While a clerk in New Orleans, nn Tues day, wa3 proceeding to the Louisiana Bank to deposit $2,510, he was jostled by a crowd, and immediately afterwards the money was missing. The checks, in the book, were un touched. The alarm was given, and when the hank was notified of the theft, it was found that the bills had been exchanged for smaller currency. Several old rogues were arrested on suspicion. GF* The city of Galvasuin has successfully pleaded ihe statute of limitations against the payment ot its promissory notes issued in 1840 in settlement of debts contracted for medical services during the prevalence of the yellow fever. The claims were much larger in amount, neresculed down to par funds, and the obliga- tionsare now discharged by the statute. “Poor Old Man.”—The Boston Mail states that Mr. Wilby, who was formerly a wealthy merchant of that city, and who died lately in the alms-house, in New York, and was buried in Potter's f ield, bus several daughters in Boston, “who are the wives of men who control the heaviest operations” in State street. {3®* The Constitution of New Hampshire, which at present embodies sundry very objec- lionablo features not very creditublo to a re publican government, the people have just de cided, shall undergo an immediate revision— the question having been put to them in the late election. The “revision,” is carried by about 13,000 majority. tqF* The Rochester ghost is said to have disappeared. He stubbornly refuses to give any more knockings. Rumor states he is coining A Watch to it.—The announcement that a golden chain, (worth $400) emblematical of the golden chain of the Onion, was presented to the Hon. Daniel Webster, us a token of gratiude fur his distinguished public services, especially un a iecenl occasion, has suggested to certain other admirers of his eloquence and patriotism, the idea of attaching a watch to it. Accordingly the most superb gold watch which enn be found in New York is to be, if it has nor alrcudy been, procured, and presented to the “Defender of the Constitution,” in connexion with the chain. Melancholy Occurrence—A Father Killed by His Daughter.—The Mineral Point Tri bone learns that a Mr. Hurlburt, near Cotlage Inn., La Fayette county, was killed by his i own daughter on Monday last, under the fol lowing circumstances. Mr. H.. in a fit of in- I toxication, had driven his wife from the house i and attempted to commit violence upon bis ' daughter, which she resisted. He then with a i large knife in his hand, threatened her, upon I which she retreated and her father followed. 1 She cuughl an axe and swung it before her in I self-defence. Her father rushed forward and 1 came in contact with the axe, gwhich struck him on ths neck, nearly severing his head from , his body. A coroner’s jury was called and, af- lAer examination, considered that the act was j perfectly justifiable on ■ the part of the girl, it [.appearing very cl earl v a case of self-defence. A Man Eaten by Wolves.—The New York courier extracts from the Repuhlique, published Iflt iarbas, (High Pyrinees.) France, thefollow- 1 ing horrible account of a man being destroyed I by wolves near that place: j On the night of the 4th instant, a terrible I diama, without a precedent, perhaps, in the an Inals of our country, occurred in the valley of the I Aure. A pedlar was returning from the village Sarraculin, uhout nineo’clock in the evening, |to Ins home, when, in a sharp turn of the road, jtne miserable man found bimself face to face [With five wolves, which the snow had driven Itrom the mountains into the valley, to obtain Vnmething to eat. Imagine the fright, the ter ror of the unfortunate man. He was without , rrns: Brit Alia walking stick, which was found token in the mud in the road, which was nucli stirred .up. All seemed to indicate that he '“opposed to the wolves adesoeiate although I'so less resistance. How long a time the com et endured, and all the details of this horrible ratna, are wrapt in mystery. All that is cer- |>sin is, that the wolves, aftPr having killed lth» lr '- 1C i t ’ ln ’ d ru ££ e d his body some steps from Imp ’ a,1< ^ l here entirely^devoured it. ■ The |L|.
