MORNING NEWS. The advent of Spring Here is a trifle of poetry, full of fragrance, and as smiling as the glad sunshine of May The flowers are nature’s jewels, with whose wealth •She decks her summer beauty : Primrose sweet, With hlossoms of pure gold ; enchanting rose, That like a virgin queen, salutes the sun, Dew-diaderuued; the perfumed pink that studs The earth with clustering ruby ; hyacinth, The hue of venus’ tresses ; myrtle green, That maidens think a charm for constant love, And give night kisses to it, and so dream ; Fair lily 1 woman’s emblem, and oft twined Round bosoms, where its silver is unseen— .Such is her whiteness; downcast violet, Turning away its sweet head from the wind, As she her delicate and startled ear From pussion’s tale. The Mysteriously Found Body in Philadel phia.—The Ledger says that probabilities as to the body found built up in tho wall of houses Nos 56 and 58 Walnut streets, while tearing them down, are, that while the house was vacated by the Bullock family during the Rev olutionary war, and when the city was in the possession of the British, ono of their officers died, and was thus obscurely buried for the sake of convenience. The only survivor of the Bullock family thinks this the case. The Wheat. Crop.—The newspaper repres* emotions respecting the forthcoming when 1 crop, in Ohio, western New York, Indiana, Michigan, and ull the States bordering on the lakes, are uniformly favorable, unless we ex cept the northern portion of Illinois, where the winter wheat has received considerable injury from the open weather. In Michigan it is pre dicted that, if nothing occurs to change the present prospects, the crop will be double that of last yea*. As to this State, the Buffalo Commercial Adveniser says, reports from all the farming sections give flattering accounts of the prospects for a large crop.—N. Y. Jour nal of Commerce. Tjie Case of Du. Webster.—The follow ing paragraph strikes us as peculialy applica ble to those persons out of Massachusetts, who are so much interested in the fate of Dr. Web ster, now under sentence of death for the murder of Mu. Parkman : “A Sensible Man.—A distinguished gentle man of the Smto of New-Jersey being asked to sign a petition for the pardon of Professor Webster, said that he had so much business of his own to attend to that he had no time to at tend to that of the Governor of Massachusetts'” FOSTER’S HAND BOOK ot European Lit A rnmre, for the use ol'Schools and private fami lies, by Mrs. Foster. Dixon & Co’s. Con fectionery. mar 11 The Upper Regions of the Atmosphere. Mr. J. Wise, the aeronaut, has recently published a work entitled “History and Practice of Aer onautics,” from which the Philadelphia Inqui rer derives the following interesting facts: “In one place he makes us acquainted with the still, quiet of the heavens, thus:—a bee was let off (ut 8,003 feet,) which flew away, makine a humming noise. At the altitude of 11000 feet, a great linnet was liberated which flew away directly but soon feeling itself abandon ed in the midst of an unknown ocean, it re turned and settled on the stays of the balloon; then mustering fresh courage, it took a second flight and dashed downwards to the earth, de scribing a tortuous yet perpendicular track. A pigeon let off under similar circumstances af forded a more curious spectacle. Placed on the edge of the car, it rested awhile, measuring ■ as it were,-the breadth of that unexplored sea, which it designed to traverse; now, launch ing into the abyss, it fluttered irregularly and seemed at first to try its wings on the thin ele ment, till alter a few strokes ; t gained more confidence, and whirling in large circles or spirals, likethe bird ot prey, it precipitnted itself into the mass of extended clouds, where it was lost from sight. In one of liis ascents, he held a distinct conversation in the cloud with Mr. Paulin, who ascended with another balloon about the same time.” Anonymous Letters.—The Boston Tran script says, that the Governor, tho Mayor of the City, and others in authorty in the State and City, are in the daily receipt of anonymous epistles relating to the recent trial ol Dr. Web ster, from various sections of the country ;und adds:—- “Persons at a distance can have butlittleidea of the unanimity of sentiment here, or of the loyalty of our population to their constituted rulers, to think that all the methods they adopt to tiirn the current of popular feeling, or to pre vent the execution of our luws, will, have the slightest effect upon those who are the sworn ministers of justice, in the State of Massachu setts.” Another fire fracas occured in Philadel phia on Friday night at the burning of a rope walk in Southwalk. The Moyamensing Hose Company with several hundred boys were flrod upon by a dozen young men. They re turned the fire, but afterward retreated and end ed the fight without serious injury, though it is said to have been a desperate affair. TEA CULTIVATION IN THE t. STATES. H AVING received a small supply of TEA NUTS, collected at great expense of money und labor, in the middle districts of China, from the most cele brated Tea Plantations of the Empire, I am prepared to fulfil my engagements by accommodating tile pub lic with a share of the Nuts received. My main ob ject i» to plant and cultivate ; but as.! am quite cer tain thutT have obtained, after tlic labor of three years, the best quality of Tea Nuts, I am disposed to meet the wishes of the public, and to shale them with others.