to‘the company that the General would
not be able to complete the contracts as

the enterprise could not but prove a
magnificent failure. An arrangement
was made hv which he retired, or sur

It we may believe the newspapers
from oyer the Rhine, Prussia will make
a good show at the Agricultural Exhibi
tion at Biilancourt, as may be judged
br the following :
One day a Prussian Geaeral, one of
the old school, was reviewing a regiment
of the laudwehr at Cologne. As he
pasted one of the companies of the Sec
ond Bittalion be suddenly stepped,
while bis eye glittered with intense sat
isfaction.
“A fine soldier,” said he, pointing out
to the officers accompanying him a man
of great height and soldierly appearance.
“Asplendid soldier!" and at the same
time he stepped up to the fine fellow,
upon whose broad breast glittered a
medal.
“Well, comrade,” said he, ‘‘you have
been a long time in the army?"
“Twelve veurs, General.”
“I see that you have been a brave
suidii-r, and that you have won a
medal ?"'
‘‘Yes. General."
"Was it in Bohemia you gained it?'’
“1 was uever there. General.” •
"Perhaps in Schleswig Holstein

“Well, then in Hanover?”
“N at t!.. ; re. General.”
"Where in tiie thunder did you get it,
then ?"

The Third IH-grei.
Many of our readers will appreciate
the following legend of the Third—or
Master Mason's —Degree, which we
take from a Masonic paper :
"she legend, as it is culled, of the
Master Masons, is one ol the most
touching: and beautiful in the great
drama of life. Founded, as it is, upon
the mysteries and ceremonies of the
aa-ient Egyptians, it iias come down to
was the very embodiment and sub
stance of Masonry. It is the impres
s's exemplification ot the birth,
the life, the duties, the death, and
rtsurreetion,of man. It stamps upon
the intelligent Mason the sublime doc
trine of the immortality of the soul ;
ad it was a wise provision of all
Grand Lodges that that Degree should
never be given in part only, but should
be completed at every undertaking.
r “To omit, this legend is to omit the
Degree itself, and tor its omission the
ordinary excuse, not even the ignorance
of the master, who may not have the
t-ilent or industry to learn it, is not
; -fficient. i iiis legend is the grand
landmark, the unfailing beacon of
Masonic centuries. It is never changed ;
'* W 'H admit of no removal, for it is the
true point of the universal Brotherhood.
It conveys thought, and furnishes food
for the reflective mind down to the
grave, anil as a simple drama, stands
unequalled beside any ol the produc
tions ol genius. No Mason ever par
ticipated in and forgot it ; he felt its
moral upon his soul, as though it were
Mouth of Divinity, and when properly
understood, it inspire a solemnity
tccond only to the scene of death.”

<B@“ A YOUNG LADY RETURN
-ING to her. country home, after a sojourn
of a few months in the city, was hardly
recognised b. her friends. In place of a
course, rustic, flushed face, she had a soft
ruby complexion of almost marble smooth
ness, anil instead of twenty three she really
appeared but eighteen. Upon inquiry as
to the cause of so great a change, she plainly
told them that she used the CIRCASSIAN
BALM, and considered it an invaluable
acquisition to any Lady's toilet. By its use
any lady or geui Vinao can improve their
personal appearance an hundred fold. It is
simple in its combination, as Nature herself
is simple, yet unsurpassed in its efficacy in
drawing impurities from, also healing,
cleansing, and beautifying the skin and
complexion. By its direct, action on the
euticle it draws from it ail its impurities,
kindly healing the same, and leaving the
surface as Nature intended it should be,
clear, soft, smooth, and beautiful. Price

made by the great astrologist,
Madame H. A. Pirrigo.
?be reveals secrets no mortal ever knew.
• v he restores to happiness those who, from
doleful events, catastrophes, crosses in love,
loss of relations and friends, loss of money,
etc., have become despondent. She brings
together those long separated, gives infor

restores lost or stolen property, tells you the
business you are best qualified to pursue
and in what you will be most successful,
causes speedy marriages arid tells you the
very day you will marry, gives you the
name, likeness, and characteristics of tbe
person. She reads your very thoughts, and
by her almost supernatural powers, unveils
the dark and hidden mysteries of tbe future.
From the stars we see in the firmament—
the melific stars that overcome or predomi

and positions of tbe planets and the fixed
stars in the heavens at the time of birth,
she deduces the future destiny of man. Fail

I REG LEAVE TO CALL THE ATTEN

Steam Engine, which is cheaper, lighter,
less intricate, occupies less space, consumes
less fuel than any other engiue, aud is
superior in every other way, it being in
fact a double cut off Engine, without the
friction of a double set of valves with their
multiform attachments, and for it* superior
merits w.»* awarded the gold medal at the
Maryland Institute Fair, in October, 1566,
over all other engines. This invention,
therefore, forms tbo most radical
and entire change in steam engines
which has occurred since the day** of
Watts, being durable, accurate, and econ

comparison with the past, and at far less
original cost than ever before attained.
