Washington, April 13,1850
Gentlemen :—Your communication of the
0 f Match, and the Gold Chain and
Watch, accompanying it, have been safely de-
livered to mo bv Mr. John II. Bncon.
Aot having tho pleasure of a personal ncquain-
(unCC w ith your fellow-citizen Mr. Bgleston, I
, im y be allowed to regard his elegant and val-
inble present of the Chain ns a testimonial of
his approbation of my efforts to uphold and
petuate the Union of the Slates. r 1 "
per
I shall
lnose no time in communicating to him mysonse
ofhis kindness, and of signifying tho value
which I attach to his favorable opinions.
. But I have-an obligation to ncknowledg
v,nt also, gentlemen, for the beautiful Watch
which you huve appended to Mr. Bgleston’s
I accept this from your hands ns Sons of
A’uw England, and Merchants of New York,
with grateful respect. Wejare personally kuoiyn
to one another, and I cannot desire u measure
of regard from any of you greater than that
which I entertain for you, each and all.
The evonts of life have drawn you from the
land of our common origin to the great com
mercial metropolis of tho country. You are
merchants, and under the flag of the Union you
have prosecuted an extensive and useful iu-
tercourso with mostof the civilized world. At
lust you have seen our own country stretch
from’sea to sen, and* ft new highway opened
across the Continent, from us to our fellow cit
izens on the shores of the racilic.* Far as they
have gone they are yet within tho protection ol
the Union,' and ready I doubt not, to join us
all, in its defenco and support. They are pur
ge new and an absorbing interest. While
their Eastern brethren continue to be enguged in
agricaltura, manufactures, commerce, naviga
tion and the fisheries, they are exploring a re
gion whose wealth surpasses fiction. They
ire gathering up treasure, in a manner and in
idegree hitherto unknown, at the feet of incc-
ressible mountains and along those streams,

Over i hem and over us, stands the broad arm
of tho Union, and long may it stand, as firm
as the arches of heaven, and as beautiful as
the bow which is set in the clouds.
am, gentlemen, with very true regard, your
obliged friend, and ob’t. servt,
DANIEL WEBSTER.
J'ropiua qua; Maribus.—It is curious, and
worthy of a passing remark, too, that women
have achieved success in every deparmonl of
fiction but humor. They deal, no doubt, in
ly, humorous touches often enough; but the
bread provinces of that great domain are
almost uninvaded by them ; beyond the out
skirts, and open borders, they have never at-
l mpted to puss.—Compare Miss Austen, Miss
Ferriar, and Miss, Edgeworth, with the lusty
mirth und riotous humor of Shukspenre, Ru-
bolnis, Butler, Fielding, Swilt, Smollett, or
Dickens and Thackeray. It is like comparing
a quiet sm''le with the “inextinguishable laugh
er,of the Homeric gods !—So also on the
lage—there have been c imic. actresses of in-
utnparable merit ; lively, pleasant.,, humoro us
\vomen,gladdening tho scene with their airy
brightness und gladsome presence; but they
have no comic energy. There has been no fe-
nle Munden, Liston, Mathews, or Keeiev.—
Edinburgh Review.
There is something so exquisitely’ delicate
and sensitive in a right-minded woman, that
kite will always restrain any impulse to cross
ness, and wo have no doubt many rich and
rare out-burst of merriment and fun has been re
stricted to very tamoness by the apprehension of
ver-stepping the modesty of nature.”

Money Matters, Trade, «&c*
NEW-YORK, April.—There is a good deal of ac
tivity in the Money market, nnd the demand is sensi
bly increasing. Loans on stocks ure made at 6 per
cent; but there is n good deal of good paper selling
at 1 per cent a month, and more offered than there is
money to buy them with, even at that rate.
Dry goods are getting decidedly heavy, and the
market is tending downwards. The late large arriv
als have completely glutted ^he market. Trade is
light, which, added with the gloomy prospects from
the West, makes tilings in the prospective look rather
dark.