—TeaNuts gathered in the neighborhood of Canton are scarcely worth cultivating, on account of tlie inferior quality of the Ten. It is obviously the interest of the planter to submit to mi increased ex pense, to secure a superior quality of Tea Nut, in es tablishing a Tea Plantation, whether large or small. In prosecuting this arduous undertaking, I am in fact acting ns an agent for the benefit of tlie public, Neither the State, the public, or any individual, has ever extended to me the aid of a single cent. For convenience and security, the Nuts will be packed in tin boxes, and forwarded from Greenville, S. C., by such conveyance and to such address as the purchaser may direct, to any part of the U. States. TEA PLANTS—now on thpir passage from China, selected with a single eye to quality, by a gentleman of large experience in horticultural pursuits, and p r- hapa better acquainted with the character of the Tei Plant, than any person in Europe or America—will also be shared with those desirous of obtaining a small supply. A specification of the soil best adapted to the growth of tile plant, the mode of planting, cultivating, ftc. ftc., will accompany each parcel. Application should be made (post-paid>to the sub scriber. JUNIUS SMITH, Greenville, S. C. P. S. Essays on the Cultivation of the Tea Plant, for sale at the Book Store of J. M. Cooper. %* Savannah Republican, copy three times weekly and send bill to this office. april 18 IRS®- The Michigan Legislature ordered a block of native copper for the Washington Monument—than which no state probably will offer any thing more beautiful. It will be three feet long, by l£ wide and 2 deep, polished, and bearing this inscription : From Michigan, “An emblem of her trust in the Union. Dreadful Death.—A melancholy catas trophe, attended with the loss of life, recently happened at Hazelymph Estate, Jarnica, W. I., the result of which should be a warning to those parties employed in distillation of spirits; the fatal effects arising from carelessness, hav ing occasioned the present disastrous accident. The Union soys. On Wednesday evening last, the residents oil the estate above named were suddenly alarmed by the report of what at first appeared io have originated from the discharge of a very heavy piece of ordinance, the sound of which » was heard at two miles distance; and on their 9 rushing to the place from whence it issued, £ -they were met by a heart-rending scene which baffles all description. A sea of liquid fire met their uffrighted view, emerging from which in a mass of flames, were seen four human beings wrapped in spirits in a state of ignition, and screaming in all the agony which the torments natural to so horrible asituation would produce —on they" ran, until they reached the river, into which they madly plunged, in the hope of extinguishing the flames, and affording them some relief to their pain- The water certainly •did at once quench the fire that was outwardly consuming them, but only to leave them in the consciousness that no hope was left them, and to show to the alarmed spectators the certainty of their fate. While one party of those who hastened to the spot was busily endeavoring to prevent the ignited spirit from consuming the buildings or the property, another was enguged in slleviatingby all possible means the torments of the «uff’ren. Mr. Groves, with prompt humanity imme diately despatched expresses to Dr. John F. Chambers, but that gentleman arrived too late to be of any service. Mr. Clarke, the book keeper, McLennan, the head stiller-man, and one Coolie by name Juggernaut, having expired ere he reached the scene of the accident. The other unfortunate individual, a Coolie, is still lingering, but without the slightest chance of recovery. A Skeleton Revealed in New York. The bones of a human body were found by some workmen on Wednesday in the vault ot the house 636 Fourth st. which they were re pairing. Similar deposits have been revealed a similar way within a few days in I hiladel- phia and Boston. A Mine of Coin.—Some workmen on the bed of the canal near Albany, N. Y., last week struck upon a pile of sovereigns, and n regular grub game ensued. The first finder secured $500,and the others about $150 a piece —in all about $1,200 It is thought to have been accidentally dropped into tho canal L>y some emigrant. JTjp" Late news from the city of Mexico states that there was a great fire and hurricane on the 20th March, and that the loss amount ed to half a million of dollars. 82P Accounts from Cincinnati of tho 23rd inst. state that the boiler of the steamer Bello of the West, which left Cincinnati for St Loui3 with a number of California emigrants, explod ed near Warsaw, about 1 o’clock in the morn" ing, and one hundred lives are reported to have been lost. tW The great annual letting of the Gener al PoBt Office mails, at Washington, is now in progress.—Within 13 working days the Post Master General mustopeh, epdor.se, examine, '“■gister, and decide upon at leant ten th.msand bids. ' > Police.—Benton and Foote —The Nation al Intelligencer understands that the following letter was, on Thursday, communicated to the United States Attorney for the District of Co lumbia: , C. District Attor ney : Sir : A pistol was drawn upon me, yester day, in tne Senate Chamber, and although the Senate has taken notice of that act, and com menced a proceeding upon it, yet thisproceed- in” is no bar to the action of a court of justice and besides, the power of the Senate is limited I think it a prooer subject for a court of jus tice, UDd wish it to he brought before the Crim- inal Court of this District for the examination and decision which the laws Would give it.
