MORNING NEWS.
[Correspondence of the Morning New..]
New York, March 21,1850.
The trial of Prof. Webster, in Boston, i<
now the most oxciting subject hero; and “ ex
tras” and “evening editions” with the latest
lews, are eagerly sought for. At present the
mystery of the affair is as dark ns ever; and un
less some much stronger evidence be afforded,
even of the identity of the remains found in the
Medical College, no jury can possibly render
a verdict of guilty against the nccused. The
defence I understand will be, that the remains
are not those of Dr. Park man; and that the
whole affair is a conspiracy against Prof. Web
ster. Something may come out too, they say,
shewing the motive of this conspiracy, by
which others in the College will he placed in
un unpleasant position before the public.
I may state for the benefit of your lady read
er., that I have been indulged with a sight of
the new stylo of spring bonnets, and it is really
“a love of a bonnet," in all respects. I can
not describe the shape, for it is beyond my
power; in fact, I dont think that oven Willis
could do it justice. A piece of Man Millinery
says of it:—“ Like a beautiful mouth, it is
neither too large nor too small, and like a girl
passing the sweet printems de la vis, it becomes
a woman marvelously.” The color is green—
hut then such a green ! delicate, tender, and
tinted here and there with the faintest suspi
cion of crimson, like a leaflet prematurely
JLutumnized. 'The ladies may possibly form
some idea of the color from .this description,
hut as the newspapers say, the bonnet itself
: mi|st be seen to be appreciated.”
There was a rumor a day or two since, that
Barnum intended to ro-build the Park Theatre,
fur Jenny Lind to appear in; but it is not so;
he is building, I am told, a magnificent Music
Hall near Grace Church, to be called “ Jenny
I.ind Hull,” and offers it on lease to a compe-
[tent and responsible man. It will be a grand
iffair. The persons opposed to capital pun-
pshment, have been very ntrenuous in their en-
leavors to induce the Legislature to abolish jt;
mt they have experienced a great disappoint-
lent, as the committee to whom the subject
was referred, have reported adverso to the
prayer of the petitioners. Happily the gallows
1* not often used here ; but I am of opinion,
that its terrors produce a salutary influence,
j The Clay Ball, on Tuesday night, was a
prilliant affair. Niblo’s large saloon was
irowded with lovely women and gallant men.
The pleasure, however, was considerably marr-
:d by a little emeute that took place during the
nipper. The health of Mr. Clay was, of
Bourse, the first toast; and after it had been
proposed, Mr. Thayer, our Public Adminis
trator, got up, and was pouring forth a fervid
jtulogy on Daniel Webster, but was assailed
|with cries of “down with the traitor," “down
ith the political prostitute,” &c., &e., all of
hich must have been very gratifying and edi
fying to the young ladies. Then somebody else
[<>t up, and somebody else knocked him down,
ind for a few minutes there whs a row, and no
nstake; but the angry passions cooled down,
ind champagne and ladies’ smiles dispersed
[he cloud, and “all was sweet again.”
1 he complimentary benefit to Mr. Blake
h the Broadway Theatre, last night, was a
lumper; even the orchestra was filled avith la
ps, and the musicians played behind the
•enes. J should suppose that it will realize
him over $2000—a very pretty compli-
lent, besides which, a magnificent pitcher and
dver were presented to him. He goes, logeth-
with Wheatley and Alexina Fisher, to
,c Walnut-street, Philadelphia, next week,
'here the comedy of “Extremes” is to be pro
ceed.
We have heard nothing yet of the wherea-
iut * 01 young Talmas, of custom-hone* fraud
notoriety; but if he was wanted, 1 guess they
could find him.
The Canada and Washington left here yes
terday; the mail by the former consisted of
57,586 letters, and the latter 10,167.
The workmen of the city are nearly all on
the “strike”—the coach-painters and black
smiths are the last to follow their leaders. I
believe the journeymen carpenters have obtain
ed their demand.
The hotel-keeper, at the East will be very
indignant to learn that the Sea Serpent has
chosen another latitude; and still more so, if it
bo true, as we learn by telegraph, to-day, that
he has run ashore at Beaufort, near the mouth
of Skull Creek! Barnum will, doubtless, send
on a committee, and secure the “critter" for
his Museum. It will look well by the side of
the Mermaid.
We have the Hutchinson nest of vocal
ists, with us again—three brothers—and that
bewitching pieco of unsophisticated fomale
loveliness, Abby, their sister. By-thc-bye,
Abby is now a wife, and probably u mother.—
She was married early last year, I think, to a
Mr. Patton, son of the Rev. Dr. Patton, of
this city. Why she uppears again before the
public now, I cannot imagine, unless there
a screw loose in their domestic arrange
ments—no matter, however, from what cause,
she will be warmly welcomed here by hosts of
friends and udmiiers.

