<J,|f pilL» |rcss. City Printer— Official Paper I.ARCEST CITY CIRCUIATIOX SATURDAY MORNING Feb. I*. H»#7 [From the Atlanta Era ] THE DEVIL AND CUPID. A Ltytud /or St. »«/««(•«. ||T «. K. WATSOJT. The devil. out walking one very fine day, !Stuin|H-a along by a brook which dashed through a meadow, Where, drowsed by the lauaical, mumuring OMho ripples, young Loro lay aeleep in the ehadow, Slretrbed oat at Dill lougth In a lily e wbito chalice. Where he slept like a king in a fairy gemmed palace. - Ills qilirer was bursting with arrows jus made, His bow hung near by on a honey flower sUmfen ; And visions of triumph exnltingly played O’er his face as he dreamed of some lan guishing Damon : And be laughed in his sleep, till one glossy winged sparrow Nearly woke, thinking Cupid hod called for an arrow. As sly as a fox that would throttle a goose. As coy as a maid with her lovers around her, Nick equeeied from the poppy a drop of its juice And sprinkled Lovo’s eye-lids to make him sleep sounder. Then, smiliug to soe the gay archer so stupid, Proceeded to play the—himself—with Dan Cupid. He examined the bow with its gossamer string Which both halves of the world had put in a shiver, -And twanged the frail chord, just to hear how 'twouid ring. Then took from the grass the half-burst ing quiver, And—knowiug who did it, it is not sur prising— Gave half of the arrows a brimstone bap tising. And erer since then a sad havoc is made When Cupid goes out lor a summer day’s shooting. Never dreaming at all what a trick has been played On him and the world by the dovil's free booting. For half of his arrows are missiles of terror, And produce, without fail, unaccountable error. Now, no longer, alas ! is it truthfully said That matches are made in the circles of Heaven, To a very largo portion, less happily made, Avery strong flavor of briuntoue is given. And, true to the nature of Lucifer matches, They all arc continually coming to scratches. PICTURES OF THE LATE Bisliop Elliott, WITH HIS EPISCOPAL ROBES, OR IN ORDI NARY ATTIRE, NOW READY! This Stove we have been selling for six years past, in every case with PERFECT SATISFACTION to the buyer, and in beauty of design perfect adaptation to all the requirements of a PERFECT AND COMPLETE COOK STOVE, it stands to-day without a rival, as an inspection will convince the most careful exam iner. Among our other Cook Stoves we enumerate the “QUEEN OF THE SOUTH,” “MARION,” “HARVEST QUEEN,” “RED JACKET,” Etc., Etc. All these are FIRST CLASS STOVES, well known throughout Georgia and South Carolina, we have nlic> a large variety of medium and second class goods in this line, enumerated 10 1 WBLL > but lighter weight and Jess expensive than those HOUSE FURNISHING GOODS.—Our stock in this department is so LARGE and varied, so woll known during our loDg existence here, consisting of PLAIN, PLANISHED, AND JAPANNED TINWARE. In this branch of our business we promise NOTHING NEW. That same punctuality and care for details that has been a well known characteristic of this House in times past will be rigidly observed and continued. Our facilities and way of doing things in this connection arc pretty well known. We GUARANTEE, for any REASONABLE TIME, all work done by us, and we are pleased to find, as our rapidly increasing pntronuge in this diioetion abun dantly attests, that the public are beginning to appreciate this guarantee, and to find that it means JUST WHAT IT CARRIES ON ITS FACE WITHOUT DISCOUNT.
