Liverpool caused a depression toward
the close, and sales were made at a decline of fully
a half cent on the above figures. Sules, 230 bales.
Receipts, 2:34 bales.
The stock of Cotton in Augusta and Hamburg on
the -Ith fast., was 17,068 bales.
