God s blessing be with thee, Sweet Sister! and thou, my brother! Fashion’s and Costumes —The Home Journal says that “at a recent ball, given at Delmonico’s, a young and beautiful married lady appeared in one of the new fashioned bull dresses, which are now worn short, like the street dresses. The dress consisted of a pink silk underskirt, which just touched the top of the shoes, which were of pink kid, buttoned up over the ankle with white buttons. Over the pink silk was a shorter skirt, of white tulle, trimmed with pink satiji pipings. The hair was dressed very high, and ornamented with a wreath of wild roses, the centre of each rose con taining a diamond of great brilliancy. The dress was made by a Parisian dress maker, and it is needless to say, attrac ted a great deal of attention. Another very beautiful dress was a short skirt, of white tarietau, with a wide box plaiting on the bottom, and having an overskirt of blue satin, trimmed with pipings of white satin, which were studded through the centre with small pearl bends. The shoes were of blue satin, the same shade as the overskirt, and laced with a white cord and tassel. The gloves, which are now tjie fashion for evening wear, had a gauutlet of kid, which reached nearly to the elbow, and buttoned with a smail guilt button.” Bulls.—Nearly all the bulls of which we read are attributed to Irishmen. The prevailing impression—that only an Irishman can perpetrate a bull—we pro pose to submit some facts which cannot be disputed, and which history confirms: Nearly three thousand years ago, in Greece, Hieroeles noted down in the “Astela” many of the bulls which go the rounds of the newspapers now-a days attributed to Irishmen. He tells among others: O! the person who sat before a glass wi h closed eyes to see how he looked when asleep. Os the one who. having to cross a river, entered the boat on horseback, giving as his reasons for riding that he was in a great hurry. Os the one who declared that, after a narrow escape from drowning, he would never enter the water again till he had learned to swim. Os the man who, hearing that a raven would live two hundred years, bought one to try whether it was true. Os the one who, findiug that half a cask of wine was gone, looked over the top to find an opening, and being advised to look for a hole in the bottom, replied: ‘’Blockhead, do you not see that the deliciency is at the top, and not at the bottom.” Os the one who, meeting an acquain tance, said, “1 heard you were dead,” and receiving the reply, “But you see me alive,” answered, “I don’t know bow that may he ; you are a notorious liar, and my informer was a man of credit.” Os the one who. neglecting to pur chase hooks as a friend hail requested in a letter, and fearing that he might be offended, said to him when they next met: “My dear friend, I never got the letter you wrote me about the books.” Stamps.—The following letter ex plains itself; Office Internal Revenue, 1 Washington, January 10th, 1867. J Sir : I reply to your letter of the 14th instant, that a quit claim deed, when given as a release of a mortgage by the mortgagee to the the mortgager, is not liable to damp duly, as a convey ance ; but, if it contains covenants, may be subject as an agreement or contract. It is only upon conveyance of realty sold that a stamp duty is imposed. Ju the case stated by you, there is no sale, but a mere placing of the legal record title in the saute party who holds the’ cquitablo one. Very respectfully, T. Garland, Deputy Commissioner. —“1 will bet you a bottle of wine that yon will descend from that chair before I ask you twice.” “Done,” said the gentleman. ‘ Come down.” “I will not.” “Then stop till 1 ask you a sec olid lime.” The gentleman, having no desire to retain his position until that period, came (low n from the clmir, and itis opponent won the wager. “Sure,’ said Patrick, rubbing his head wilh delight at the prospect of a present from his employer, “1 always mane to do my duty.” “1 believe you,” replied his employer, “and therefore i make you a present of all you have stolen from me during the year.” “Tlmnk yer honor,” replied Pat; “and may all your friends and acquaintances trate you as liberally.
