Spring’* Entree.
TRANSLATED FOB THE HOME JOURNAL, FROM THE
GERMAN OF WILHELM MULLER.
Ilaste I open window, open henrt I
Quickly, O quickly I
Old winter seeks u passage out:
He fidgets anxiously about,
Up stairs and down with bustling air,
And picks his duds up here and there ;
Quickly, O quickly !
Haste I open window, open heart I
Quickly, O quickly ! ,
He’s spied young ripring before the door,
He knows his mudeap-prnnka of yore ;
To tweak his ear were sport, I trow,
Or pluck his reverend beurd of snow ;
Quickly, O quickly I
Haste I open window, open heart I
Quickly, O quickly I
Spring knocks already at the door—
Hark I ’tie his cheering voice once more 1
He knocks with all the force he muy
With his little meadow-flower boquet j
Quickly, O quickly I
Haste ! open window, open heart!
Quickly, O quickly I
And if you ure not prompt to hear,
He lias his train of servants rear ;
He’ll summon them to help hia will
And knock and beatinore loudly still;
Quickly, O quickly I
Haste I open window, open heart 1
Quickly, O quickly I
Ho I morning-breeze, his herald, view,
A puff’d cheeked boy of rosy hue :
He sounds till all tilings stir and ring,
F'or entrance to his master, Spring ;
Quickly, O quickly I
llust I open window, open heart I
Quiely, O quickly I
The brave night, sunshine, now appears
And breaks his way with golden spears;
While the soft llatterer, ttower-breuths, slinks
Through narrowest crevices and chinks
Quickly, O quickly !
awaiting the resurrection which slmll yet raise
them to a terrible use. All Sicily is plumed
full of these dragons’ teeth : they will spring
up some day and at some vesper hour. There
is a reality about all this that makes our foolish
northern and southern questions, tariff and Imnk
questions seem all but ridiculous, and our con
gressional spoutings about patriotism appear
like mere singe mouthing or puppet show.
Let those marl disunionists come here, contem
plate and weep over the funereal lute ot these
goodly lands, and then return to weep over their
follies and their sins.
We,—the men of the quarter-deck, servants
of the whole Republic, and proud of her live
ry, sailing under the flag of the Union, and re
ceiving from men of all lands the honor which
the prestige of our national glory commands,—
we, separated by distance f.om the petty
feuds and from sight of the attenuated divid
ing lines of party—we, looking down from the
“crow’s nest” upon all these littlenesses, loel
towards reckless agita'ors sentiments that sug
gest the rope’s end, thf- yard-arm, and a stop
page of grog! Iam willing that politicians
who occasionally discuss our mode ot discipline
in the Navy, should have the benefit of our views
concerning the discipline when they behave
wickedly.
This being the fruit season, the town is fill
ed with country people from the Calabrian
shore, and some from the region of Mount Et
na. They are a fine looking race, and far su
perior, in appearance, to ihe Neapolitan. Their
strange costumes are highly picturesque, and
are worn with a grace that shames the costly
fancy ball attempts at imitation that you see at
Newport and Saratoga. Good reason why!
they have had centuries ot practice in
wearing them; here “fashion” knuckles t.f
custom,” and tho result is not a trifle superior
to tho awkward tivc-years-behind-the-age ward
robes of our rustic imitators of city haut ton.
An old innn offered me for sale a remnant of
former grandeur, which its owner, he said, was
willing to part with, being induced to this
willingness by a near prospect of starvation-as
the alternative. The old man took me to a di
lapidated house ia the suburbs, and up a dirty
and broken stair-case into a largo room, in the
midst of which there sat an old worn in, crouch-
ed over a few coals in a brazier, trying' to warm
her withered hands. Around were strewed old
pieces of furniture, richly carved and gilded,
while numerous line old paintings hung upon the
w>ills. The article I was brought there to pur
chase, was a vcllow double damask bed canopy
—a marvellously rich looking affair, and in ex
cellent preservation. She was a lady-like old
dame, old and ugly, but with grand manners
JShft told me that fifty : eight years ago that dam
ask Canopy had been her bridal present. Then
she was doubtless beautiful, and surrounded
with elegant luxury; now, through'rebellions and
their consequent confiscations and decapita
tions. she found herself the last of her name,
brought to a garret, a handful of coals, and tho
necessity of selling to a stranger (she was too
proud to sell to a Messinese,) this bridal cano
py, the most cherished remnant of her youth,
and love, and wealth. Youth, and love, and
plenty! the thoughts of those which the dame’s
story brought up, so discordant were they with
he realities there, that they seemed like spec-
res, more hnrribla than the sight of that high
orn, lowly brought, toothless, haggard crone,
who sat there, the very impersonation of ruin,
Alas! Alas! Yours ever.

Political Condition of Italy.
Here ure, says the Newark Daily Advertiser,
the thoughts and emotions of a true American
heart in tho midst of the sights and sounds of
poor emasculated Italy. It wero well for us
who live in this privileged Zidoniaof the earth,
surrounded with plenty and in the full enjoy
ment of all the blessings of freedom, to con
template the spectacle presented by our corres
pondent—a gallant, oflicer of the noble service
he illustrates—and prolit by its admonitions
Surely no American freeman, worthy the name,
can witness the half frantic manifestations of
passionate regard for the mere symbols of lib
erty, here so touchingly exhibited, without
•quicker vibration at the heart:
Correspondence of the Newark Daily Advertiser.
U S. Ship Cumberland, \
Messina, March 10r.ii, 1850. $
The other day wus the King’s birth-day, and
by way of commencing the festivities they shot
one poor fellow in whose possession a musket
bad been found, the day before. Summary
justice ibis! They make quick work with one
armed man, hut not so with a large body of
armed people—witness Ferdinand at llomo.
" hen Garrilmldi came out with his undisciplin
ed four thousand, against thirty thousand Nea
politan regulars: why the blood thirsty bom
bardier and coward rode to death two horses
in scampering back 11 Naples ! What waste
of honest brutes to save tho life of such a beast
as King Ferdinand ! He will need to l ido to
death more horses still, or lose his anointed head,
tor never was hatred more intense than that
which pervades nine-tenths of his wretched
subjects and victims. 1 have witnessed this feel-
mgut Naples us well us here. Down in the dust
as the people are, they still gnash their teeth on
their oppressors with an immortal hatred. Tons
they fondly look for aid. Ah, it is pitiful to hear
'heir complaints, to receive their embraces,
bestowed when no Neapolitan spy is near,—
to sje them kiss our flag, our epuuletts, and
even our buttons.
They bide their time, patiently, not in hope
but in thirst for vengeance. Remnants of old'
and noble families, of which the flower has
been cut off und their rich possessions confisca
ted, for the crime of emulating the heroes who
founded our republic, still devote the lives that
are left to them to nursing the thought of libor-
Calico Soireesinre fashionable in some of the
manufacturing towns of Massachusetts. They
are got up for the benefit and improvement of
the operatives at thetnills, and are attended by
all classes.—They receive their name from the
ladies appearing in calico dresses.
