On Wednesday, the 13th of March, 1850, the Charleston newspapers announced the in telligence that the steamer William Seabrook, a mail packet betwoon the cities of Charleston and Savannah, had met, and that the captain, crew and passengers ha4 made a close inspec-" tion of the lar-famed Sea Serpent, whila cross ing Fort Royal entrance, ton miles below the town of Beaufort. The citizens of this nn- cient nnd quiet place wore thrown into a state of tho greatest excitement, and enquiries were made in various quarters to ascertain if any further intelligence could be gathered respect ing so distinguished a visitor. Thursday, the 4th, was a stormy day, and tho fishermen who frequent Broad River (the local name for Port Royal Sound) at this season, in pursuit of the Drum Fish, were unable to make their wonted appenrnnee upon her angry bosom—it was, therefore, not until midday on Friday that posi tive intelligence was brought, from various quar ters along tho upper shores of Broad River that a hideous monster of the deep was to be seen taking his pastime in her briny wave. AH accounts agreed in representing it as an enor mous Serpent. One said it had the head of r Bull Dog; another that it hissed like a Ser pent; another that it brayed like an Ass ; an other that it hud a tongue like the Devil’s tail, which it would thrust out at times; and lastly, one represented it as n cross between a Serpent and a Hippopotamus. The accounts were posi tive and direct, as to the existence of the Ser pent, from individuals who were entitled to be believed ; and those who before had been skep tical began to.give into the general current, and we are free to confess, that after a conver sation with a*nautical friend, we yielded to the universal belief of its being truly a great Sea Serpent. I at once determined to fit out an expedition in pursuit of him, Capt. John G. Barnwell, commander of the Artillery Volun teers, to accompany roe with a squad of his Company. We procured a flat, and placed a tix-poundf r in it, with a full supply of round, sented his highness as being in that vicinity At dawn, we moved out into Broad River, \which is two miles Wide at this spot. It wr» hard to restrain the eagerness (If the party " tho general impression was, that We would find his “snakeship” a few mild* above, and there Whs a manifest inclination to move up there rtt mi'flo. The directions were, that the flotilla should extend itself across the stream, at equal distances, and float up with the tide, which was now at its yohng floodi Having given those directions for the governance of tho fleet, I opened the sails of the Eagle to the fresh North wind, and stretched down against the stream towards tho sea, fearing, like Gen. Scott, that I might possibly leave the enemy in the reari It was as yet too dark to see at any distance. I pursued this course for about three miles, when tho day was so far advanced that I could take a survey of all the barbeloWi Noth ing was to be seem The conclusion was, that the Serpent must be up the river.' We accord ingly “wore ship,” und stood up in that direc tion, after out' consorts. Proceeding a short distance, oneof the boat hands insisted that he saw something ahead. Wo strained ohr eyes in vain—nothing was before us but the wide water. Wo were running at about si* miles an hour.* I gavo the helm to one of my boat men, and proceeded to the bow With a glass, to look outi I had not been there for more than a minute when I beheld before Us, not two hun dred yards distant, the tfiost hideous looking monster that it is possible for the imagination to conceive. I shuddered at the thought that the Omnipotent had Created anything so Un earthly in its appearance) to my vision it indeed a ihuge serpent, seventy or eighty feet In lengthi “Here it is, whatwer it may be, di rectly before Us,” I exclaimed. The friends who were with me made Brush toward tha bow cf the boat, which sunk her bead so low in water that she refused tq*obey the helm, ran up in the wind, and we were very i pitched upon the “vornfint” in the most Unci moneoUs manner. The sheets were let go, am the party had to return to their formey places before we could extricate ourselves from what might have proved rather an unpleasant intro duction! I alone held my positidn en the bow of the boat, which enabled me to have a better vieWi When within about fifty yards, | had the indistinct glimpse of a fin, and directly af terwards I saw the figure change iu position, and I called out that it was—a Whale. After passing by, we saw another on our left. We had run between them. We immediately sig naled our consorts, and I pursued the St. Pat rick to assist in bringing her into “immediate action.” The eagqrqeso of our companions had been^too great, and they had not obeyed orders. In order to get a first sight of the Ser pent, they had pulled up stream, and now had to pull down against a strong tide. The Tuly finny obeyed the signal instantly, and came down to me. I requested the Captainto lie by the fish while 1 would go and endeavor to bring the St. Patrick into action. I came up along side tho St. Patrick, hitched on to her, andf placing my oarsmen on board, who were fresh, to assist at tite oars, and spreading, at the same time t the sails of the Eagle to the favoring breeze, we approached the fish rapidly. The St. Patrick was now within eighty yards of tho shoal pf Whales, for they were four—three large and a small one. Capt. Barnwell took a shot with a single ball, but it did not strike the fish; this he found very difficult to do t the fish changed their positions so frequently, that be- oro he could get hit gun to bear they had dis appeared. He took another shot with no better success. He now loaded his gtm with bail und canister. In the mean while, wlpn the action was going on, I had been busy in fixing up a harpoon that, at the last moment, I had put iu my boat, in case something of the kind might be wanted to assist in securing the Serpent, having attached thirty fathoms of cord to tho ’ line. I was compelled, for want of something better, to use the sprit of the Belie as a staff which was too unwieldy for efficient action. I took off my shoes, coat and vest. I now told Capt. Barnwell and my other friends, that 0* soon as he had taken another shot, I intended to harpoon one of the fish, regardless of all risk, and wished to knovi who would be willing to go with He immediately said he wotsld be helmsman, ahd two of the oarsmen volun teered. As$a$ft? Barnwell was about to shoot. I took my criw %ith me into the. Belle which was light and moved a short distance from the St. to observe raWre-adeurarely
