Tl,e Circulation of the News has in the first three ,,'u of its existence, far exceeded our most fan- Kidne expectations; and we are happy to hare it in * wcr to state, that it has naw a circulation larg■ our power than tlltU °f both tl,e other Dailies together. This is to us a gratifying fact, and is one that should not be disregarded by the advertising public. , gy The Washington correspondent of the New York Commercial Advertiser, speaking of tho death of Mr. Calhoun, says; His dissolution had been long expected, but was unquestionably hastened by the mental excitement occasioned by tho preparation of the remarkable speech delivered in the Senate on his behalf by his friend Judge Mason, on the 4th of March, and by tho part which he took in the debates of eeverul succeed ing days, and particularly by his replies to Senators Cusa and Foote, in which he defended himself with energy and vigor from the strictures of those Sena tors on his speech of the 4th inst. His attending physiciau was Dr. James Hall, of tliis place. By him and others Mr. Calhoun was fully advised of the danger of intellectual exertion, and he was solemnly wurned that if he attempted to take Benefit of the Orphans.—The proprietors of Pumaredc's Panorama of the Mississippi, now exhib ition at the Oglethorpe Hall, have kindly tendered nn exhibition of that beautiful painting this evening, for the benefit of St. John's Church Asylum, and Purish School. The Orphan Asylum was organized by some of the ladies of St John’s Church, in the year 1841, and has been sustained by contributions of members of that and Christ Church. Many orphans have been supported in the institution, and their wants, spiritual and temporal, have been carefully nttended to. Connected with the Pariah of St. John’s, is also a school, where several benevolent Indies impart in struction, gratuitously, to tho children of such per sons as are unable to procure it elsewhere. Both in stitutions have done great good, and are well wor thy of pntronnge.—- Com. It will be remembered that the Panorama will be exhibited this afternoon, a, 3 o'clock, at Oglethorpe Hall, when families and schools will have a fine op portunity to mnko the voyago of the Mississippi. jimscll'in accordance with them, perhaps because he was also made aware that there w as little hope of his ultimately recovering from the attack under which he was then suffering. The result has verified the sagacity of the physician, and the imprudence or the heroism of the patient. py We are obliged to omit our Religious Miscel lany this morning. Father Mathew.—The New Orleans papers atate that upwards of four thousand persona-have taken the pledge administered by Father Matthews aince his arrival in that city. Wrecking Pump.—Wo witnessed yesterday af ternoon at the wharf of Messrs. Brooks & Tupfer, the operations of a Steam Pump, which has lately been brought to our city, and was yesterday tested under the superintendence of Mr. Charles Wilson. The pump is intended to pump out wrecked vesseis, and is a beautiful piece of machinery. It performed handsomely yesterday and satisfied every one who be held it work, of its admirable adaptation for the pur pose for which it was invented. It pumps about thirty barrels of water per minute. The Steam Pump cost $2,600, and was manufactured by Mr. Worthington, of New York. We understand that it is owned by Messrs. Brooks St Tupfer, Brigham, Kelly St Co. and C. Wilson. There was a severe blow at Charleston on Tuesday, by which considerable damage was done to the shipping in port Service In the Churches. Mrs. Hollar Miss Cushman Stranger . .Mr. Couldock. The Werster Trial.—We have given up our space to-day to the closing proceedings of this pain fully interesting case. Few, remarks the Baltimore Sun, can contemplate this remarkable case, one of the most startling .in the annals of American juris prudence, without an appalling sense of the terrible consequences of crime. Our pity for the victim and the afflicted family deprived of his love and care, is almost totally absorbed by the extraordinary devel opments attending the detection of the murderer; and here again, the utterances of indignant reproach against the perpetrator of the fearful crime, are re strained by those sympathies of our pature which are uwakeued amidst the deep anguish in which nn ami able family is involved. Hut the law, that law without, which society would recede into barbarism, is above our sympathies. It exacts the penalty of life for life, on the conviction of guilt The jury in the present case have declared that the guilt is proved as charged in the indictment. The court approves the finding of the jury, and the law will take its course. Speaking of the verdict, the same paper saysThe combination of chances upon which alone we could predicate the innocence of the prisoner, would almost justify a conclusion that the formation of the world was the effect of chance. To admit tho vague possi bility of innocence in the face of such a consistent and methodical array of facts as that presented by the prosecution, would be to afflict society with pain ful uncertainty in relation to the force of evidence and the power of truth. A telegraphic despatch to tho Sun, says:— It is understood that the jury after going out on Satur day night, at first deliberated in silence l'or ten min utes, then voted on the question whether the remains were those of Dr. I’arkmnn.
