I’ll sing thee a song of a dear little hcapt That belonged to a dear Jittle maid. And I'll tell thee in rhyme of the curious part That this" little heart once played— For the little maid asked her, hqart-ona day, As it beat 'noath-her bosom of snow, In faith, little trembler would’st time Away t But the little heart answered—Np I , . i - And theye came on eld man with furrowed check, With his head so bald and gray, And he jingled his gold, and thus did seek To intice this heart away. Ha ! ha I says the little maid, with a laugh, Old man with thy head of snow, Dost think that 1 care for thy yellow chaff 1 But the little heart answered—No 1 And there came one with a titled name, And a string of JL/s, M’s and D's, And he said that his brfeast was consumed by a flame That nought but this heart could appease. So the little maid asked her heart again, . Prythee, little one, wilt thou go 1 llut the heart was vexed, and- would scarcely deign To answer her—No I no I no I But there come a youth, gay, careless and fair. And he stood-'meath a broad tree near, And he «mg so softly and sweetly an air, That me maiden came close to hear. And he kispod her andsmiled as shepressed her heart With her hands, it fluttered so And she blushed and sighed as sho bade him depart, But her little heart add—No f ho I Sente and SensaUon.^The greyhound runs by eyesight oeiy, and this we Observe as a fact. The carrier pigeon flies his two hundred and fifty miles horhoWafd, by eyesight, viz., from point to point of objects which he fibs mrrrked; but this is only our conjecture. The -fierce dragon-fly, with twelve thousand lenses in his eyes, darts from angle to angle with' the ra pidity of a flashing sword, add as Icttpidly darts back—not turning in the air, hut with’ a clash reversing the action of his four wings—the only known creature that possesses this faeqUy. IIfs sight then, both forward and backwards, 1 must he proportionately rapid with his' wings, and instantaneously calculating the distance of objects, or he would dash himself to pieces. But in what conformation of his eye does this consist ? No onfe can answer. A cloud of ten thousand gnats dunces up and down iri the sun, the gnats being so close together that you can scare jly see the minutest interval between them, yet no one knocks another heacilong up on the grass, or breaks a leg cr a 1 wing, long and delicate ps- these are. Suddenly, amid your admiration of this matchless douce, a pe- culiarTiigh-shouldcred vicious gnat, with long, pale, pendant tiose, darts out tff the rising and falling cloud,, and . settling on your cheek inserts/a poisonous sting. What possessed this little wretch to do this 7 Did he smell your Wood in tho vnazy dance 7 No one knows. A four horse-coach comes suddenly upon a flock of goesoona narrow road, and drives straight through the middle of them. A goose was never yet fairly run over, nor a duck. ‘They are under the very wheels and hoofs and yet, somehow, they contvive to flap and Waddle safely off. Habitually ffiupid, heavy and in dolent, they are, nevertheless, equal to any emergency. Why' does the lonely woodpecker when he descends his tree-and goes to drink, stop several times on his way,—listen and look round—before he takes his draught? Noono knows. How is it that the species of out, which taken in battle by other ants to be made slaves, should he the black or negro ant? No ■One knows.— The Poor Artist. .lohn Buchanan has decided in Now Orleans, that, tlie holder of an office, the constitutional term of which is four years, cannot be removed by the governor, but is etititled,_l»-the office for •the constitutional term. . At, his old Pranks —Old Whiley, yesterday had hfs war spirit -cdnsiderably revived. We oio informed, that as the fireman’s procession passed wjth its martial music, his rejoicing knew no restraint, and that, with mano apd tail erect, heplunged into the midst of them, and spread dismay and confusion along the whole line.—Republic. Romance and Reality.—Thu Trenton Ga- ^ette has received a letter from a printer in lonolulu who went to California in Col. Ste- v< mson s regiment, in which ho remained till the war wns over, then toik to publishing tlieCali- 0 nun«, abandoned that business, sailed for Ohi- !! a ’ was wreckedat the Honolulu, was taken into avor by a chief, married his daughter and is now one of the first citizens of the village. He perfectly contented with his situation, nnd 19 braking of agitaliug tho project oftbean- nekut. o i of his Hawaiin majesty's dominions to the United States.” Maiuuagk in New, York.