Mr. Han neuan.—TWNow York Globe con-
n ,diets the report ror.Aitjy put incirculation
dmrging our late Minister'to Berlin withintem-
ieranco. The editor says, the whole story is
lttcrly without foundation, and adds, Mr. Han-
legan never tasted a <irnp of ardent spirits due
ng his whole residence in Europe, at.d his con
duct was of the most amiable and exomplaty
lharmCter under all circumstances. The stories,
.heifcfm-e, of the letter-writer in question are
nosi cruel as well os unjust, and were no doubt
; ho manufacture of some personal ill-feeling
.nd malignity.
Strike and Riot.—A party of laborers in
neidu County N. Y. on tbe canal yesterday,
truck for an advance of pay, and went in a
ody down the canal, driving all whom they
et from work—about 400 were driven off.
he ham of one of the contractors was fired by
lie rioters, consuming 10 valuable horses, snd
large quantity of oats and tools.
Melancholy Termination of a Wed-
Ping.—Miss Bridget Lynch, who had acted as
bridesmaid at the wedding of a friend at n
boarding house in Phin. on Sunday evening,
was fatally burned by the explosion of a cam-
pheno lamplwhile going upstairs, accompanied-
by the bride, to retire. H'rlirht dress was in
a full blaze at once; she ran down stairs in her
freight, and her appearance in a sheet of llame
tartled the company below. The smew being
loose, the fluid of the lamp when it was tilted
ame in contact with , the burner, and thus
aused the catastrophe.
Miss Lynch died on Tuesday night.
From tlce Cape of Good Hope.—The barque
Arthur Pickering arrived lit Bos'on on the 13th
inst. She brings dotes from the Cape of Good
Hope to the 26tli December.
A fierce contest was still continued between
the people and the government, hut at last ac
counts the latter had so far triumphed, ii
consequence of the trators who furnished til
authorities with supplies, that it was supposed
the former would be compelled to succumb.
At Cape Town the excitement was.very great
and alt kinds of business had been complete
ly paralyzed. Many of the merchants had de-
;ermined to leave the place if convicts wen 1
continued to be la ided.
Michel, the Irish patriot, and his associates,
were still cooped up m the Neptune, at St. Si-
nun’s hay.
The impression prevails that .if these pen
ile are landed, there will be a fearful outbreak,
md probably u revolution.
Mitchel enjoys good health.
CP" The Lynchburg Patriot says Ma
jor-Miller, the husband of Mrs. Niagara Miller,
is following her through Virginiu, and lias pro-
ahly by this time overtaken her. She arrived
t Lynchburg on last Sunday week, and dc-
arted on Monday morning in the Western
tage, evidently making her way through the
iteifcir of Virginia towards Kentucky, seeking
,n the meantime a retired-place for berconfine-
ent, which had not taken place yet.”
FP“ Scarlet fever is alarmingly prevalent, in
3a!timor • at present. The Clipper states that
jlast week, in one family residing in the eastern
lection of the city, four children, of ages ran
|ing f. >m 13 months to 13 years, died within a
[few hours, and were all buried on Sunday last
The parents of these children wero on Thurs
day not expected to recover from the same dis
ease.
