MORNING NEWS. Serious Ciiargk.—A Mr. Lewis was ar rested n few duys since at Grafton, N. Y-, while in the act of being ordained as n Baptist Min ister, charged with having murdered Smith in the unti-mit excitement. Suicide.—A young German numed R. A. . Meyer, shot himself through th.e Mouth with a pistol in New York on Saturday night. A recommendation in his pocket from the U. States Consul at I.eipsic, speaks of him as hav ing been HUpcrinteiidnnt of all the telegraph lines in Prussia. The above work is spoken of by the London l’ress being the best, chehptst and most correct Atlas e\ ... published. Racli purt at 25 cents contains two e) equally engraved Maps, very carOiully Colored and embellished with suitable border!, of elegant and ap propriate Engravings, illustrative of the manners and customs of different countries* and accompanied with four folio pages of descriptive letter press. At the conclusion of the Atlas a complete Index will be given of the principal cities and towns hi tlio world .--their latiudo and longitude—country in which situ- a ted und population. The whole ito l>e completed in thirty-two parts, at 25 cents, l’arts one to seventeen tccefved said for sulo by mur 8 JOHN M. COOPER. A Serenade. O lady, wake ! the owlets flit Around our mad guitars ; The billowy moonlight night is lit Exclusively with stars. No more the verdant king of day The stormy brook congeals, No more the lambs and engines play About tlio frozen fields. From many a wavy axle tree, From many a sandy bog, Refulgence wafts the melody Of nigntingale and frog. The joys to come are long gone by, The past will soon beMierc, And rain, transcending in the sky, Falls on my listening ear. -Shrill booming lightnings roll about The hills where boys are skating, And silent thunders whispering shout— •‘I’m ti ed, love, of waiting.” Pnle Luna weeps—Elysian lands Are calling from above ; So wove your lattice through your hunds And clap your night cap, love ! Guano.—We understand this article is pro (lacing a wonderful revolution on the poor wo- on nut lands in Lower Virginia. Wo hear of seme cases where the first crop has paid for land, guano, und all other expenses, and left money in the (lockets of the farmers. Rich mond Timet. Removal of Free Negroes from Virginia.— The bill which had previously passed the Vir ginia House, appropriating $30,000 per annum i the colonization of freo negroes of that Stnte i Africa, is now a law, having passed the Sen- Hte, with an amendment which opposes an un nual lax of $1 upon every mule free negro in die State from 21 to 50 yenrs of age. The fund arising from this source to be appropria ted in like manner with the $30,000, unless the Legislature otherwise prescribe. “Rillin'on a Rail."—An itinerant scamp who left his own wife in Illinois, and ran away with another woman, attempted to preach lately nt Grandview, Iowa; but some of the citizens, who had got wind of the fellow’s true character, gallanted hint from the pulpit, to the church door, where he was placed on the sharp pdgo nf a rail, and in that situation ridden about town. A Joke for the Ladies.—The editor of a paper in Providenco lately informed his readers | that tlio Indies always pull oft'the left stocking hist.—This, as may bo supposed, created some little stir among his fair readers, nnn w hile in positive terms they denied the statement, they at the samo tinm declared that he had no busi ness to know it, even if such was the fact.; und pronounced hint no gentleman. He proves it, however, by a short argument. “When one stocking is pulled off first, there is another left sin: and pulling off this is taking the left stock- jig oft' last. * The Essex and Phocbe.—Our readers aro .doubtless familiar with the particulars of the terrible combat between the U. S. frigate Essex, Com. Porter, and H. B. M. frigate I’hnebe, Gapt. Hillyar, aided by the brig Cherub, which look place in the harbor of Valparaiso during the lust war with England. The details nf this sanguinary fight, in which nearly ull the officers and crew of the Essex perished, are already matters of naval history, and the nnmo of the gallant Com. Porter is enrolled high in the ist of naval heroes. Both commanders ar however, long since dead, but both have left gallant umns to represent them in the navies of 1 ifcir countries, and while the steamship Geor- fi'a was at Chagres ft short time since, those gentlemen .were, for the first time in their lives, •Jlmust within hailing distance of each other, Lieut. Hillyar being in H. B. M. ship-of-the- ln « Asia, at Panama, and Limit. Porter in fmutnand of the Georgia on this side. A mect- ihese vnunjf officers would have been 'only interesting, but circumstances prevented ", nnrt perhaps they never will be brought so near together again.—Picayune. D fitting-—An indignant husband, in earborn county, Indiana, a few day* since, ™ught sun against a chap for kissing his wife. e matter wa* compromised by the chap feeing to pay the injured husband $16. Discharge of B. F. Brown.—Wo have already noticed the discharge of this individ ual from custody, who, it will bo remembered, wus arrested recently nt Detroit, on a charge of having absconded from Wushington, after de frauding the government. The Detroit Tribune gives un account of the examination, which lusted three days, being principally un argument on the validity of the affidavit of Auditor Clayton, on which Brown hud been arrested. The court, however, decided in favor of its admissibility, but on finding that there was no testimony from Wush ington to sustain the averments of theaffidavit, it was pronounced insufficient, and he was forth with discharged. From this wo should infer that the solemn averments of a government official uro lightly regarded by the judicial au thorities of Michigan.
