Ignorance of Mohammedan Woman.— The London Evangical Magazine for January Las an interesting letter from a missionary la boring in the Teioogoo county, in Ihdia. The account which he gives in the following pas- sage, of the ignorance and m iaeVy of Moham medan women, is instructive and painfni. It >is Christianity alone that can ennoble woman. Last Saturday a group of Mohammedan wo men came to the Bungalow—a class of women who are scarcely ever to be seen away from their own homes, nnd to whom access is very difficult, rhevlooked about for some time, when 1 went out and asked them why they had come to this country. As usunl with native women, they asked how many children I .had, where they wpre, why I had left them in another country, ™c. They were greatly amused with my lit he girl, who was nursing her doll by my side. One old woman, whose noble bearing would have graced a mansion, particularly excited my attention, and drew forth my sympathy. I asked her what God she 'worshipped? “Mo hammed,” she replied. But I said. “Moham med is not God; he was only a man; you shi u'd WOrpllin fatul ** Trn.ee O —_ The meetings are conducted by Rev. How ard, of Rochester, N. Y., assisted by Rev. Mr. Owings, of Baltimore, of the denomination styled “Church ofGod.” During the first week a series of sermons were delivered, explanatory of tho doctrines of the church, which differ very materially from both Protestant and Cath olic, though in the statement of these differ ences! the greatest care was observed to guard against wounding the feelings of the most sensi tive. Large audiences are nightly in atten dance, and the best order prevails." iyAn extensive revivdl is progressing in the M. E. Church at Middletown, Md., and al so at the Lutheran church at Bakersville. Another very impot tant reason for its adoption is the comfort of the crews ; for when sail is to be shortened in the new rig, the watch on deck can take in the upper top sails, and your ship is immediately brought to what in the old rig would he double reefed topsails, whereas, un der tho old, or present rig, it requiers ail hands to be called to double reef the topsails, which in European winter voyages is a matter of every day occurrence, and in severe nnd stotmy pas- sag s wears out a crew more than ull other du ties combined.— Boston Journal. Received by JOHN M. COOPER. feb 19 Experience lies proven both the practicebility and .,:J5XBL . usefulness of the penny Press. Within the few years pest all Ihe Northern and Eastern cities, as well as most of those South and West of us, have been sup plied with papers of this description, whose small di mensions enable their publishers to issue them ate price so low as to place them within the reaeh „f all, and thus to make them the bestmediums for the gen eral diffusion of information on all subjects bearing upon the interests of community. By cheapening the Press, all have been participants in its benefits, while the publishers end conductors, by a greatly increased patronage, have been mode amply remunerated lor their expenditure of capital and labor. Believing that the growing prosperity of Savannah authorizes, and that her iutereata demand the estab lishment of a cheap commercial and news medium, we have determined to publish the Daily Morning News as nearly as possible upon the plan of the penny Press of the Northern cities. The Morning News wiH be emphatically a Com- mercial Newspaper, devoted to the diffusion of useful information on all subjects of popular interest, and to the advancement of City and State interests, gener ally ; preserving at all limea a strictly neutral and independent position in regard to Politics and Parties. Arrangements have been made for giving the paper all the facilities enjoyed l.y the best Daily Papers, and no pains willbe spared to make itsalisfactory in ull its departments, and to give it the character of a res peetable, useful, uud reliable Journal. In view of the great advantages which must result to tho citizens and business man from the establishment of such a puperin Savannah, w e feel that we may ask and safely count upon a liberal support.
