Secretory Clayton tftlk* ef retiring to his
, ‘ in on account of his health, as soon as the
*“ A with Great Britan, concerning the Nica-
’^jua canal and British jurisdiction, shall be
ratified- .
The Now York Express thus chronicles the
ls3 t sumors Respecting the changes in the cabi-
” C ; S , That all four Secretaries—Messrs. Clay-
,,n Crawford, Preston and Meredith—will
resign within a few days.
oj That the.r successors will come most pro-
hnhlv in this order :
For Secretary of State—Mr. Crittenden or
Mr. Bell, of Tonn.
For Secretary of the Treasury—Mr. Geo.
p,„„, of Maine.
For Secretary of Wtr-Mr. Gentry, of
Secretary of the Navy—Mr. Thomas
Butler King, of Georgia.
These are all good and able men, and men
who cannot but command the confidence and
respect of the whole country. A better Cab-
hinet it would bo hard to constitute—if we are,
iuilecd, to part with the present one, of which,
we presume, thero is now little or no doubt.
The Cotton Chop.—Atetttsrin the Charles-
on Courier dated Beaufort District, April 14th,
snys—
This morning fr >st was seen os low down as
Beaufort District, and I suppose it must have
been heavy enough, in the upper Districts, to
do injury. In this region, however, we have
nothing to fear from frost. Our Cotton lias
been planted, and, in consequence of the heavy
and continued rains, the seed has rotted in the
ground. Many planters are now digging up
und replanting. Indeed, the wet and cold
Spring will cause Cotton to be later this year
than last, and the probability is the crop will be
shorter. ,
Cotton Seed is in great demand, as planters
did not provide against the eontingenevof plan
ting their crops over, rendered necessary by
the wet weather. '
A new Invention.;—Mr. Clark Mills,
now in Washington,has invented a nay/ furnace
for which he is about to take out a patent. If
nil that is said of it be true, it will be of exten
sive and important uso in the arts and in navi
gation, and Will not fail richly to rewaril the
genius of the inventor. It is upon the princi
ple of an air-tight stove. A few days ago, Mr.
Mills melted sixteen pounds weight of brass
und copper with three-fourths of a cord of com
mon pine wood and' the charcoal left was worth
ns much as the wood. lie will apply it to steam
bunts and supersede the necessity of chimneys.
Thus, he will settle the Wheelirfg bridge case,
which has beert so much controverted.
13P I do not remember to have previously
mentioned that privnto intelligence has be«n
received Very-recently from New Mexico, show
ing that the people are about tp provide for the
formatiqn of astutagovernmeru. A regularly or
ganized convention will soon be assembled,as in
California, the object of which will be to adopt'
a constitution, and prepare in proper form, an
application to Congress for admission as n
stare. It,is stated there can ho no reasonable
duubt that this convention will establish 'a per
petual prohibition of slavery within the borders
of New Mexico, just as the people of California
have done for their state.—Cor. N. Y. Even
ing Post.
