Dove*, Eno., Jan. 15.—“The masters of vessels coming from the westward, and bound to the Thames and Medway, are subject to heavy penalties if they do not hoist the usual signal for a pilot on arriving oif Dungeness, and keep it displayed until the ship has passed the South Buoy of the Bruke, unless in the meantime a duly qualified Cinque Ports pilot should have coinc on board. Masters are particularly warn ed to keep their jacks fly lug, although they may have taken a boatman on hoard, and engaged liie boat and crew to procure a pilot from the shore. The pilot cutters shown large green light daring the night, and display a Hare up every 15 minutes. . “N. B.—There are now no licensed boatmen ; their licenses have been long since revoked, slid the act au thorising their being granted repealed. Masters should avoid being imposed upon by nny persons pre tending to have licenses. ^ i,. “Masters should, on no account, pay the shipping money to the boat’s crew, but in every case to me pilot only, or they will have to pay it twice. A 1 lias been decided in several cases, by the judge ot t County Court in Dover and Deal, that although tin. boat’s crew may have received ™oney, or more, from the captain, it is still due to the pilot, and iVom him to the boatmen.” * an|tvni1 Neuvitas, (Cuba) Feb. 8.—Not having obsened any notice of a new Lighthouse recently .•receted near the entrance of this bay, I tnfo: the liberty nl railing your attention to the lact, as it will be of great importance to vessels soiling on the North side of the island. A couple of English vessels lately arriv ed here, having no knowledge of such a work, w ere much confused, one of them lying otf and on tor .11) hours, nnd that in the vicinity ot one of the most dangerous reefs on the whole const. I he Lighthouse is built on point Maternilios—long. 77 14, and .at. HI 40 of white limestone, and can easily bo seen at twenty mile distance. It is to he lighted for the first time, on the first of May. I believe it is the highest in America, being 186 Spanish feet (or 171 Eng.) ill height, costing nearly $200,000 when finished. The lamp nnd machinery to be used are French, nnd were exhibited at the late Fair in Paris. It is now being placed bv a French engineer. The whole struc ture is under the superintendence of Don Juan Com- pazano, Lieutenant-Colonel of the Royal Corps of Engineers. It is to be called ‘Colon,’ the name being placed in large bronze letters, facing the sea, about half-way up the tower, so as to be seen some distance. The lighthouse will be of great utility to mariners in saving life and property. The reef ^own here by the name of ‘Real de los Catalunes' , een a fatal spot. It runs nearly North a o 11Hfl twelve miles, extending out in some places a ' ea Sue from the beach. In December, 184b, the New Q r _ leans ship Creole, from Bordeaux to the f°r mer place, was lost here. The captain and more than j or . ty passengers perished. The same Winter the gp, brig Zedora, Br. brigs Maid ot Mona, Terpsichore and Achiever, were all lost within a mile of where the Creole struck. Point Maternillos is the starting point for veseels running down the channel. Tlih dangerous passage between Ginger and Wolf Keys on tha bank, ami Key Confinps on the Cuba Coast, will not be feared any more, for as soon as this is finished the Government commences another on Key Confines, to be similar in all respects to this on Mut- temillos.—Cor. of the Herald. Notice to Mariners.—The following list of lights erected, or being erected on the Island of Cuba, for which I am indebted to our Consul, Gen. Camphell, at Havana, please insert, as it will be useful for ship masters. Neuvitas, on St. Maternillos lat 21 39 30 N. Ion 77 11 from Greenwich. The light is 191 feet above the level of the sea. It is revolving; time of eclipse, one minute; will be lighted about the 1st of April Cienfuegos, Eastern side of the entrance,Fresnel Light of short eclipse, 8BJ feet high, will be lighted about June. Cape St Antonio, on the point of the Cape, 117 feet high, revolving, with eclipse of one minute; will be lighted about 1st April. GEO. W. BLUNT.
