A gold lump of sixty pounds.—A letter from a United States officer speaka of a lump of OS H,s. of which about. CO are geld and tho residue quartz, in which the metnl is imbed- od, having been found at Stockton. This is the luigest yet reported. We believe this lump started the rounds of the press weighing only 1C lbs. It hns improv ed by travel. Steamboat Explosion. We learn from the Wheeling Gazette, that the steamer Friendship mi her upward trip, stopped nt the Grave Creek wharf on Monday afternoon, and whilst attemp ting to make her way out into the stream, to re gain her progress, collapsed both lines of one ol her boilers. The steam blew out nt both ends of tho flues, doing but slight damage to the boat; but unfortunately one life, ut least, is known to have been lost, that of a boy nine or ten years ofnge, who was blown into the river, and either died by drowning, or was killed. A Truth for the Times.—It is a curious fact, in the gvammnr of politics, that when statesmen get into place, they beopnie often oblivious of their antecedents, but are Boldom forgetful of their relatives. [ Punch. (Hr* The secret United States agent dis patched to Hungary, was allowed $10 per dny while in service, besides travelling expenses. Rather fat wo should say. Suicide.—Henry II. whom wo noticed in mir police items as having made an attempt on bis life, in consequence of having been arrested fcir burglary, hung himself, lust night, in the po lice jnii of the First Municipality with a silk handkerchief- The offence with which Ileimer was charged is, we believe, the first that w as ever brought against him, and so grent was his sauce of shame that he flew to destruction rath er than he confronted with 'he damning eviden ces of his guilt. Such are the strange contradic tions of an ill-balanced mind. [IV. O. Delta, 10th. The Washington correspondent of the llaltimora Patriot says. “The committee on the Galphin claim arc sit ting every dny, nnd it is understood tlmt their scrutiny will be very thorough.