—Maj. Noah thus hits at the recent legislation of tho N.” Y. general assembly on the subject of marriugo and divorce! Upon the whole, considering the amendments which have already been introduced in tho Iuwb relating to the marriage contract, and the. proposals for a further legislative reluxation of the conjugal ties brought before the Assembly the ether day, wo think it is time that tlie rights and duties of matrimony should bo more, dis tinctly defined, and the marriugo ceremony it self altered in conformity with tho prevailing tasto on the subject. Wo'are aware that no le gal nocessiry exists for the actual and precise observance of this ceremony ; but still, by hun dreds of poo'ple who yet think in an old fash ioned manner, it is regarded os an exponent of the requirements of wedlock, when in fact its tenets are obsolete, and die principles it incul cates are fae behind tho ago. Since legislation is determined to taken mini’s domestic relation under its charge, let the thing be done effectually, and let as understand exactly what a man may expect and what may be expected from him in. a matrimonial way ; for in the present confu sion on the subject, a careless man who does not keep a sharp look-out on the proceedings - of the Legislature, may some fine morning find hint self minus a Wife Without exactly knowing the cause. The “divinity” that in nudient did ‘‘hedge a king” was harmless in com-, parison with ilio “legality that dotii hedge n woman” now-a-days. Strong points for di vorce stick out in every direction, and it will be about as safe to fall in love with a “bristly porcupine” ns with a feminino surrounded by »uch protection and ai med with such powers as it is now intended to invost her willinll. A man has at present absolutely no control over his wifo’s property, ho voice in its dispo sal, no uheck upon her actions. The facilities for obtaining divorce are, one would think, numerous enough, yet ilia Legislature is-phout increasing them by making drunkenness and insanity sudibient causes. A woman wishing to be ‘Viff wi’ the old love and on wl’ the new,” can, in many cases, by her. conduct drive her husband to the vice which will justify her fli- vorce from him; or if he cannot bo driven to the bottle, she can at any rate drive him mad, which will answer the same purpose. Now, instead of this patchwork legislation, would it not bo better to institute broader and more radical improvements, which would cov er the whole ground, and prevent wedded life from degenerating into one of continual litiga tion? This could perhaps be done best by re cognizing various ordors of marriage suitable to the capacities and dcqires of every hymenial aspirant. I'irst, we could have experimental matrimony, or marriage on trial, terminable or aonfirmable'<at the option o£ either party as it might prove a failure or success. This would exactly meet tho case of tho very many who “marry in haste tto repent at leisure.” There might bo also marriage conditional, to cease on any contingency taking place, such, as tho return of a former lover, the mal apropos interference of a New passion on either part, &c. &c.; or marriage provisional, by which the husband might stipulate for certain privileges—as an occasional spi’ee, &c.—without four of a ^uit of divorce. Then why not marriage for a term of months or {years?—'probably more appropriate to the exigencies of the time than any other. We throw out these hints for consideration. If they are acted upon, a sort of certainty wjll at least be given to matrimony, and when people get married they will know exactly what they are about. Heroism, bf a Southern Lady.—Tho police of Philadelphia, on Saturday, arrested a large and athletic negro, known as "Black Bill,” for entering a few weeks ago, the dwelling of Mrs. Revoudt, in Aroh street, nnd robbing it of a quantity of jewelry and ciothing, and $26 in money. The Philadelphia Suu says! The only person in. the house at the' time, was Miss Sarah ’Anh Drane, a young Indy from Maryland or Virginia, who resided with Mrs. R. The cournge which she exhibited in an encounter'with the thief, justly entitles her to tlie heroic name of Jngello of Philadelphia.' She is an hontir to her sex and tho rest of man kind, and Maryland oi Virginia should feel proud of such a brave fair one. Whilst seated in tho parlor, enjoying the pleasure of profound retirement, a slight noise