MORNING NEWS. emeule '- Kilims of Nineveh—JLaynrd Contl rated In March lust, Messrs., l’erkins and Stocking, of the American Nestorian Mission, with anum hot of their native friends from O.oroomiah, Mar Yohanna among them, visited Mosul. Mr, Perkins’ journal of tho excursion into this most interesting region is published in tho Missiona- j ry Herald for February. Wo take from it the ! following extract, descriptive of tho ruins oi an cient Ninevoh : “On the ICth of March,” he Buys, ml tho Tigris and visited tho ruins supposed i .e_ ..f TKmbo rninn nrfi The Vexed Question’Settled!—“Tho than who struck Billy J’altcrsun,” has at last boon apprehend. He is an Irishman by the name of Michael McGee, indicted at the last August term of our Oyer and Terminer, but escaped ar rest until now.—Ho wus arraigned yesterday and plead guilty to the atrocious assault. Thus ■ at last is settled tho grent and important ques tion “who struck Hilly l’attorson.” Miko Mc Gee is the mart.—Newark Adv. How to Disperse a Mob.—During the late rio tous demonstration in 1’aris, connected with tho felling of tho “trees of liberty,” one of the commanding officers emphatically charged his men that an unarmed mob could not honorably bo attacked with swords or firearms ; that tho only weapons legitimately to be used on such an occasion were those furnished by nature ; and of these, in tho present instnneo, ho thought preference should be given to the foot. In n word he required his troops to confine them selves to kicking. Tho idea was adopted with enthusiasm, and tho soldiers entered so heartily into tho fun of it that soon every man of thorn was kicking away at the exposed portion of the flying citoyens with a zeal und energy never displayed in any game of football. The novel mode of attack seemed to take the parties assailed completely hv sur prise, for they made no show of resis tance ; the women, meanwhile, who looked on from doors and windows, were laughing them selves almost into hysterics. These ruins are just opposite Mosul, about three-fourths of a mile distant from the river, tho intervening space being low alluvial, but little higher than the stream. This alluvial space may probably have been formed sincotho period of Nineveh, nnd the Tigris may have pnssed very near the ancient city, as it now washes the walls of the modern Mosul. _ ‘<The ruins consist of ridges, liko old waits; inclosing an area perhaps tour miles long and about two miles broad. The inclosed n- rea is mostly a level cultivated space. On the western bound of this urea, and about in the middle, longitudinally, is a regularly jumped mound of quadrangular form, perhaps fifty feet high, and as many rods square, and nearly lev el on tho top. This mound has a bold, regu lar, external appearance, naturally suggesting the idea of u castle and inclosed palaces. F rom the top of this mound excavations are now prosecuted for ancient remains, and with most interesting results. Only a few men aro at present employed there by Mr. and Mrs. llassam ; Mr. Luyard who is devoted to this enterprise, being absent on a visit to England. Weexamined those excavations with astonish ment and rare entertainment. Descending by an earthly staircase formed by the excuvators some 20 or 30 feet, and then passing horizon tally underground, wo were suddenly ushered into ancient marble palaces, the walls all beau tifully sculptured. We were filled with inex pressible wonder and delight, by what our eyes so unexpectedly beheld. Rod after rod in the same great hulls were passed along by slabs ol marble, nicely fitted together, each slab about six feet high and eight feet long, and seven or eight inches thick—all exquisitely carved with spirited representations—scenes of tho chasi; battle scenes ; warrii rs armed with spears;— tiows and arrows, slings and swords ; and the victors often holding two decapitated heads in one hand, one by the beard and the other by the tuft on tho skull, and brandishing a weapon in tno other hand. There were forts beseiged. There were trains of camels, horses and mules. ! la many case* there were rivers flowing near 'the base of the halls, beneath the actors, tho I streams being filled with sporting fish. There I wore also rural scenes ! peasants on tho road I carrying sacks of provisions on their hacks, &c. The palm tree richly clothed with foliage, was also a common object represented. Further Researches by Layaud. The London Athenoeum gives the following account of the more recent researches of Mr. Luyard : “Letters from Nimroud of Nov.2oth,informs riis of the progress of Dr. Luyard’s researches. A wall of admirably united largo square blocks of limestone, without cement, lias been discovered m the pyramid at Nimroud—but as yet it has been impossible to ascertain what is behind it. It maybe, probably, a chamber or tomb, or it may be only one side of a square niass. supporting tho pyramid of unburked bricks.—What if it should turn out to be the •rue bust.a Nini ? In the entrance of a gateway to the quadrangle opposite Mosul, Dr. Layurd lias reached a pair of enormous winged figures which nppeur to be entire, but have been crack ed und injured by fire. A plan of this en trance would be interesting, as illustrative of •he architecture of tho city. At Kouyunjik a pair of gigantic bulls, back to back, separated W an enormous figure strangling a lion, that at • Mis, but still larger, have been discovered, but the upper parts of all have been destroyed. On •he bulj 3 are interesting inscriptions. We nre find to hear that tho collossal lions at Nimroud were nearly ready for removal. It was expected •hat they would be on the road to England, eat *y in December. Dr. Laynrd has a party of Men excavating at Banshickhah and in a mound tear Khureabad. ^ ^ __ Savannah, 10 barrels Mercer I’otoes a choice 'article, 10 barrels Planting Potatoes, 10 barrels Apples, 10 boxes Oranges. Experience has proven both the practicability and usefulness of the penny Press. Within the few years past all the Northern and Eastern cities, ns woll as most of those South and West of us, havo been sup plied with papers of this description, whgse small di mensions enable their publishers to issue them at a price so low as to place them within the reach of all, and thus to make them the bestme-liums for tho gen eral diffusion of information on ;atl subjects bearing upon theinterests of community, lly cheapening the Frets, all have been participants in itf benefits, while tho publishers and conductors, by a greatly Increased patronage, have been made amply remunerated lor their expenditure of cnpital and labor. Believing that the growing prosperity of Savannah authorizes, and that her interests demand tho estab lishment of a cheap commercial and news medium, wo have determined to publish the Daily Morning News na nearly as possible upon the plan 61 tho penny Press of the Northern cities.
