The following communication is from one of our

the several shoals, rocks islands, und dangers, not laid

Tho principal part of them 1 huve collected from
newspapers, others have bec.i communicated to me
by my friends, and some of them' arc from my own
observation. Thinking it would bo for tho greater
safety of navigators to have them published togeth

to ydu for that purpose, knowing how cheerfully
you publish nuy tiling that will promote the good of
commerce, and the safety of tho sailor.

NaTIONALOBBERVATORV, (
Washington. Fr.iinuAav IB, 1850. )
Sir:—Captain Parsons, of the ship Amity, of Boston,
reports that on the 22d of August last, being then
hound, from Manilla to Boston, he discovered and
beat through a passage among the Thousand Islands.
Although these islands arc at the eastern entrance
to tho Straits of Hunda, and, therefore in one ot the
great thoroughfares of the ocean, there is no accurate
survey of them, and the position assigned them oil
the charts is of doubtful accuracy. ,
Captain Parsons determined the lattitude ot n -
middle of tile passage by a meridian altitude ot
sun, and its longitude by bearings from the Mou -
Watcher. They are 5 deg. 26 tnin. 8., 10b deg.
For farther information concerning this important
discovery, I make the following extract o L
Parson’s letter to me, With the remark P -
P. is represented to me as a navigator of^ skill and

DovEn, Eno., Jan. 15.—“The masters of vessels
coming from the westward, nnd bound to the Thames
and Medway, are subject to heavy penalties if they do
not hoist tlie usual signal for a pilot on arriving off
Dungenesa, and kcop it displayed until the ship has
passed the South Buoy of the Brake, unless in the
meantime a duly qualified Cinque Ports pilot should
have come on board. Masters are particularly warn
ed to keep their jacks flying, although they may have
taken a boatman on board, and engaged his boat and
crew to procure a pilot from th6 shore. 1 In) pilot
cutters show a large green light during the night, and
display a flare up every 15 minutes. .
i»N. B.—Thero are now no licensed bontmfcn; then*
licenses huve been long since revoked, and the act au
thorising their being granted repealed. Masters
should avoid being imposed upon by any persons pre
tending to have licenses. . .
“Masters should, on no account, pay the shipping
money to the boat’s crew, but in every case to the
pilot only, or they will have to pay it twice. And it
has been decided in several cases, by the judge of the
County Court in Dover and Deal, that although the
boat’s crew may have received the shipping money,
or more, from the captain.it is still due to the pilot,
and from him to the boatmen.” . - m ,
Neuvitas, (Cuba) Feb. 8.—Ndt having observed
any notice of a new Lighthouse recently ereceted
near the entrance of this bay, i take the liberty o
calling your attention to the fact, as it will be of great
importance to vessel j sailing on the North elao oi
the island. A couple of English vessels lately arriv
ed here, having no knowledge of such a work, were
much confused, one of them lying oh and on lor Jo
hours, and that iu the vicinity of one oi the most
dangerous reel's on the whole coast. The Lighthouse
is built on point MaterniUos—long. 77 14, unci lut.

twenty mile distance. It is to be lighted lor the hrst
time, on the tirst of May. I believe it is the highest
in America, being 186 Spanish feet (or 171
height, cot ling nearly $200,000 when finished.
The lump and machinery to be used are trench, atu
were exhibited at the late Fair in Paris. It is now
