a "j brought crowds to ’the Court room. Yes terday there was a throng of lawyers and mem bers to hear Webster, who closed the argu ment, on the part of Shultz. Webster's effort was powerful. He did not speak his full two bouts, to which arguments are limited. One of the Justices remarked to me lust night, that it was one of Webster’s most successful efforts. A Georgian who was of the circle remarked that, without giving an opinion in the presence ofoneoftho Court, ho would say that, if the case was before him, ho would dispose of it very quickly. Without any inquiry, I know very well what this meant, for it so happened’ that Iliad heard severnl Georgians express a verv decided opinion on tho snljcct, and in favor of the Bank. I havo heard the matter discussed by those who say that its ori-^ gin was antecedent to their professional or le gal existence, but they were all of tho same opinion. What tho opinion of the Court will be is another mater. UNION. California Items.—We find in the New Or- eans Crescent some interesting items of news prepared by a passenger by the Alabama. Mrs. Fremont was at Panama, so ill of fever that she was expected to die. The announcement of the death of Captain Tobin was not believed at San Francisco. The U. S. flag ship Savannah was lying with in six miles of San Francisco. The Falmouth and St. Mary's weie also there. The bay of San Francisco contained some three hundred sail of vessels, of which some two hundred are idle and without crpws.—Pre vious to the Oregon’s leaving labor was reduced n value, and especially seamen’s wages. Sea men were shipping for voyages to the Sand- •wich Islands at nominal wages—not over $30 per month; to Panama, $20 to $30; to Oregon, $75. This change is owing to the accession of uborers constantly arriving, and the continued ains which prevent out-door labor to a great extent. The town council of San Francisco has had three large sales of town lots, which have re sized upwards of one million of dollars, and were tc have another sale on the 3d of Jan uary. They have opened a City Hospital, and ore making great improvements on the streets. Kents continued high and buildings of e very kind, style and condition, are being erected. Georgetown Convent.—At the Convent of he Visitation, on the morning of the 7(h in- itunt, Sister Mary Dolores Marshall, of Ports mouth, Va.; Sister Mary Maurice Koster, of harleston, S. C., Sister Mary Rosalia Oflit of Georgetown, made their solemn profession of he three religious vows. On the same occa- lion, Sister M. Clementina Luchorn, of Cum- lerland, Md., and Mary Clotilda Fitman, of Pennsylvania, were professed as Out Sisters. The Most Reverend Dr Samuel Eccleston, of Baltimore, presiding. Imdiana.—The Governor of Indiana has np- ointed Mr. Trotter to.procure ablock of marble I'thrtr Stare for the 'Washington National Mon iment, and to engrave the following noble sen- iments upon it—“Indiana knows no North, no iouth, nothing but the Union." The Victoria (Texas) Advocate of tho I8th fan. says that the cholera hns appeared among he recruits belonging to the "8th Regiment U 1. Infantry, recently arrived at that place for 'Jew Orleans, and that sixteen have died, 'lie troops had taken up the like of march for an Antonio, the Cholora having abated. Naval Court Martial.—A precept for a bourt Martial on Commodore Cooper has been Issued. Commodore Stewart, Morris Read, Bhubrick, Perry and Kearney, with Captains Stringer, McKever and others, to make up the (lumber of thirteen, have been ordered on the lourt, which is to assemble in New-York on |fro 14th inst. The charge is for quitting the African station without being regularly rcliov- fed- DRAWS TO-MORROW. CONSIGNEES PER CENTRAL RAIL ROAD.