A Horrible Fight.—On tho evening of
tho 7 th instant, a fatal affray occurred at Mon
terey, a email town in Texas, near the upper
part of Caddo Parish (La.) between Reuben
R. Harrison and John Lester on the one side,
and John Collins on the other—so says tho
Shreveport Gazette, which adds :
“The difficulty originated in the following
manner: Harrison had just returned from a
trip to Alabama with his family, and while get
ting oft' the boat at Monterey, (near which he
lived), some game chickens, that he had brought
with him, got looso, and Lester, who was in
his einplyy, while ordering a negro to catch
them, brought on a dispute with Collins. Col
lins, who was a blacksmith, went to his shop,
and after preparing his gun, called to Lester to
come down if ho wanted satisfaction. Hflfrri-
son and Lester went to the shop, and a3 the
latter stepped in, Collins knocked him down
with his tongs, when he was shot with a repeat
er by Harrison. He then turned upon the lat
ter, and struck him on the head, and again
turned and struck Lester, when Harrison shot
him a second time. After receiving the last
wound Collins threw the tongs at Harrison,
which struck him just below the eye,- and went
down in his mouth. He then took a sledge
hammer, and, we are told, beat his brains out.
Lester died instantly—Collins lived until noxt
morning. They were all men of families. We
were acquainted with neither of the parties
personally, but knew Mr. Harrison from re
putation, who, though wild, was much es
teemed.”
Academy Burnt,—Tho Union Academy,
situated near Creagh’s Mill, Wilcox county,
Ala., was consumed on the night of the 4th
inst., together with all the books, maps, globes
and furniture. It is believed to have been the
work of an incendiary.
13F* Twenty-eight members of the Missis
sippi Legislature signed a written protest a
gainst tho acts of the Legislative convention in
electing members to the Nashville Convention,
as novel, transcending their legislative duties,
and “tending to subvert the dignity, harmony,
perpetuity and prosperity of the Union of the
United States of America.” The Natchez
Courier, concurring in this view, expresses its
earnest hope that no delegate belonging to the
Whig party will accept the station assigned to
him, or consent to serve in the Nashville Con
vention, “at least until regularly chosen by tho
people.” A very large meeting has been held
at Raymond Hinds, county, Miss., in which it
is declared that as it is evident that Congress
will not now pass the Wilmot proviso, the Nash
ville Convention ought to he abandoned.
On the other hand, a large meeting has been
held at Columbia, Tenn., at which resolutions
in favor of the convention were adopted, and
the conduct of the Legslature in relation to it
was condemned. A meeting has been held at
Memphis approving the convention, and ten
dering the public buildings of the city should
it.be determined not to go to Nashville. The
Legislature of Mississippi have also tender
ed the use of the Capitol at Jackson
Sunday Railroad Traveling.—The stock
holders of the Pennsylvania Railroad, at a
large meeting held in Philadelphia on Thurs
day evening, adopted resolutions requiring the
Directors to open a poll for thirty days, at
which the stockholders shall vote by ballot for
or against running the trains on all the days of
the week.

yzn and Stllltngia.
This preparation is a highly Concentrated Ex
tract, containing all the Active Medicinal Prop
erties of the Conyzn, (commonly known as Black
Rout,) and the Stillingia, oi Queen’s Delight.
These plants have been long since used among
our Southern Negroes und in empyrical practice,
with the happiest results’, in cases of Chornic
Rheumatism, Ulcers of longstanding, and Sec
ondary Syphilis. It is much superior to any pre
parations of Sursaparilla as an alterative, being
more uctive and prompt in its operation on the
system. These facts have induced the subscrib
ers to present to the attention of Physicians a
preparation prepared according to strict Chemi
cal and l’armaceutical science, devoid of all the
feculent and inert parts of the roots, not doubt
ing that it will supersede the unscientific and
crude preparations hitherto used.

Experience has proven both the practicability and
usefulness of the penny Press. Within the few years
past all the Northern and Eastern cities, as well as
most of (hose South and West of us, have been sap-
plied with papers of this description, whose small di
mensions enable their publishers to issue them at a
price so low as to place them within the reach oi all,
and thus to make them the best mediums for the gen
eral diffusion of information on ;all subjects bearing
upon the interest* of community. By cheapening the ‘
Press, all have been participants in its benefits, while
the publishers and conductors, by a greatly increased
patronage, have been made amply remunerated for their
expenditure of capital and labpr.
Believing that the growing prosperity of Savannah
authorizes, and that her interests demand the estab-
lisbmen tof a cheap commercial and news medium,
we have determined to publish the Daily Morning
News ns nearly as possible upon the plan of the penny
.Press of the Northern cities.
The Morning News will be emphetically a .Com
mercial JYeiospopcr, devoted to the diffusion of useful
information on all subjects of popular interest, and to
the advancement of City and State interests, gener
ally ; preserving at all times a strictly neutral and
independent position in regard to Politics and Parties.
Arrangements have been made for giving the paper all
the facilities enjoyed by the best Daily Papers, and
no pains willbe spared to make it satisfactory in all its
departments, and to give it the character of a-res
pectable, useful, and reliable Journal.
In view of the great advantages wbioh must result
to the citizens and business man from the establishment
of such a paperin Savannah, we feel thatwe may ask
and safely count upon a liberal support.