overhead arrested her attention. She picked up a lamp and ascended to tlie bed-chamber, and on opening tho door discovered‘tho sable thief in the act of getting out of the window. Sh'e dashed after him, and holding the lamp close to his face, satisfied herself that ho was black by nature. He was-go far out of the Window that she could not arrest him. He descended the arbor ns quickly as he could, and she, retracing her steps, passed hurriedly down the stairs,'opened the door loading to the yard, and caught him in a recess near the fence. He was powerful, she, though week, was courageous. She caught him by tho wool of'tho head, and succoeded almost in pulling him down. It was a terrific struggle ; he had tlie clothes on his arm; held on to them with great pertinacity, not knowing, perhaps, at the time, that they acted,'fortu nately too, as a shield for hi* weaker antagonist. Sho screamed for assistance, holding on all tho while to tho woolly fabric, that stuck out liko a brush heap. At lust he drew a knife and made a desperate plunge at her, but tho weapon entered and cut the cloth ing which overloaded his arm. Still she held ori, and called more loudly for assistance, but no one came. Tlie front door of the house was locked, which prevented ingress there, and the yard could not be found readily from the sound of hor vtjee. He made one or two more In effectual thrusts nt her with the weapon. The fourth thrust had some effect. The blade passed entirely through her dress, just below eha breast, entered the skin, and cut cleat down to tho groin. At tho’samo moment she uttered a most heart-rending shriok, the wool gave way, and the desperato and cowardly villain bounded over the fence, leaving behind him the stolen clothing, which, on a subsequent examination, were found to be more or jess cut. The thief escaped ; the courageous young la dy hastened to the house, still holding on to tho handful of wool, and becoming exceed ingly nervous from tho desperate adventure, was taken ill, and remained quito sick for sev eral days. The burglar tlten escaped, leaving, the clothes behind him, but keeping posossion of $20 in gold coin, and quantity of jpwclrv On Saturday, lioWevor, the vigilant officers ferreted out "Black Bill,” and took him into custody. He was taken to the residence of Mrs Revoudt, and Miss Drain sunt for to recog nise him. The moment she laid eyes upon him, sho shrank back with evidorit horror, and fixclaimed—“My God, -don't Itririg him near* mo I—ho is the.nmn 1” Asa matter of course, “Bill” professed big innocence, hut in default of $2000 bail was committed to prison by Al derman Mitchell to await a further hearing, when further developments are expected to bo made. ESP Tho government of India has, at the suggestion of tho Agri-Horticifliiunl Society of India, announced that nprize of fc'ivo Thous and Rupees shall bo given for an improved cotton cleaning machine, (unrestricted by any particular mechanical principle) such as, in tlie opinion of the government, shall have fully attained the principal objects described by the society, namely, “trt bo so perfect in its action in separating cotton wool fVottt the scod, and possessing such qualities of expedition,- sim plicity and comparative cheapness, as to render it likely to como into, practical useand the Agri-Horticultura! Society have determined to adjudge its Gold’ Medal for tho same object. CgP The entire sum of money raised by tho churches of Great Britain for missionary pur poses, is about $1,750,000; by those of Ameri ca, $750,600? making together, $2,500,000; and yet this sum scarcely 1 equals the anuual gifts at Kaloe’s temple, Calcutta. “Sorrows Come not Single Spies.'’.—On Tuesday last we recorded the deutb of .Mrs. Charlotte Hunt, a young wife and mother in this city. On the following day her little ono —an. only child—ru:as token away, and last evening, evon before hor remains were commit ted to the earth her husband was also smitten by the handof death—the floilver and the stalks being thus withered at a single blow. These three constituted the whole family—and tliCy are to bo carried to their long home to gether—and almost laid in one and the' same grave. There is something deeply uflllcting in such a bereavement as this—when the Destroy er; in hisi triumphant, but desolating march, after having stricken tho guardian ungel from the family circle pausetfi not, until he hath swept every member of it from their pleasant hearthstone-into tlie tomb.
