Eu|gland. The news possesses no interest. Commercially it is less encouraging than was anticipated. From the Continent there is nothing important, and the political affairs of England present but little of special interest. Nothing eventful in n political sense has arisen in Parliament, and nothing is anticipated beferethe Chan cellor produces bis budget. Lord John Russel has given notice that it is in con templation by tlm Government to abolish the office of Lord Lieutenant in Ireland, together with the Vice Royal Court at Dublin. The intention being to have Irish affairs managed by the Home Department, by a Secretary for Ireland. Mr- Jones Lloyd, the eminent banker, is about to be raised to the peerage. Mr. D'lsraeli being ill, Sir James Graham is now the recognised leader of the op position in Parliament—his chief hobby being a change ill the monetary system. Her Majesty lias authorised a publication of the fol lowing liberal rewards for the discovery of Sir John Franklin, vie : £20,000 to any one who will effectively relievfffthe crews of the ships ; £10,000 for relieving, or for such information os may lead to the relief of any of the ciew ; and £10,000 to any one who shall first succeed in ascertaining their fate. s The Canadian annexation movement excites but „„int of considerable commercial importance as be- little attention Public sentiment appears to be favor- {JJ the head of our railroad communication and the « bl «.to -receding to any decided expression of the wish- inart of a large portioii of the trade of those sections of Tennessee and Alabama which adjoin our State. We give below an extract from a letter from #m en terprising and intelligent gentleman to otoe of our lead ing mercantile firms, by Which it will be seen that the wuy is open for the prosecution of a profitable «nd im portant trade with that section. Chattanooga, March 17, 1850. Gentlemen: I would be much obliged to you for a li*t of the prices in your inerket of all kinds of pro duce raised in this section, such as Bacon, Lard, Flour, Corn, Peas, Beans, &c., <fcc. My agency here commenced too late to do much in the Cotton trade this season. Charleston and Augus ta Interests have had their agents all over North Ala bama, for the last six months, with money and fair promises, “drumming” for the trade. I have lost no opportunity to endeavor to impress on the minds of merchants and farmers, the propriety of making this the market for Cotton the coming season. As it now in, but few bales are received here that are not bought in advunce or before it left the river bank, and in some instance* I am credibly informed, that the crops have been contracted for before the Cotton was out of the boll. I shall visit your city ill a few weeks, in company with several merchants and farmers, who will take pleasure in forming a personal acquaintance with you. Yours, respectfully, » E. R. Mills. Gen. Mills is a gentleman of etelling merit and re liability. He was formerly the Superintendent of Transportation on the State Road, and is at present Agent of the Central Railroad and Banking Compa ny. Gen. M. is not only prepared to advance on pro duce, but is exerting himself to direct it this way, and should receive the cordial co-operation of our busi ness men, who have so large an interest in the matter, being the Agent of the Bunk here, our merchants have only to obtain the proper letters of credit or in troduction to him from that institution to insure the requisite business accommodations and facilities to enable them to go into a market which promises the most satisfactory returns. We will again recur to this subject, having much to say which we must forego at present, in consequence of the crowded state of our columns. ea of tho Canadians Lord Denman harretired fiom the wool sack, and Lord Campbell bas been appointed Chief Justice. Collins’new line of steamers command a large share of attention and good will. The London Herald says that it will take something in the shape of a steamship that was never produced to heat them. The conduct of Lord Palmerston, in continuing the Greek blockade, is severely commented upon by the English journals, and were it not for the belief which exists, that his Lordship has made a demonstra tion against Russia, his conduct would meet with gen eral reprobation. The Russian court presented an energetic remon strance against the proceedings of the English govern ment, and public opinion is general that, if necessary, tho Czar will give the Crooks efficient support. The Russian note to the minister at London says : “You will demand of lord Palmerston to what extent he in tends to employ force in support "of his claims, in or der that the allies of king Otho may be in a position to consider what menns may be necessary for them to adopt to guarantee the independence of that monarch and his people." The London Gazette says that a Queen’s message passed through Malta on the 25th ult., with orders to SirM. Parker to cease hostilities against Greece. Advices from Calcutta are to the 18th of Januaaiy, and from Bombay to the 4th of February, have been received. Politically the news possesses interest. France. The anniversary of the Republic passed off without disturbance, and the Ministers of Finance states that tho revenues will be adequate to the public service this year without a new loan increased taxes. The Postmaster opens all letters passiqg to and from sus pected persons. This conduct has given rise to warm debates in the Assembly. It is said that France and Russia are completely united on the Greek questions. Letters from Toulon state that the French fleet in the Levant had sailed for the Greek coast. We hear from the Budget just published, fthat the army is to be reduced to 408,600 men and that the ^expenses of the nation are to be reduced 84,000,000 francs. Commercial intelligence. Latest dates. UNION [Tp We invite the attention of the gentlemen en gaged in constructing the Savannah Gas-works to the following paragraph which wo take from the Balti more Clipper of the 23d inst: Water Gas.—This Gas has been in operation at this office long enough to demonstrate its superiority over all other discoveries, both hi intensity of light and cheapness of supply. It has been exnmined by gentlemen from various sections of the Union, who have admitted that it is the best and cheapest light that has yet been furnished. We understand that Mr. Brown, the inventor and proprietor, has received va rious applications for supply, and that the new depot on President street, will shortly be illuminated with this Gas. The editors of the Clipper are gentlemen on whom the fullest reliance may be placed; the last to counten- irnre humbug in any form. We know too, that they liuve given this subject much qjtention, having gone to considerable expense in the erection of works for the manufacture of gas for their own establishment. Caspeb Hauser.—This most remarkable phenom enon has attracted great attention, and has utterly confounded speculation as to its true character. It will be seen by the advertisement, that the.ex- hibitor has removed to Lyceum Hall, where this ninth wonder of the world will be exhibited fora few nights longer. In order tq afford all an opportunity of seeing it, the price of admission has been reduced to 25 cents. Health of Mb. Calhoun.—The Washington Correspondent of the Charleston Courier, writing un der date of 24th inst, says: Mr. Calhoun was much better to-day. His fever was gone, and, though very weak, he was not considered aa being in any danger. I find that the rumor of his being engaged in dictating nnother address to the Senate is unfounded.
