THE ZEPHYR.
7V» "Atur Kjo."
BT “sen ROBA.”
WM t Zaphyr, thou »rt hereanc* mow,
Mt g«utU currier dor# t
The bearer of th»t olive branch,
The oflering of hie low.
And thou ait swillcr, swifter far
Than bird on rapid wing;
And awoeter than the violet’*breath
Tho token whioh you bring.
Ah ! gentle Zephyr! though yon »**m
A* barmleaa aa a dove,
You're stolen Cupid’s tiny wings—
The little god of Lore !
And then you slyly robbed him
Os two shining little dart*,
And tent tho swift winged arrows then
To rankle in two hearts 1
Sweet Zephyr, if you only knew
The mischief you have dono !
And yet, you cunning thing, I knew
Your work is just begun.
Qod bless you, little Zephyr, though,
For all you’re whisperod me ;
And bearing him eo faithfully
Bach message sent by thee.
Then Zephyr, go and bear to him
This message for mo now ;
Tell him bow sweetly you hare soothed
The tercr from my brow.
Tell him. sweet Zephyr, that his lore
Robs lift) of all its pains—
Go, and I’ll watch, sweet Zephyr, till
l'ou eomo to me again.
And, gentle Zephyr, when you go,
Breathe softly in his ear;
Tell him each thought and word of his
To me is very dear.
Tell him, far brighter than the stars
That dock the arch above, •
Is this fair rainbow of my hapo,
The promise of bis love.
Tell him my soul hns holy thoughts
That none may ever hear,
Save Him to whom I breathe his name
In every hallowed prayer.
Ob ! bear him, from my fevered lips,
Teil him he is my life—my love !
My joy—my hope and bliss !
And now, sweet Zephyr, fly to him—
Farewell a little while !
Ah ! when you come again you’ll bring
To me bis sweetest smile.
Ge, then, dear little messenger,
My faithful carrier dove !
He's watching now for you to come
And bear him back my love !
Don't be Extravagant. —ls the poor
house has any terrors for yon never buy
what you don’t need. Before yon pay
three cents for a jewsharp, my boy,
ascertain whether you cannot make just
as pleasant a noise by whistling for
which nature furnishes the machinery,
and before you pay seventy-five dollars,
for a coat, young man, find out whether
your lady would be just as glad to see
you in one that cost half the money. If
she would not, let her crack her own
hazelnuts and, buy her own clothes.
When you see a man spending two or
three dollars a week foolishly, the chan
ces are five to one that he'll live long
enough to know how many cents there
is in a dollar; if he don’t he’s pretty
sure to bequeath that privilege to his
widow. When a man asks you to buy
that for which you have no use, no mat
ter how cheap, don’t say yes until you
are sure that some one else wants it in
advance. Money burns in some folks’
pockets, and makes such a big hole that
everything that it put in drops through
past findiug.
Concession' to the Jews in Russia.—
The Russian Government has made
another step in advance. It has par
tially thrown open to the Jews two im
portant towns formerly closed ngainst
them. Jewish merchants of the second
and third guild may now settle at Sebas
topol and Nikalaieff, trade there, and
even acquire real estate. A still greater
boon to the Jews, and one which has
also a political significance, is the offer
made by the Russian Government to the
Jews of Bokhara and other central
Asiatic countries to take them under its
protection. The offer, it is said, has
been eagerly accepted by them, as they
were fearfully oppressed by the Moham
medan rulers aud population of those
countries. „
A Happy Rejoinder. —At Oxford,
some twenty years ago, a tutor of one
of the colleges limped in his walk. Stop
ping one day last summer at a railway
station, he was accosted by a well known
polili iin, who recognized him, and
asked if he was not the chaplain oi the
College at such a time, naming the year.
The doctor replied that he was. “I was
there.” said his interrogator, “and I
knew you by your limp.” “Well,” said
the doctor, “it seems that my limping
mnde r a deeper impression on you than
my preaching.” “Ah, doctor,” was the
reply, with ready wit, “it is the highest
compliment we can pay a minister to
say that be is known by his walk rather
than by his conversation.”
Pursuit of Pleasure. —We smile at
the ignorance of the savage who cuts
down the tree in order to reach its fruit;
but the fact is, that a blunderer of this
description is made by every person
who is over eager and impatient in the
pursuit of pleasure. 'J'o such the pre
sent moment is everything, and the
future is nothing; he borrows, therefore,
from thirduture at a most ruinous and
ususurious interest; and the eoiisequnce
is that he finds the tone of his best feel
ings impaired, his selfrespect dimin
ished, his health of mina and body
destroyed, and life reduced to its very
dregs, at a time when, humanly speak
ing, the greater portion of its comforts
should be still before him.
Who Makes the Iro.v.— ln 1865, the
State of Maine produced eighty four
tons of nig iron; New Hampshire, -174
tons; Slassachusetts, 10,851 tons; Con
necticut, 9,278 tons; New York, 8C.608
tons; New Jersey, 23,481 tons; Penn-'
sylvania, 405,473 tons ; Maryland,

thus produced considerably more pig
iron last year than the other States of
the Union all put together.
—-The mysterious mission of Mr. F.
W. Seward is now stated to have hoeu
die purchase of commercial privileges
in St. Domingo, and is said to have
failed through the incoinpeteney of the
agent to whom the negotiation was en
trusted—a man named Smith.
—According to some statistics re
cently published in a French paper,
there iB one murder committed in Eng
land for every 178,000 inhabitants ;
in Holland for every 183,080 in Prus
sia for every 100,000; in Austria for
every 77,000 ; in Spain for every 4,113,
