ARRIVAL OF THE ALABAMA AT NEW
* ORLEANS.
LATEST FROM CALIFORNIA
Organization of the State Government
Great Fire at San Franoiaco.
New*Orlea.N3, Feb. 4.
The Alabama brings dates to the 31st Decem
ber. The Assembly met on the 17 December,
and Mr. Burnette was inaugurated ns Govern
or. On the 21st Dec. Lieut. Col. Fremont and
M. Gwin were elected U. S. Senators by the
Legislature.
The mining operations in California had been
almost suspended, in conseqncnce of rain and
snow. •
A tremendous conflagration occurred at San
Francisco on the 24th Dec., which destroyed a
large portion of the city- The loss is estimat
ed at one and a half million of dollars.
The steam ship Ch 'rokee arrived at Chagres
on the 25th Dec. The Empire City left for
New York on the 27th.
The steamers Chesapenke and Panama from
New York had arrived.
The Constitution was adopted by a vote of
12,000, against 800.
ISP The Washington correspondent of the
Baltimore Clipper says.—The Union is safe.
Northern members are backing out from the
Proviso. About twenty-three northern members,
mostly Whigs, united with the southern mem
bers in laying Mr. Root’s resolution on the table.
This will quiet the matter in the House.
The river (siivs the N. O. Picayune on Thurs
day,) continues to rise rapidly at points within
the State, ubove the city. Bayou S ira isnl-
rendy partially submerg d, and the scenes of
last season maybe looked for again.

P ROFESSOR BARRY’S TRI-
COl’HEROUS, or MEDICATED COM
POUND—Infallible for renewing, invigorating,
nnd beautifying the HAIR, removing Scurf,
Dandruff, and all affections of the Scalp, and
curing eruptions on the Skin, Diseases of the
Glands, Musclqsand Integuments, and reliev
ing Stings, Cuts, Bruises, Sprains, &c. &c.—
With this Preparation, “there is no such word
as fail.” The first journal in America, medi
cal men of the highest eminence, prominent citi
zens of all professions, and ladies who have used
it for years, in their dressing rooms and nur
series, admit with one accord, that, for impart
ing vigor, gloss, luxuriance and curl to.the hair
eradicating scurf nnd dandruff, healing wounds
curing contusions, sprains, stings, &c., and re
lieving diseases of the skin, the glands, and the
muscles, it has no equal among the multitude
of compounds advertised ia the public, prints,
or used in private practice. In, cheapness as
wqJI as efficacy, Barry’s Tricopherous is un
rivalled. The immense cash sales of the arti
cle. have enabled tho inventor to supply it at
retail, at 25 cents per bottle, which is from fifty
to one hundred per cent less, than the price of
any other preparation for the hair now in use.
The scientific treatise on the hair and the skin
(embracing valuable directions for the culture
and preservaiion ot Nature’s choicest orna
ment,) in which each buttle is enclosed, is
alone worth the money.
The affinity between the membranes which
constitue the skin,-and the hair which draws its
sustenance from this triple envelope, is very
close All diseases of the hair originate in the
skin of the head- If the pores of the scalp
are clogged, or if the blood and other fluids do
not circulate freely through the small vessels
which feed the roots with moisture, and im-
partlifeto tho fibres, the result is scurf, dand-
iiiff, shedding of their hair, grayness, dryness,
and harshness of the ligaments, and entire
baldness, as the case may be. Stimulate the
skin to healthful action with the Tricopherous,
nnd the torpid vessels, recovering their activity,
will annihilate the disease. In all affections of
the skin, and of .the substrata of muscles and
Integuments, the process and the effect are the
same. It is upon the skin, the muscular fibres,
and the glands, that the Tricopherous has its
specific action, and in all affections and injuries
of these organs, it is a sovereign remedy.
