Disttcssing Accident.—A correspondent at the Upper New York Mills has sent ns an ac- coupt qf a very distressing accident as a cau tion to parents and others. Tho parents of the child referred to aro interesting French people, wh6 tire without kindred in this coun try, but have made many friends by their quiet pleasing manners, although they aro quite ig norant of- English. The child was an only one. We give the statement in the words of our cor respondence : “On Friday afternoon the mother was wash ing, with her little follow nearly 2 yeurs, - old playing about her, when he found a small screw which was used to fasten a lock on a bureau drawer.— His mother took it from him two of three times, and, the last time put it 1 out of his reach as sho-supposed.—Soon after she went out to hang up her clothes, and was gone four or five minutes; returning she found the little boy on the floor, heaving, and by his looks dud actions, imploring help. She looked for the screw and found it gone. The little boy bnd got it, and. putting it ift his mouth, swallowed it, producing strangulation and almfist imme- Utica^Gazctte^^^ „ ATLAS.— Tho above work is spoken of by the London I’rcss ns being tho best, cheapest and most correct Atlas c» er pupflshed. Mount Vesuvius.—A correspondent at Na- I]es of tho London Daily Nows, under date of February 12, suys that the eruption of Mount li nuvius, of which he gives the following ac- liunt, lmd compelled the Pope to remove from •oitici to tho palace on Capo di Mcnte. For a week we have now enjoyed, the most iilcmlid eruption which has taken place for fcanv years. The ashes have been carried as Er, wc know as twenty miles und, no doubt, Lch farther. The lava descends , in two streams bon Ottajano, where” it has destroyed a palace Bid much land belonging to a nobleman of that tune, and another toward Torei deli' Annur.zi is,while the flames and the.immense mosses of bek which aro ejected, form at uight a terrific fcctacle. The roaring of the mountain on Saturday light lusfciqs such as to disturb the whole coun ty fur miles round, and here in Naples our win dows shook with every repetition of it, which las unceasing night and day. Immense corwds, jf course, walk over to the other side'of the!*bay get a nearer view ; religious processions are roving about for the intercession of the Ma linina »nd the Saints; and it is said that the ■ops is to- perform some ceremonial to cause, lie Mountain to stay its ruinous proceedings. I tin sorry to odd that the accidents to thbse who lent over have been very sad. [ On Saturday night a young Pole was struck h the leg bv a burning stone, which cut through [lie limb, and he died on the mountain from loss |f blood. A young American officer was struck i the arm, which hung suspended by a bit of lesh. On his arrival in Naples he had lost so Jiuch blood that ttn amputation could not take llnce, and as no reaction has up to this time liken place, it is not expected that he can live, k gendarme is also reported killed, an'd two pen who had failed a sacrifice to the eruption, kero said to have been buried yesterdayat Por- Kci. Some anxiety have been felt for an En glishman and his wife who had notreturned from 1 visit to the mountain; and yet crowds roll on light and dayfo see this wonderful plienome- ■ n. From the neighborhood of the mountain the inhabitants have fled, and the powder from the magir.ine at. Torre has been removed. The Quintuple African Squadron.—Tho french Government has announced to Great Britain its intention of withdrawing from the [treaty stipulations of 1815, by which it is re quired to muintuin a fleet of twenty-six sail on the Coast of Africa, to aid in preventing the ■lave trade. The treaty in question was bind ing for five years, and empires in May next, at khicli time either party nas the option of re.- Jiring from the compact. This experiment as failed to answer the humane purposes in ktiich it originated. Our treaty with Great Jhitain requires the United States to keep Jighty guns on the African Coast. We have juptured about six thousand slaves from the piling vessels, and England perhaps twice as Vny, which have been transported to her felonies. Successful Mining—The Pittsburg Copper Sompqny has published a report showing tho kondition of its affairs on the 13th of January, 1850, from which tho following facts aro gath ered : “The Company commenced operations pout five years since; capital paid up-$110,- p00. Paid a dividend of $50,000 in 1840, an other in February of this year, of $42,000 and apposed to {fay a third in July next, of the nine amount, making a total of $144,000, and lave $48,000 in crib besides which pays back hhc whole capital, stock and interest. This is ■ho most successful experiment in mining oper ations which has ever boon made in the United States. The number of shares is about 6000. JT they are valued at $100 each, the dividend bf tlie present year will be fourteen per cent.— 'Baltimore American. * A Pleasant Wedding in Missouri.—A aughtcr of Mrs. Sullivan’.s was married, and number of youngpersons from town wishingto nave a little sport went down. While there, words passed between the, “town and country boys,” which brought on a fight, wk n pistols, knives, stones, &x, were freely used. A young man by the name of Skinner was shot through the abdomen, and a man by tho name of Shaw through the arm. Skinner is still alive, but «»nnot recover. Shaw is not dangerously wond- , ’ and will get well. Rohrer, who shot Skin- Ile r and Shaw, has left. James Jones hud sev- cra ' blows with clubs and rocks, but was not ser iomly injured.—Si.
