MORNING NEWS. Trade in England■—A London Letter of Jan. 25th says: Colonial ajid foreign produce of every kind is rising in the market. Coffee, cocoa, tea and su gar, rice, spices dyestuffs, drugs, hemp, wool, dry fruits arc all advancing in price. In addi tion to the great deficiency in the crop of Java coffee, which we have previously alluded to, it is now stated that the Brazilian crop wilt fail 700,000 bags below that of 1847, and 500,000 below that of 1848, or about 100,000,000 lb*, below an average crop, or nearly one fifth of the whole produce of the world. There is con sequently, great excitement in the coffee mar ket. The present price of cotton is about the same as at the close of 1840, lower than at the end of 1846, but higher than in any other of the last ten yoarg. The following is said by the Times to be the number of spindles employed in cotton manufactures. In Great Britain and Ireland, 17,500,000 In the United States, 2,000,000 In Rus'ia (about,) 2,000 000 In France, 2,000,000 In Belgium (about,) 1,500,000 In all other places, 2,000,000 Making a total of 23,000,300 [From the Charleston Mercury.] TIIE EIGHT OF IIAPFIEU BAYS. T9; • As western skies, when day is set, Are spread with fading light, That softly, sadly lingers yet Around the steps of Night; So faintly shine thy pleasures gone, Though lost their noontide rays, And shed a light, though far and wan, The light of happier duys. Thou suy’st, no more tho glories cotno Of fancy’s joyous prime; Untimely blasts have withered some, And some the breath of Time. Yet oft one far reflected beam Around their ruin plays, And memory hails that transient gleam, • The light of happier days. Thy weary eyes for joy’s fair day, Turn hack forevermore; But shall no single starheam play Upon tVie gloom before. Ah ! dark though brood these days of wo That cloud thy saddened gaze, In coming years thou yet shall know, The light of happier days. IO. 5-W Comstock’s allegod discovery in Agri culture, which tho N. Y. Legislature proposes Hi test, professes to he n botanical one, which is of such a nature, that it cannot bo made the subject of a patent. It is claimed that it will keep in health and fertility thn: sickliest and most difficult of trees to manage in this country, the peach; that it will ensure the tlirif- liuess of any plant to which it may bo applied, and make the raising of good crops a far more certain thing than it now is. The discovery con sists, srfys the Evening Post, in avoiding cer tain errors in cultivation which are most likely tu be prejudicial in the best soils, and often produce disappointment to the farmer who lias taken lire most pains. Terrible Winter in Europe.—Snow and ice keep back the mails from Germany to .France. Advices from the middle and Southern provin ces of France ave awful in regard to catastro phes and devastations. The vAilves, driven by starvation from tho mountains and forests, have infested the highways and villages, and devoured persons and cattle. At Rome it was stated the snow was two feet deep. Mortality in California.— A Life Insurance Company in this city finds tho number of deaths among its California risks seventeen, instead of 3J, which they should have been according to the tables. This affords some idea of the hazards to life encountered by California adventurers. Rum Selling in Massachusetts.—The prohibitory laws passed by the Legislature have caused the dealers in liquors in this State to renoit to all sorts of contrivances to evade them. A person was recently tried for viola ting the laws, and the Salem Register gives the following statement in illustration of sumo of the methods practised : The evidence, most of it, was quite amus ing. One witness testified that he bought at n certain time, three quarts of “Essenco of Molasses,” which on trial proved to be New England. At other times he had purchased “West India Beer” and “New England Beer.” He produced a hill on which was changed, in "tie line, “fish,” and in the next “Essence of Molasses.” The defendant was convicted on three counts of one indictment, and one count on the other. • The subjoined statement exhibits the total amount of gold received at tho Philadelphia Mint since the first arrival front California, ac cording to the Treasurer’s account: I otal receipts up to February 1, at the hilsdelphia Mint. $6,500, Receipts since then. 1,500,000 Total. $8,000,000 We learn that all the certificates of deposites of gold dust, issued prior to the-31st of De cember, 1849, will he paid, on demand, at the Mint- Since the last of January, 1850, a new issue of certificates has been made, commen cing at “No. 1.” The coin is not yet ready ur any portion of the new issue. Experience J’na proven both the pnicticubility and usefulnc88 of the penny Press. Within the few yoars past all tho Northern and, Eastern cities, n« well us most of those South ami West of us, have -been sup plied with papeis of this description, whose small di mensions cnablo their publishers to issue them at a price so low as to place them within the reaeh *#1 all, and thufl to make them the best mediums for the pen- eral diffusion of information on all subjects hearing upon the interests of community. By cheapening the Press, all have been participants in its benefits, while the publishers aud conductors, by a greatly increased patronage, have been inude uinply remunerated lortbeji* expenditure of capital and labor. Believing that the growing prosperity of Suvannah authorizes,'and that lie? interests demand the estab lishment of a cheup commercial nnd news medium, we have determined to publish the Daily Morning News ns nearly as possible upon the plan of tbp penny Press of the Northern cities.
