Gold IN’ Massachusetts.—A gold mine has been found on Bzra Hubbard’s land in Westfield, Mass. The gold is fine, found in small scales, and is said to be plenty, | From the Fayetteville (N. C.) CarolinltajMarch 9.] 1 Great Fall of Flesh and Blood. Extraordinary Phenomenon in Sampson coun- Wo^roceived on Wednesday lust the follow ing communication from Mr. Clarkson, through Mr. Holland, of Clinton, and take great pleas ure in laying the astonishing particulars before s»ixr renders • .•On the 15th February, 1850, tlioro fell within 100 yards of the residence of Thomas M Clurkson, in Sampson Co., a shower of Flesh and Blood, about 30 feet wide, and as far us it was traced, about 250 or 300 yds. in length. The pieces appeared to be flesh, liver, lights, brains, and blood. Some of tho blood run on the leaves, apparently very fresh. Three of his, (T. M. C’s)children were in it, and ran to their mother, exclaiming, ‘Mother their is meat falling!' Their mother went immediately to see, hut the shower was over i but there lay the flesh, &c. Neill Campbell, Esq., living close by, was on tho spot, shortly after it fell, and pronounced it as above. One of his children was about 150 yards from the shower, and came running to tho rest, saying he smelt something like blood. During the time it was failing there was a cloud over head, having a red appearance like a wind cloud. There was no rain. Tho above you may rely on; and by Mr. Holland you have pieces of tho flesh, which are reduced by being kept so long. Yours. &c., T. M. C” Tho piece which was left with us, has been examined with two of the best microscopes in the place, and tho existence of blood well es tablished ; but nothing wus shown giving any indication of the character of the matter. If’ has the smell both in its dry state and when macerated in water, of putrid flesh: and j them can scarcely be a doubt that it is such. It is astonishing, and we may say provoking ! nlso. thut an occurrence of the kind should I happen within 13 miles of a village (13 miles south west of Clinton) of intelligent persons, f and no one felt interest enough in it to go und get information about it. It is three weeks alter it occurred before any account of it is sent to the press. An occurrence that is calculated to strike men with awe; and we are told that some persons listened to tho relation of it, and looked upon it as an idle tale, deeming impos sible that such a thing could have occurred ! The cloud from which it fell is said to have been of a red appearance, which is ascribed to I the clouds in former cases of this kind. Although by no means frequent, this is not the I first time that such an occurrence has taken j place, even in this country. But as yet, die ! most learned are unable to give any rational conjecture as to the cause of such a singular | phenomenon. The library of Rev. Mr. Thurston, of Kailua, Hawaii, has been destroyed by fire, including j n number of unpublished translations and other I manuscripts. Mail Robber Arrested. — Leander M. I Cutchin has been arrested at Salem, Illinois, j charged with having robbed the United States [mail at different times during the past year; he l is supposed to have several accomplices. fi?" The New Jersey Legislature adjourned Ton Friday, Sine die, without doing anything to j weaken the railroad monopoly in that St&te, (alleged to be injurious. t3F* The U. S. Ship Erie, with stores for the 1 Mediterranean Squadron, now at the Brooklyn j Navy yard, N. Y. is ready, and will proceed to sea immediately upon receipt of her orders.— The following is a list of her officers: W. D. Porter, Lieut. Com.; Levi D Slamm, I Purser; Jphn H. Wright, Passed Assistant Sur- [geon; Andrew Bryson, Acting Master; J. B. Bohror, Marshall Smith and Geo. The subject of this painting is taken from the 6th chapter of Daniel, and the 22nd verse; “ My God hath sent his angels, and shut the lion's mouths." The guardian Angel is represented in tho picture ns hav ing just descended to the enrth—he is spreading his wings over Daniel as a defensive shield, to cover the head of the kneeling saint, enfolding him as in a man tle of soft and celestial plumage. At the sight cf the vision, the lions shrink back with fear, or hushed by the voice that stills the raging storm, sinks down into deep and subdued repose.
