Suppose you have to pionouuce on the guilt or innocence ol n gentleman accused of felony; you will natu rally doubt whether uny gentleman would com mit such an offence ; accordingly! however strong the testimony against him, you will per haps, acquit him. The evidence of your own senses is at least creditablo as timt of the wit ness: if, therefore, your eyesight convinces you that the prisoner i-< a well dressed person, you have a right to presume his respectability, and it is for you to say whether a respectable person would be likely to be guilty ot the crime im puted to him. [From the New York Tribune.] On the death of a Child. BY MISS ALICE CABBY. Vain it were to f ay that night Folds away the morrow— O you cannot see the light Through this aching sorrow I Beauty from your eyes is borne, Brother, sister, weeping ; But the cherub boy you morun Is not dead, but sleeping. Folded are the dimpled arms From your soft caressing; Yet our God in darker forms Sendeth down his blessing. Death, a breeze from heaven astray, Still, with wing the fleetest, Drifts the lovely flowers away, Where hope clings the sweetest. ex “W )le » with sheep slL-aling. lhu deciaionjesU Dittlo?ue9i by chat;lea Northend, A. M. with you, first whether that individual is a rag amuffin ; and secondly, how far it is to be sup posed that a man of that description would steal u sheep. Of course,us has before been said, you will always be guided by the evidence, but then, whether the matter is trustworthy or not, is a matteT for your private consideration. You may believe it., if you choose, or you may dis believe it; and whether, gentlemen of the jury, you will believe it or disbelieve it, will depend on the constitution ofyour minds. If your mitnjs ure so constituted thut you wish to find the pris oner guilty, why then, very likely, you will dis believe it. You are to free your minds from all passion and prejudice, if you can; nnd in that case your judgement will be unbiassed, but if you cannot, you will return a verdict accord ingly. Itis not, strictly speaking, for you to consider what will be the effect of your verdict; but if such a consideration should occur to you and you cannot help attending to it,that verdict will he influenced by it toacertain extent. You are probably aware that when you retire, you will be lucked up until you contrive to agree. You may arrive at unanimity by fair discussion, or by some of you staivingout the others, or by tossing up ; and your conclusion, by whichev er of these processes arrived at, will be more or less in accordance with your oaths. Your verdict may be right, it is hoped it will; it may be wrong—it is to be hoped it will not. At all events, gentlemen of the jury, you will come to some conclusion or other, unless it should so happen that you should separate without coming, to any. Strong to change, but not destroy, While the paley winglets Veil the forehead of the boy, Bright with golden ringlets. Faith, though dumb at the great loss Which hath made you weepers, Closer, closer clasps the Cross Down among the sleepers. And though wild your anguish be. And your hearts all broken, “Suffer them to come to me,” Hath been sweetly spoken. Women's Rights.—A number of women of Ohio, dissatisfied with the present position of their sex, have signed a call for a convention nf females to meet in the town of Salem, Ohio. The purpose of the convention, is stated to be, in the words of the signers, to concert meas ures to secure to all persons the recognition of equal rights, nnd the extension of the privi leges of government, without distinction of sex or color: To enquire into the origin and de sign of the rights of humanity, whether they are coeval with tho human race, of universal heritage, and inalienable, or merely conven tional, held by suffi-rance, dependent for a basis on locution, position, color, and sex, &c. When old Mrs. Stallings read the above par agraph, she dropped the paper in her lap, and throwing up her hands, fell buck in her chair, and exclaimed, “ Goodness gracious me! what upon aiith is human nater coinin’ too, I won der!” She has not yet been able to solve tho problem. Sudden Death—Mrs. Elizabeth Norris, wife of Mr. Echelbert D. Norris, formerly of Bal timore, died suddenly at Cincinnati, on Sunday- evening, 7th instant, during divine service, in the Methodist -Protestant Church, on Sixth street. She attended service in the morning and af ternoon, partook of the Sacrament, and express ed herself to several of her f riends as feeling in better health that day than for some time past. When the hour for the evening service arrived, she, in company with her husband and sever al members of the family, repaired again to the church. During the exercises she was ob served to be very weak, and on her friends ap proaching her, she was found to be dying, and in a few minutes her soul had parted from her body. Truly, “in the midst of life we are in death.” TEA CULTIVATION IN THE U. STATES. H AVING received a small supply of TEA NUTS, collected at great expense of money and labor, in the middle districts of China, from the most cele brated Tea Plantations of the Empire, I am prepared to fulfil my engagements by accommodating tlio pub lic with a share of the Nuts received. My mniu ob ject in to plant and cultivate; but as 1 am quite cer tain that I have obtained, after the labor of three years, the best quality of Tea Nuts, I am disposed to meet the wishes of the public, and to share them with otltere.—TeaNuts gathered in the neighborhood of Canton are scarcely worth cultivating, on account of the inferior quality of the Tea. It is obviously the interest of the planter to submit to an increased ex pense, to secure a superior quality of Tea Nut, in es tablishing a Tea Plantation, whether large or small. In prosecuting this arduous undertaking, I am fit fact acting as an agent for the benefit of the public, Neither the State, the public, or any individual, has ever extended to me the aid of a single cent. For convenience and security, the Nuts will be packed in tin boxes, and forwarded fromjGreenville, S. C., by such conveyance and to such address as the purchaser may direct, to any part of the U. States. TEA PLANTS—now on their passage from China, selected with a single eye to quality, by a gentleman oflarge experience in horticultural pursuits, and pr- hnpa better acquainted with the character of the Tea Plant, than any person in Europe or America—vwill also be shared with those desirous of, obtaining a small supply. i A specification of the soli best adapted to the growth of the plant, the mode of planting, cultivating, dtc. For sale by mar 4 COLLINS A BULKLEY, Marriage Without Love.—The worst of all mockeries is marriage without love ; a yoking together, but not a union ; bondage without a bond ; a multiplication of all the burdens of life for both parlies; and like tho offering of a whole family of false gods whose demands are never satisfied, because, whatever the sacrifice, there is no atonement. Too many matches are made in confusion, they have no faith in their com position, and, therefore, an abundance of sin. There may he sincerity enough in them, but too often it is sincere selfishness. A. female, in male attire, joined a Califor' nia company, and on Suturday last went aboard the Jewess with the company. She was not de tected until the boat was almost ready to start, " lien she was discovered, and proved to be the wife of one of the company. She had expostu- inted with her husband against going, but he be ing determined, she resolved to accompany him and share his fortune. The husband, not wil- Ji'g that his wife should be exposed to the dan gers nnd trials of such n journey determined to find an El Dorado nearer home than on the shores of the Pacific.—Cin. Commcial. Gold.—The Grand River Eagle is certain that gold exists in lurge quantities on the Yel low Stone River. An individual in Chicago has deposited $3000 for the equipment of a company to go and dig for it. Advantages of Advertising.—A very sensible exchange has the following philo sophical remnrks on this subject:— Modesty is said to be tho mark of genius. We shall not gainsay it. But however ingeni ous or ingenuous it may be to shrink from the public gaze, a man who undertakes to live by trade or manufactures may starve by it. Many have starved, or at least been sorely pinched by it.—Many a man has bought a large stock of goods, and rented a fine store, and then won dered why his business did not prosper. It was owing to this:—People now get their infor mation by reading newspapers. Whoever keeps himself most before tho public, in the Newspapers, gets the most business, doubles his money oftenest,&c. It can't bo otherwise. The few who know this are fortunate.—You should spend as much in advertising as in rent. SPIRIT GAS OR BURNING FLUID.—A1 so, Spirit Gas Lamps. For sale by J. A. MAYER.
