’ I v „„ old wider, is the gentleman who con-
l .'-M 'this enterprise. He is of the opinion
ill'll the ioute now travelled to El Paso del
\ rto could be made nearly one hundred miles
•barter. He is also clearly of the belief tlint
I'he route through Western Texas is far supe-
i ior to all others in every essential particular,
.,nd that all the Chihuahua, and a large portion
,,l the Santa Fc trade, must take that course.
Among the acts of the lute Legislature are
one reducing the property tax one-fourth, say
from twenty cents on the one hundred dollars
of value to fifteen cents ; and the poll tax
tVnni one dollar to fifty cents. At the end of
ihc session there was Hbout $25,000 or $30,000
in the treasury. Another act allows the cred
itors of the lute Republic to surrender their
certificates to tho commissioner of the Land
Office, ufter tho 1st day of May next, and re
ceive land scrip at the rate of fifty cents per a-
e, for the amount, of cluim as allowed by tbo
auditors. This, however, only extends to
claims amounting, at the above rate to as
much as 320 acres. Smaller claims aro not
vet provided for.
' An act has been passed extending the time
for tilling claims against tho late Republic to
September, 1851, and barring all claims not fill
ed by that time.
An act of justice has been done the Santa Fe
and Mier prisoners. They are allowed puy
for the whole time they were detained as pris
oners in Mexico. Tho amounts thus due them
to be paid iulund as other claims against the
late Republic.
The great rail road hill was also passed by
the late Legislature. It grants to the General
Government the right of way for the great Pa
cific rail road, (that is to be,) and donates to
the builder every alternate section of the pub
lic land over which it may pass, to the extent of
five miles on either side.

guardian Angel is represented in the picture as Imv-
’ lot descended to the earth—he is spreading his
S s over Daniel as a defensive shield, to cover tho
of the kneeling saint, enfolding him as in n man
tle of soft and celostinl plumage. At the sight of the
vision, tile lions shrink back with fear, or hushed by
the voice that stills tho raging storm, sinks down into
deep and subdued repose. The Prophet is depicted
in a posture of devotion, with his countenance beam
