ford at least the comforting assurance, that one person believes him innocent—and if even guilty that one heart will fondly turn to him still. The other woman scorned, mid sacrificing her hus band’s character, at the shrine of revenge ! Oh woman—woman, whc can comprehend thee f To-morrow is the futal day for a great many at the Custom House, who will receive their pay for the last time. An order for the discharge „f still more has been recoivod from Washing- toil. It has boon doubted by some persons that a man has legal right of property invested in a valuable dog, but one of our Courts has just settled it. A dog was lost or stolen, and found in the possession of a party who refused to de liver it up, unless the owner paid the charges. He was ordered to produce the dog in the ward Court, in which he was ed, suthe animal identi fied. and tho Court ordered that it be given up, and the party who detained it to pay the costs of all the proceedings. A move has at length been made in behalf of the disabled members of the New York Vol unteers who fought in Mexico, who I am ashamed to say have been neglected in a most disgraceful manner while money and sympathy have been lavished upon Hungarian refugees, because they nobly defended their liberties and their homes, which they had been dastardly cowards not 10 have done. A Concert ts to bo given on Saturday night at the Tabernacle, to raise a fund for the Volunteers, and a Ball will be given early next month for the same pur pose. Three or four particular scumps were arrest ed yesterday, and I hope may be properly punished. The party has been in the habit of levying contributions on thehumane, in practice that thev were for the benefit, of a disabled fire man. Tliebusinesswas a very profitable one.— Two others, were in the practice of calling on newly-arrived German emigrants, one were ing a star like a policeman, and threatening to prefer a criminal charge unless they purchased their silence. In this way three follows have been making quite a nice living, but yesterday they went to a little fellow named Peiller, whose suspicions being excited he gave them $fi> and then gave them into custody. There are some odd ways, of getting a living in this city. No news of the Empire City from Cliagres yet. No news of importance stiring to-day. CIIARLEMAC. Turner’s Compound Fluid Extract of Con- yv.n and Htlllingln. This preparation is a highly Concentrated Ex tract, containing all the Active Medicinal Prop erties of the Conyza, (commonly known ns Black Root,) and the Stillingin, 01 Queen's Delight. These plants have been long since used umong our Southern Negroes and in empyricalpractice, with the happiest results, in cases of Chornic Rheumatism, Ulcers of long standing, and Sec ondary Syphilis. It is much superior to any pre parations of Sarsaparilla as an alterative, being more active and prompt in its operation on the system. These facts have induced the subscrib ers to present to the attention of Physicians a preparation prepared according to strict Chemi cal and Pnrmaceutical science, devoid of ail the feculent and inert parts of the roots, not doubt ing that it will supersede the unscientific and crude preparations hitherto vised. Price—$1 per bottle, or six bottles for $5. Prepared and sold bv TURNER & ODEN, Monument Square, savannah, Ga. nov 6 CONCERT! To be diawn at Savannah, Ga., on Tuesduy, Gebruary 5th, 1850. . W. Maury & Co., Managers. JCfP See first page. Rev. Mk. Stockton. A Church, without a Creed—The Presbyterian of the West says: “We understand that this gentleman, late pastor of the Reformed Methodist Church in Cincinnati, has resigned his charge, and pro poses to establish a now no-creed church. With a view to this, he last Sabbath delivered his first lecture in the Unitarian Church. We have not learned what are to be the precise features of this new church. During the lust wTittSPSTr. Stockton preached several discours es, in which he held, that there is a middle place, called Paradise,'in which they better class of heathens, and all who, having some grace, die in a state of imperfect sanctification, are placed; that, under the ministry of saints and angels, they may be fitted for heaven. We presume his present enterprise has reference to these views.” Dead Letter Office.— : A correspondent of the Baltimore Sun say3:— Some idea of the labor performed in the dead letter branch of the General Post-office may be formed from the following :—Within a few weeks about 1,600 letters, exclusively de rivable from two sources, have been received, examined, re-transmitted to as many postmas ters, by whom they were restored to the writers; receipts returned and duly registered. Each of these letters contained from one to three dollars. A portion was intended for the pur- chas of a gold seeker’s humbug', the remain der for a certain diabolical treatise—both of which concerns happened to explode before the proprietors got Hold of this money. J. IS. CUB1IEDGE, Printer of the Daily Morning News, re spectfully informs his friends and the public, tfiat having made extensive additions to his well selected assortment of printing materials, he is prepared to execute with despatch every variety of BOOK and JOB PRINTING, and on terms as reasonable as those of any other establishment in the South. It is stated the new crop from the lowlar.de will be early to hand, but it is to be feared that high prices will bring it to market before it is properly prepared for ehipments, hence there will be much risk in shipping it.
