Tri’^rK''un i ain I’kI" —Mr- Henry Bow- aW 0 f Philadelphia, has added «n improve- the metalic pen, which will be found xtremely serviceable. An Straight gum elas- li,. tube is inserted in the handle, which, by ,| 10 uso of springs, is filled with ink, which cun be retained or let into the pen at pleasure Lthus making the instrument serve for pen „„d ink-holder also. This is a great cenvo- „ o U ves much time and trouble.— Persons may thus carry their pen and ink in their pockets, prepared for use at any mo ment. jgp The San Antonio Texan of Jan. 31, an- nmmces the arrival at that place of the Brevet Cant. Stuart ol the Rifles, with seventy re cruits for the 8th regiment. The number when leaving New York was 85—fifteen had .lied on the way. Capt. 8tuart will join his regiment in Oregon, going by the way of New Orleans and Panama. Patent Rifle.—A modest Prussian mechanic, hv the name of Charles Hartung, now in this city has invented a new style of rifle, known bv the name of Land Nadel, (darting needle) which is attracting much attention. It is im possible to presonl a scientific description of it without engravings, but we can give our read ers a general notion of its.peculiarities. In the first place It loads at the breech. In the second place, it is discharged by a “darting needle,” which pierces the bottom of the cart ridge and ignites the powder by friction. This is done inside, without any priming, and as well in wet as in dry weather. Behind the cartridge is an nir chamber, in which expand ed air is used in propelling the ball. The breach pin slides in and out. nnd all together operates with durious simplicity. It is said to carry a hall eight hundred yards effectively. ♦ The Scientific Americnn 9tates that the guns were used by the Prussians in their late war with Denmark with terrible effect, and that 611 tlin Prussian light cavalry aro to be equipped with them. • Mr. Hartung hns assigned his invention to Mr. JohnB. Klein, who proposes to submit it to our government for tlieir patron age. • A competent board of commissioners will soon determine whother the invention hns all the merit which : ts simplicity and ingenuity gives promise of.—N. Y. Eve Post. Important to the Ladies.—Ladies should be jmrticular to have their shoes half a size small er than their foet, and he also very careful, in case any questions aro raised as to their being too light, to say, “Oh dear, no! they’re much too large:” for it is a most rematkahlo fact that no lady was ever knowt.' ; yet to wear a light shoe. The soles of ladies’ shoes should he made ns thin ns possible, for it stands to reason they last much longer, from the obvious cause that, an a lady is sure to catch coal with them, she will not be able to wear them, so long as she is confined to her bed, or in doors. It will be seen that the writer of the above construes” the ladies by contraries, a very :nmmon phylosopby now-a-dnys, though by no means complimentary to the gontler sex. Scene at an Execution.—On tho 30th ofNo- fvember, a youngman, who had committed mur tiler, was hung at Santa Fe; he made a full con- j fession of his guilt, and four and a half minutes I before his time expired, he drew from his breast I a knife, and in the presence of five hundred I persons, endeavored to commit Suicide by cut ting his throat. A scuffle then ensued, during which he got possession of a revolver, on the 1 person of the sheriff, (Mr. 0. H. Merritt.) | They finally succeededin binding him, and then [with one desperate leap, he jumped from the I scaffold before the sheriff could cut the rope. It Iliad boen his determination, since his sentence I to destroy himself, and he succeeded. DIED*.
