f fanaticism and demngngnehfn, ami nrp now ising to arrest it. In this sigh, I see ultimate armony. If there is truth in wine, and all experience _g proxed that there is,then I must believe that "here is more danger ahead thnn ever I had reamt of, in regard to this subject: furl have card things to-night, us to tho state of this uestion, which ularm me. Men have told me hat tho storm was coming, and thut they lould not see how it was to be averted — en who know. Mr. Calhoun will probably follow Mr. Ber gen on Wednesday. He lias not yet resumed tis scat in the Sonato, but ho will briefly ex cess his views, if able to come to the Senate in mat day. Southern Senators tell me that Dr. Gwin, vho is now here, will exert grout and salutary nfluence *m these questions, lending his aid o a compromise. He is a man of some tact ; nd address. We have known hipi here in brmer times. Lowei.l Factohy Girl Murdered.—The >ody of a young girl named Caroline Adams, found on the 11th itstant, in the river at Lawrence, sewed up to a sack. The account tates that hef throat had been cut almost from lar to ear and a handkerchief tied over her nouth. Various conflicting accounts have bpen pub- ished in tho Boston papers, concerning this loung woman and her death. ' In some she is ipokejp of as bearing a had character—inoth- srs as exemplary. All descirbe her as beauti ful. It is ascertained that she was in a way to ecomc a mother, and a presumption has been brown out that her death was caused by a riminal attempt to avert that consummation. A later account states that Dr. M. Clark of awrcnce, has been arrested on the charge of aving murdered Miss Adams. His wife, who s supposed to liavo been his accomplice, is. Iso under arrest. The account says: It is now supposed that tho deceased, while ndergoing an operation, made outcries, and hat, fearing a discovery, a fold of cloth was ut over her mouth, and that finally they wire bliged to kill her. The young man Taylor, e lover of the deceased, testified for Govern- ent before the coroner’s Jury. Dr Clark is 0years old, and has heretofore been aphysi- inn at Georgetown, Mass.— Tribune, Arraignment or Professor Webster.— fhis legal ceremony was performed on Satur- Say, in the Supreme Judicial Court at Boston, the accused responded "not guilty” in a firm He announced that Mr. S h er and udgn Merrick was his counsel, who, being in Eouit, expressed a deeifte to have the trial Dmmenced gs soon a* possible. Tuesday, > 9th of March, was assigned by the Court h theyday for trial. .TheJournal says: j The prisoner, during the reading of the Erst part of the indictment, manifested conrid- lrable emotion, evidently making an effort to land perfectly firm. In reading the first count f the indictment, where it describes the mail er of inflicting the mortal wounds, just as the jlerU pronounced the words "with a certain nife which he then and there in ids right and had and held,” &c., the prisoner let liis Ight hand fall and rest upon the rai ing in front him, where he remained until the reading ■as finished U. S. Supreme Court.—The Supreme Court have ordered an. adjournment from the 1st of March to the first Monday of April. The sossion will, then continue until the 1st of June. Hereafter printed arguments will be received during the first ten days of the term.' The Hermann.—This ocean steamer is now ready to resume her voyage and will sail fro m N.
