I mood bcsid* A little mound,
Marked by »» humble .tone.
And reed the soldier'. epitaph.
In the one word—“ Unknown 1”
Not e’en a name to tell of him
Who slept to aweetly there, —
No name o'er which loved one could bend
To drop affection'• tear.
The only one who sleeps "Unknown,”
Among the many brave ;
“ Somebodg'e darling/' though, I know,
Sleeps in that soldier grave!
Perchance to some pooT mother’s heart
lie was the only joy !
Perhaps that mothor waited long
To welcome home her boy 1
Perhaps a gentle sister, too.
Prayed for him night and day,
And watched with anxious heart to greet
The loved one from the fray;
Or it may be some maid, whose love,
To him was yet more dear,
Is weeping now with grief for him
Who sloops so sweetly here !
Upon each little white slab here
Is traced sotae soldier’s name,
And proudly do wc love to tell
Their glorious deeds to Fame !
But, ah ! ’tie sad, indeed, to stand
Beside this bumble stone,
And read no name —and know that one
Is sleeping all “Unknown /”
To know that there ere loving hearts
Who’d giro their all to-day
To stood beside this graves where sleeps
Their soldier boy in grey !
But ’tis enough to know that he
For our dear country died—
And stranger bands can twine fair flowers
Above this spot in pride.
Ah 1 here arc many soldier graves—
Ho does not sleep alone!
And though no name of him is traced
Upon this simple stone —
There is a spotless scroll above !
And on that snowy page
Hath angel hands for thee, “Unknown,”
Recorded nume and age !
Augneia, da., Feb. 2d, 1367.
The Dress in the Black Crook. —A
New York correspondent of the Peters"
burg Index gives the following account
of the dress of the “ladies” in the cele
brated play of the Black Crook, which
has had such a famous run in New
York. He says:
The ballet troupe consists of better
looking young ladies than the ordinary
run of such troupes, and it is astonish
ing to see to what a degree of perfection
they have reduced the practice of econ
omy in dress. If Mrs. Eve could find
herself in Niblo’s, I think that she
would feel perfectly at home, and Mr.
Adam would not think of blushing at all
on account of his scantily supplied ward
robe.
“I don't exactly know how to describe
the costume, but it reminds me very
much of pictures that I used to see in
Mitchell's geography, when I was at
school, of ‘native Hottentots.’ It is a
mighty convenient costume for dancing.
You can't tread on her skirts to save
your life, and there is no danger of
being tripped up by crinoline as you go
round in the German, No collars or
cuffs to be mashed ; no sleeves to be
ripped ; in short, it is so close to nothing
that you are a long time finding out the
difference; and if you don't like my
description, just come on, buy two
tickets, and 1 will carry you to see it.”
Why Folks Read Locals. —People
read articles of local interest for rea
sons as opposite as man and wife- A.
reads‘about a light because he was
there and saw it. B. because he wasn't
there and didn’t; C. becasue he’d heard
about it, and 1). because he hadn’t;
while those who had a hand in it, want
to know how much of truth concerning
them the editor has deemed compatible
in its utterance, with a continuation of
his own earthly career. Ihe conscious
ness, too, that hundreds of others are
perusing the same article simultaneous
ly, and that it is, therefore, a subject cf
common thought and conversation,
doubtless adds to the zest with which
ordinary readers eagerly devour arti
cles that otherwise would have but a
dull perusal or no perusal at all.
Rests at Richmond. —The Rich
mond papers announce a heavy decline
in rents in that city ; for instance, one
of them says : The buildings on Cary
street, known as “Commercial Block,”
which rented last year for $5,000 each,
are now rented for $2,000 each. The
building lately occupied by the Na
tional Express Company, and for which
they paid $6,500 per annum, rented a
day or two since at auction for $1,650.
The buildings on Fifteenth street, which
rented in 1865 for $6,000, are now rent
ed for $1,200, and so on.
This indicates not distress, dull trade,
and want of confidence, but a gradual
return of the standard of legitimate
business.
—A sensation has lately been pro
duced in Paris by the disappearance of
an American lady from her residence in
Champs Elyses, leaving her children
■with the servants. She was a lady of
irreproachable character. Her husband
on hearing of her disappearance, em
barked from America to search for her,
but has not found her. He ascertained
that she was in the habit of going to a
certain convent, for the alleged purpose
of letting the children play in the
grounds. One day, after returning from
a drive to the convent, she left the house,
telling the servants she was going out
on business. It is asserted on the au
thority of the administration, that the
lady has not been the victim of any per
sonal assault.
—Tlioy are about cutting a canal in
California that will irrigate over a million
acres of waste land in several of the
counties of that State. The canal will
not only furuish a supply of water for
the land, hut will serve also as a high
way (or carrying the products of ie
laud to the San Francisco market. *

niauulacturing establishments. It has
fifty glass lactones and sixteen potteries,
forty-six iron foundries, tbirty-ene roll

every variety, the whole turning out an
annual product worth about one hundred
million dollars.
